laundry room, utility room and wc in one?

GrooveIsInTheFart · 14/02/2012 14:14

moving shortly and the house has a downstairs wc and seperate utility,

i plan to move them both and reposition the kitchen to a bigger brighter space,

i would love a space for washer/dryer, ironing pile, hanging racks, sink, loo and if possible a downstairs shower,

what do you think and how small/big do you feel it would need to be,

there is a big window already in the area i plan to move the room to.

thanks,

links to pics/ideas?

I ahve a downstairs loo/laundry room/utilty room.

It is very small, probably 6 ft by 5 ft and I cant stand in there to iron. BUT I ahve ,worktop with a big deep sink from IKEA, lots of storage above the tumble dryer (wire racks fro IKEA) a pulley thing on ceiling to dry delicates, storage under sink etc. Keep recycling in there too

No shower though

BloooCowWonders · 14/02/2012 14:21

My only concern would be public / private space. If you have visitors who will use the loo, will you be able yo keep it tidy enough. I loved my utility precisely because no one ever got to see it and I could pretend to be tidy...

class="underline">menu>bathroom>130x115>roomideas Ikea bathroom ideas

Have look through the bathroom ideas on the ikea website, they have some with washing machines and other storage in them in a small space.

My DP had a jumper that was taking ages to dry so I put it on the heated towel rack in the bathroom. He had a hissy fit that his jumper would "smell of poo" because it had dried in the bathroom. I can't say I noticed him smelling particularly poo-ey afterwards, but I can understand why it might bother some people.

I also agree that it's nice to be able to have a messy utility room. I had a little studio flat last year so my bathroom had a washing machine hidden behind slidey doors, the loo next to the machine, the shower next to the loo all along one wall. Along the intersecting wall was a towel rack, a sink/mirror/shelf and a gap to put an airer in. I had a male friend commenting on my "girlie drying rack" (one of <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=coat+hanger+with+pegs&um=1&hl=en&biw=1024&bih=509&tbm=isch&tbnid=L3FBEgAmcNkfnM:&imgrefurl=uk.alibaba.com/product/200718960-12-pegs-flower-shape-plastic-coat.html&docid=e3iVyKbJtu7_lM&itg=1&imgurl=i00.i.aliimg.com/photo/v0/200718960/12_pegs_flower_shape_plastic_coat_hanger.jpg&w=500&h=500&ei=Vnw6T9OhK-iw0QXkx4SWCw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=602&vpy=143&dur=2516&hovh=225&hovw=225&tx=149&ty=100&sig=107898866538622627767&page=1&tbnh=153&tbnw=153&start=0&ndsp=10&ved=1t:429,r:3,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">these but with daisies all over it). I wouldn't have minded much, except it did at the time have all my knickers drying in it Hmm. Luckily we were good friends so it didn't bother me, but when certain people came round I would have to hide all my embarrassing bits of washing...

If that sort of thing doesn't bother you then it sounds like a great idea. Can't help much on size though, sorry.

cyb · 14/02/2012 16:14

Why woudl you want a messy utitly room? there is so much brilliant storage around

I have a wire Antonius unit on my worktop so I can fold straight from the tumble dryer- everyone has their own drawer

hifi · 14/02/2012 16:50

I have a loo, washer, dryer, hand basin in. Space about 5 x 6.have a work surface then two cupboards above that I keep wash baskets of dirty and clean clothes.have a medicine cabinet above the loo for extra storage.

GrooveIsInTheFart · 15/02/2012 08:12

i never thought about tidiness and guests,

i want lots of wall storage and cupboards, i guess i am fairly tidy most of the time, and most of the guests would be family anyway,

i want the family room (next to imaginary utility) to have a pull out sofabed in hence the shower idea if possible,

i think i can spare 5 ft by about 8 ft?

In new house building regs mean you can't have a kitchen door opening into a toilet. I don't know what that would mean for future sales (if you ever wanted to move) but it might be something to consider.

RaspberryLemonPavlova · 15/02/2012 12:39

Didn't they change the those regs though? I thought as long as you had adequate ventilation the two door thing had gone. Or have they brought it back again

leftmymistletoeatthedoor · 15/02/2012 14:57

Oh really? Maybe I'm wrong.

An0therName · 15/02/2012 22:45

pretty sure you can have kitchen door into toilet now

PigletJohn · 15/02/2012 23:04

do you mean you are thinking of moving the WC? this can be quite difficult due to the fixed nature of a soil pipe.

GrooveIsInTheFart · 16/02/2012 11:01

The wc is part of a newer extention so will have already been added to the original plumbing system, I hope this will make it easier to reposition as I plan to bring to closer to the original system so guessing less hassle to move/dig up. Total room space is apporox 20ft 12ft square so I'm sure if wc is one end discreetly and cooker/sink is far end that building regs should be ok?

We have a large combined loo/utility/laundry. The tumble drier is on a shelf above the washer, fitted into the old shower recess (took downstairs shower out as have 2 upstairs) with floor to ceiling white gloss doors hiding them in. To the right and left we have more huge deep shelved cupboards again with floor to ceiling white doors. So when all the doors are closed it looks tidy & streamlined (hiding lots of crap) for visitors using the loo Grin

I would like a ceiling pulley maid in there though, will get round to installing one some day. And I'm not concerned about pooey smelling clothes!

carrotsandcelery · 19/02/2012 16:44

My friend had one like this and I was always envious. It was a big room though but had shower, loo, units, washer, drier and plenty floor space to leave an ironing board up as well.

It had enough storage to be tidy, even though the friend in question was not a naturally tidy person.

OliviaMumsnet · 19/02/2012 16:49

My DSIS put her laundry bits in an upstairs cupbaord to save on schlepping up and down the stairs with washing.
She does have a futility room as well and a sink that can be used for muddy boots etc.

Pannacotta · 20/02/2012 21:19

Olivia does your sister have the washer/drier upstairs? If so does she do washing at night?
Am wondering about putting our washer and drier upstairs but presume it means they is off limits after kids' bedtime.

I think a combined downstairs loo/utility is ok if you are tidy, not so good if you are on the messy side (like me)...

LCarbury · 20/02/2012 21:55

My friend has a lovely combined area that comes off her entrance hall, you go through a door then first there is the loo behind its own door and then there is the utility bit. She is always very tidy so it looks nice but if it were me I would need a curtain I think in front of the utility area!

OliviaMumsnet · 20/02/2012 23:32

Pannacotta
It's in a sort of walk in cupboard, so think that does sound proof it - it has a door. (dunno where it drains actually...never thought about it)
but it is on a lot during the day (big family my sis) so maybe not so much in the eves?
Her DC also q good sleepers Envy

A lot of my friends use downstairs showers after muddy runs/jogs or for their dogs if they have got particulary filthy on their walks. It saves trailing the filth into the family bathroom.

I can see how they would be useful in a utility room for more than washing people. You could shower down a lot of bigger items that you wouldn't take into your bathroom.

That would make sense. Some poor person will end up with their dh's bike in a shower in their utility/wet room now Shock
