how much would you pay for an iron then?

i need a new iron - mine is quite a few years old and has had its day....its a Tefal one, its been fine but i cant get the soleplate clean - its quite "sticky" now and doesnt glide like it used to

i am sat reading the Argos catalogue and am none the wiser - i usually buy a mid priced model but it seems that some models are £85 or more! Shock

does anyone have any recommendations? my only must have is a large water tank as i hate having to stop and unplug it every 5 mins to refill - i always iron with steam.

just want a decent mid price model....unless anyone can recommend a really expensive one that does it all for me Grin

thanks!

I can't remember what I paid for mine. I bought it about 4 years ago and it spends a lot of time sitting in the cupboard --gathering dust--.
I don't like ironing.
Sorry, not very helpful.

RatDesPaquerettes · 19/02/2012 21:35

Have you thought about trying to clean the soleplate with something like this? If your iron is still ok apart from the dirty soleplate, it might be worth a try.

oreocrumbs · 19/02/2012 21:36

I just buy cheap irons, around £20. I quite fancy one of those big steam generator ones that are about £200 but I won't get one. I usually go to currys or similar and see whats on special offer and get a £40 iron for £20. I don't have any special requirments really. I have a tefal one at the moment and no problems with that.

I would buy any of these

GetOrfMoiiLand · 19/02/2012 21:37

I just buy an old cheapy for £20 because they never last - dd ends up ironing transfers or something and gets shite all over the plate, or they all get limescaley.

DoingHouseworkHonest · 19/02/2012 21:37

I pay about £20 for irons, I wouldn't pay any more that that. I've also seen those for £80 plus, and could never justify spending that much when a cheaper one does a good job as well!

maddiemostmerry · 19/02/2012 21:44

Have you tried fautless iron cleaner? It is about £8 but really does give the iron a good clean.
I usually buy cheapie irons. We are a big family and I get through an iron a year.I did get to product test the Phillips Man Iron. It has been great and does descale easily.

ThatVikRinA22 · 19/02/2012 21:48

mine is a good 8 years old now and the sole plate has really had it....plus is very scaley and i end up with rust marks on whites and white marks on darks!

Since I iron twice a year, as little as possible.

PigletJohn · 19/02/2012 21:56

I prefer the ones with a stainless soleplate. If anything ever does stick to it, you can scour it as hard as you want with no damage.

The Which Best Buys list has a lot in the £80 to £250 range, but the Philips
GC 2810 at about £25 is also there.

So is the Russell Hobbs 14995 Steam Glide Professional, but not quite as good as the Philips

ThatVikRinA22 · 19/02/2012 22:03

thanks piglet ill check that one out.

I'll never buy another iron again now I have my steam press.

It really is my 3rd baby. Grin

(it's in the argos book too Wink )

anonymosity · 20/02/2012 01:30

not much more than 30 quid.

CeliaFate · 20/02/2012 09:29

If you're like me, get one that switches itself off after 30 minutes of being plugged in but unused. Blush

mumdebump · 20/02/2012 14:39

Did once have an £80 Tefal iron which was fantastic but it didn't survive being dropped on the floor once too often. Since then have had 2 steam irons in the £60-£80 bracket (one Tefal, one Philips) which have both been completely useless and leaked like sieves, so now treat them as a disposable item Sad and refuse to pay stupid prices for them. Have bought a half-price Sainsbury's own brand one for £12.50 and it does the job just as well.

ThatVikRinA22 · 20/02/2012 23:09

cheers all....confirming what i thought which is pay not much.

was looking at the steam generators....then got a dose of common sense when i saw the prices!

ill get an iron in the 25 - 35 bracket i think!

I have a philips steam generator iron which cost about £90 about a year ago and I love it. I was Angry that dh had spent so much on an iron . He got it to save me time apparently as I spent too much time ironing Smile.

ThatVikRinA22 · 23/02/2012 20:39

thanks for the help - dont think i can quite manage to stretch to a generator just yet though!

will go iron buying on my birthday, just for a treat like.

I've finally got an entry level steam generator iron and it's brilliant. I paid about £80.

MinnieBar · 23/02/2012 22:09

Can someone please explain what the giant steamy ones do? And why they cost so much?

DH does all the ironing, but I'm still curious?

hellymelly · 23/02/2012 22:12

I love my steam generator iron, and you would too if you always iron with steam. It was about £165 which seems insane but it does do a better job and is much faster.

pengymum · 23/02/2012 22:33

These Bosch ones are on offer at the moment:
Bosch TDS2551GB instore B&Q if you can find one!

or

TDS3569GB Amazon marketplace
but I would buy from somewhere like Argos or John Lewis, where you can return it if you are not happy with it. They do cost a lot but are worth it IMHO - they cut down the time you spend ironing because the steam penetrates several layers so you only need to iron one side. Best to try one and see for yourself if you think is worth the extra.

BUT you must use descaled water in your iron if you live in hard water area because limescale will damage your iron, even the ones that say use tapwater!

And don't drop your irons - they don't like it!

HTH

MinnieBar · 24/02/2012 07:21

How do you descale water?? Confused

pengymum · 24/02/2012 14:15

can buy soft water, use filters like Brita or get permanent water softener/descaler plumbed in. Makes a big difference to cleaning bathroom too as don't get the limescale so much easier to clean and sparkle!

NoGoodAtHousework · 24/02/2012 14:22

I use ironing water, smells nice and is supposed to cut down limescale. I have noticed a difference since I've used it
