Fledglings “March” 31 steps away from CHAOS and mess towards domestic success...

sanguinechompa · 28/02/2012 22:38

... well, a shiny sink at least!!

Welcome to the March 2012 Fledgling Flyers thread. Park your mops, buckets and microfibre cloths here!!

A huge "thank you" to Linzer for steering us all through February - not a small achievement Linzer considering your school run/teaching commitments and with your dh travelling so frequently.

If you're house is a mess and you are strugging with C.H.A.O.S. (can't have anyone over syndrome) and S.T.U.F.F. (something that undermines family fun) then this is the thread where we (loosely) follow the step-by-step Flylady housekeeping system (in our own, unique, relaxed style) with lots of chat, whinging (in my case anyway Wink) and support along the way.

We advise not signing up to receive the Flylady e-mails as you will be inundated! All the information you need will be linked here on a daily basis.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's tips on restoring order to our homes, and as we are all at different stages we will be using one of the following methods:

Here you can, for one month:

  • repeat or start baby steps
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone
  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

More info here and here!

All long-standing members, intermittent returnees, lurkers and newcomers welcome!!

oh I posted but it's gone.
Buttons, lovely Bitchy

have been given flowers, but also just had family scene due to F1, homework and general family dysfunction.

retreating to watch dysfunctional vampires again I think Hmm
done
lots of homework with ds1, and enjoyed reading bit from Job about Leviathan, never knew that bit! Also decorative fonts. Which caused much anguish and gnashing.

BitchyNoMore · 18/03/2012 16:56

Do you know how long it takes to move a box of files better floors, one sodding file at a time? I have another 2 boxes to go. This is going to be a very very slow emptying of a room.

I have countered this slow progress with an hour's knitting. I am planning another hour and hopefully will have killed off a ufo.

membershipcard · 18/03/2012 18:28

Sad again Sad

BitchyNoMore · 18/03/2012 18:30

valiumpoptarts · 18/03/2012 19:28

Evening all,
I have fallen off the babysteps wagon big time :( I did it way back in oooh...January and everything was great and my place looked lovely, but things have started to slip and now I am just manically running after my tail, getting stressed and fed up and getting a place that looks like a total shithole again. Sigh. So I've been to the flylady site, written the rules down (obviously not signed up for the emails) and am preparing with mild reluctance to throw myself back in. Wish the evening routine involved a Wine rather than water but glad this thread is up here for a bit of support. Thanks in advance to whoever's organised it, I think I have a lot of catch up reading to do too!

BitchyNoMore · 18/03/2012 22:28

I did most of the stuff on my list

make sure ds has clean school uniform that he can find on monday morning done
laundry - Bleach towels? done Followed by maintenance wash? done
Not drink too much coffee. meh
Not kill anyone done

Also done
moved 2 boxes of files between floors one file at a time done
Kill a UFO done
Fold the clean washing mountain

I have discovered drinking bucket loads of coffee can give me the power to just not give a fuck.

swanthingafteranother · 18/03/2012 22:39

done
Homeland (had to hide for most of it)
ds1 bag checked and by front door (well all I can say is there is nothing left on his desk so it must have all the right things in it)
roast dinner
another wash on - crossed fingers all uniform is now washed
violin practice
read poetry with/to Ds1

not a very productive day really, I didn't get anything much done, and no exercise, hopefully tomorrow better Smile

membership Sunday night is usually a low point isn't it

determined to get to bed early and sod the worktops!

ToffeeWhirl · 18/03/2012 22:59

Welcome back, valium. I think we are all a bit like that. The Flylady stuff works brilliantly until there's a crisis or life just gets more hectic than usual and then it all goes pearshaped.

membership - hope you're ok.

Bitchy - that's so sweet of your DS to think of buttons for you. Are you really fighting aliens this evening ("killed off a ufo")?

swan - glad you received flowers Smile. I hope they made up for the family scene.

scatty - I see you were also entertaining MIL today. Hope it went ok.

Nettie - so sorry you had such a difficult day yesterday, topped off with a broken night Sad. Hope thing's improve.

Chitchat and Nettie - arguments between siblings here too this morning, caused by me banning DS1 from his computer, which meant he then annoyed DS2 and made him cry (though I'm sure DS2 played his part in the disagreement too). It is easier to keep them apart sometimes, but then I think they are brothers and should learn to get along - and how will they ever learn if they are apart all the time? (And how will I stay sane whilst they learn? Confused.)

WhoKnows - I hope you had your tea in bed this morning ...

Blue - ... and that you managed your early night last night.

Linzer - so sorry to hear about all your car-related troubles last week. No wonder you needed some Wine. It reminds me of the time my mother backed into a brick pillar at a neighbour's house on Christmas Day and knocked the entire thing down. She was mortified, whereas the neighbours and the rest of the guests just thought it was hilarious.

Well, DS2 was a treasure today and very proud of the card he'd made for me at school, as well as a paper brooch. DS1 didn't do anything for Mother's Day, although he did offer me the end of a chocolate bar he was eating because it was making him feel sick Hmm. I do think DH could have done a better job at nudging him in the direction of a piece of paper and some pens. I cooked a roast and MIL joined us for lunch, then we played 'Blokus' with DS2. After MIL had left, I hoped for a Mother's Day nap, but DH had to go back to bed again. However, I did later nod off on the sofa, whilst DS2 played Moshi Monsters on the computer. At times like that, I am so grateful for the computer media (Lego really didn't offer him the same level of distraction).

Busy day tomorrow, with DS1's English tutor coming round as soon as I'm back from the school run, then the Education Outreach Worker coming round for a meeting about DS1 not going to school . Here we go again.

Off to tackle the kitchen now, which seems to have magically produced more washing up all over again. Minimal Flylady routines happening in this house at the moment, I'm afraid.

BitchyNoMore · 18/03/2012 23:15

it does feel that way toffee. Do you remember those chickens that appeared on my list rather a lot this time last year. They are back on it and need killing off. Hmm Perhaps this year might be the year.... Blush

BitchyNoMore · 18/03/2012 23:36

I got distracted. But i do need a list tomo:

me and ds up
lunch for ds made
ds to school
put load of washing on (half loaded in machine atm)
make sure know where to be for tomo appoint
appointment
ironing
kill off another ufo?

erm early night

BitchyNoMore · 18/03/2012 23:36

Damm it posted too soon. wantedto say;

wishing you all productive home bleurgh days and may it be a good start to the week

cq · 19/03/2012 03:28

Hope you all had a lovely Mother's Day. I don't get one till May here in the USA but managed to remember flowers and phonecalls to the Grandmas back home.

Another productive day with the tickler file - had some jobs DH had to do this weekend, usually forget to ask him till Sunday night. But there was the reminder, in the file, on Sat, so he's done them all. Grin Grin

Think I will shut up about my lovely filing system now as I can see the rest of the house sliding back into CHAOS.

Master Bedroom tomorrow, eh? Lawks.

sanguinechompa · 19/03/2012 05:39

Hello everyone. HOpe you had good w/es and are feeling a bit more rested than before.

Sorry not to post links last night. Had a very full-on day yesterday returning late, and so we came home and went straight to bed.

Hope you are ready for a productive week ahead ...

Baby step number nineteen for tomorrow, Monday 19th March is

here maintaining routines (useful to have a quick look and see where we are at) and read the testimonial about being able to locate a box of cereal and some milk of a morning and not kick the cat making our homes in to private b&bs

Today, we are starting in Zone 4 here the main bedroom.

Here's the detailed cleaning list if you are at that stage detailed cleaning list but note what Flylady says about not worrying if you don't completely finish the main bedroom this week, it will be focusing on it again next month, so anything you get done now will be an improvement.

Today's mission (and all the missions for the week ahead) are included
here under bed fishing.

Today's reminders are here

As you know, the daily focus for Monday is the home bleuuggghhh!!! here

Have a good start to the week everyone!!

Thank you to Toffee for kindly replying to everyone yesterday too Smile

ChitChatFlyingby · 19/03/2012 06:52

Bitchy - Erm, just WHAT have you added to that coffee??!! Grin

Swan- I remember holding DS1 shortly after birth, looking at him, feeling slightly panicked and thinking ?who on earth left ME to be responsible for him????

Scatty - Glad shoe crisis is sorted - if only temporarily

Hi Membership, hope all ok.

Valium - welcome back, babysteps is actually pretty bloody hard, isn?t it?!

Toffee - LOL at ?Aliens?!!! My DSs aren?t even old enough to use our computer, don?t even want to think of the tantrums when THAT time comes Hmm

SC- Hope your full on days were full of NICE things.

Oh sod it, I can?t believe we?re back in the Main bedroom and I STILL haven?t finished painting mine Sad. I MUST finish it this week....!!!!

DH had to leave extra early today and I woke up as he was leaving. HE?S very good at getting his clothes ready and leaving them in the bathroom so as to not disturb me so it wasn?t his fault. Had a restless night sleep, so feeling a bit blah this morning.

This week has the potential to be absolutely awful if I don?t get and stay organised, so many things that need to be done (probably why I was so restless last night).

Yesterday?s tada
4 loads through dishwasher Confused
4 loads through washing machine/dryer, folded and mostly away
Lots of ironing done and mostly away
Lovely service at church
Lovely lunch at local pub
Watch F1 Grand Prix
Make Pumpkin Scones
Make meatballs for DSs? dinner ? with 3 extra portions for the freezer
Throw frozen meal into oven for DH?s and my dinner
Kitchen looking ?almost? tidy, sink shiny.

This morning?s tada
My bed stripped and bedding in washing machine
Dishwasher unloaded
Cup of tea and MN catch up Smile

PositiveAttitude · 19/03/2012 07:07

Good morning everyone.

I hope everyone had a lovely Mothering Sunday.

Right, I am planning on starting this week off as I intend to keep on doing.

TA DA so far! :
Washing machine emptied and loaded
Tumbler emptied and loaded
Washing has been sorted into piles
Washing ready to go on the line as soon as my toes wont get frost bite if I do! Hmm
Ironing

Plan for today:
Hang washing on line
unload dishwasher
breakfast
sandwiches
feed animals
work - long day today
curry for tea
DS to football

I am not going to have a lot of time to do much else today. It does look mighty pathetic, doesn't it? Oh well.! Aim low and achieve is my motto today!

I have just had an email which has made my day already. Yesterday I had a bit of an argument with a "colleague" who told me that I had been doing my job wrong. (The job I have been doing for years and years for loads of different companies and I am highly qualified in) This morning I received an email telling me that he can now see that "WE" have got it right. - so when it was wrong it was me doing it wrong, now it is right it is both of us! Hmm But it was the closest thing to an apology I have ever got from him. The joy!!!

I am off to read back through the thread and catch up with you all. Big waves for now. Smile

LinzerTorte · 19/03/2012 08:38

Morning all,

Hope everyone back in the UK had a lovely Mother's Day yesterday. I tried to persuade DH that we should celebrate twice, once in March and once in May, but he wasn't having any of it. Grin

Just back from a run, which has made my slight headache worse thanks to the wind. Am not even sure I feel any more awake. And now I have a pile of ironing to tackle - telling DH that I'd stopped ironing his shirts was probably a mistake, as he's started inspecting them more closely and has pulled four or five out of the wardrobe that need ironing. Hmm (I know he'll iron them this evening if I don't get round to it, but it gives me an excuse to watch TV programmes that he refuses to watch in the evenings. Grin)

WhoKnows Hope your cold has cleared up by now. Ninety minutes of child-free shopping and a pub meal sound like bliss.

SC I used to think my German (and French) improved after alcohol too, but have come to realise that while I'm definitely more confident about speaking it after one glass of wine, it's downhill all the way if I have any more alcohol. I tend to come out with complete nonsense for some reason - I remember telling a French woman once that I enjoyed playing cards as jouer aux cartes popped into my head. Hmm It was rather awkward when she then asked what card games I enjoyed playing.

Deciding to talk about gait analysis when I haven't a clue what it is in German and wasn't quite sober enough to explain it succintly ("it's when they video your legs") probably wasn't the greatest idea I've ever had. I was just about to start showing off my Norwegian Hmm when DH dragged me away. I wasn't best pleased with him - nor about the fact that he didn't come to my aid when I fell over (he was striding on ahead of me). He said, "How would that have looked, if I'd had to have come back to help you up?" Well, obviously it was far better that I managed to get up, staggered on another metre or so and then fell over again. Blush (I must point out here that I wasn't falling-down drunk and that the slope is tricky to negotiate even when you're sober.) Oh dear, you have to laugh really (although I really, really hope that none of the neighbours noticed).

swan I discovered DD1's dyslexia certificate, which she needed for school enrolment last month, in one of our paper piles a couple of days ago. I do actually have quite a good filing system, but the problems start when I don't file paperwork straight away (which I usually don't).

ChitChat It's very satisfying when the tidying up finally starts to take less time, isn't it? We're gradually reaching that stage, but progress is slow... Unfortunately I have no idea about how to make children share nicely, but let me know if you ever find out. Grin

nettle Sorry to hear about your meltdown on Saturday (I get those too), but Grin at driving back from the playpark wearing only soggy pants.

Bitchy Hope the headache is better today. I find knitting very calming; I spent about an hour knitting outside in the garden yesterday (finally got my square for the MN blanket finished) and found it very therapeutic.

Toffee Sorry you missed out on your lie-in, especially on Mother's Day - but it's lovely that your DS was so proud of the card he made for you. Hope your busy day today goes well and that you have a productive meeting with the outreach worker.

Waves to everyone else and apologies to those I've missed out, but I'll be here all morning otherwise and the ironing is calling...

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 19/03/2012 09:11

Morning all,

An uneventful Mother's Day yesterday, which is fine, I'm not one for a lot of fuss, the DCs brought a card and a bar of soap to me in bed and DH made a cuppa for me. DH and DS considerately got up quietly at 6am to watch the grand prix rather than record it and watch it in the middle of the day, which irritates me intensely, so that got that out of the way. My parents came round for a bit in the afternoon. I had to take it easy to an extent because my back was twinging, but managed to get through a load of washing.

Need to tackle the DCs bedroom today, it is in this weeks zone for me and is in far worse state than our own bedroom. I have just excavated the sheets from the beds to wash, I really don't know how they sleep in them with so many toys and books, it's not just teddies, but lego, musical instruments, you name it.

Linzer - well done for running, I am still full of coughs and cold plus twinging back, so might have to pass again, Pilates class later though.

PA - yay for "nice" email!

Toffree - good luck with the outreach worker. We've got parents evenings tomorrow, need to work out what exactly I am going to say/ask about DS.

swanthingafteranother · 19/03/2012 09:22

Today started with several rows....with non-washing teens and ranting husbands...how many people does it take to unload a dw "in the right way"?

However, we will pass swiftly over that...I am drinking a large mug of coffee, all the children are at school safely washed, uniformed, homeworked, and violined. Dh is going to book tickets to Ireland for me, and my Mum has arranged for all sorts of visitors and carers (she has reverted to complete automomy) and has told me not to come in today (but also to remove all the mobility equipment which is cluttering up her house Grin. Which is all very good news, but I am worried she may be overdoing it. My brother has left today, and I'm going round tomorrow, although she said she only wanted me to visit for night cover...So ironically as I have cancelled most stuff this week on basis that I would be looking after her, I am free most of it!

So, my cleaning lady was meant to be going to her today, but Mum has cancelled that too...so...need to tackle this house with cleaning lady.

Everywhere really. And I need to go to library for brief tidy too.

Toffee outreach officer will probably have some good suggestions as she is probably used to dealing with all sorts of situations. Hope it isn't too frustrating.

JaxTellerIsMyFriend · 19/03/2012 09:36

phew took me ages to find you lot! It keeps dropping off my list... which obviously means I am not doing all I should be.

I am back!

TA DA
up, showered, dressed.
DD at school - albeit with a sprained ankle. Cartwheels have a lot to answer for.
Dogs fed, walked and at home making a dribbling mess on my floors.
Upstairs bathroom cleaned.
Downstairs bathroom swished.
DW unstacked and restacked.
Laundry done, put in tumbly and another lot on top of my bed to be folded and put away.
Ironing ready for my lovely lady to collect.
DH suit ready to be dropped off at drycleaners.

Off for breakfast and then clean kitchen.
Hope everyone is well and happy.

ToffeeWhirl · 19/03/2012 09:42

Thanks for the good wishes re outreach worker, Swan, WhoKnows and Linzer. Am a bit apprehensive now because DS2 has a cold so is also at home. I really, really wanted him to go in because it's the class photo and I was very worried about how it would look to the outreach worker if both my children were off school Blush, but DS2 was in floods of tears and, in the end, I sent him back to bed with a hot-water bottle. He's tucked up, listening to a story tape. Am crossing my fingers that he doesn't suddenly start running around the house, full of energy, at the exact time the outreach worker arrives.

Swan - I hope you're right about the useful suggestions from the outreach worker. Glad for you that you have some unexpected free time this week and that your mum is feeling a bit better.

WhoKnows - parents' evening for me too tonight, but it's for DS2, rather than DS1, so it's very different. I hope yours goes well.

Linzer - Grin at the image of you staggering up the slope. That's rather more public than my sliding down the stairs escapade! Incidentally, my DH wouldn't have helped me up either. I once fell flat on my backside on an icy slope and DH didn't help me up (he thought I was fine Hmm). Fortunately, the rather dashing next-door neighbour came to my aid instead Wink.

Bitchy - chickens and ufos? Your lists just get better and better!

PA - for your triumph over colleague!

SC - thanks for links. Am not sure how many times I have ignored that 'clear out under your bed' mission Blush.

cq - that tickler file sounds very successful. But why does it work better than a calendar or a 'to do' list? I'm intrigued.

chitchat - sorry you had a bad night .

Oops, just noticed the time and I have to get some b/fast into DS1 before his English tutor comes, so must go.

ToffeeWhirl · 19/03/2012 09:43

Hi, Jax! Glad you found us again!
