help! our house looks like a library, and we are getting slightly overrun with books and yet i keep buying them. we have them in every room, and they sit under the coffee table (fine) and in various baskets around. BUT its inrcreasingly difficult to find what you are looking for, so we need some storage solutions.

i was thinking a bookcase/shelf for DS bedroom to start, something that will be accessible to him and his sister (4 and 1). his bedroom is in the ocean range from M&P but that bookcase is quite tall and narrow and 400 quid. so does anyone have any suggestions? thank you!

We got some great ones from Funky Children's Furniture (sorry can't do link on phone). Very reasonably priced, good quality.

BrandyAlexander · 13/02/2012 18:40

Hi, that's why we didn't get the Ocean bookcase either. Have you looked at tidy books? They are for children so as soon as they can stand they can basically reach for the books. We got one each for the kids and you can have them in neutral, pink and blue. www.tidy-books.com

Meant to add that Amazon also sell them (and sometimes for £10 cheaper). You might also want to look at Aspace. Lovely furniture with awesome service.

We have an expedit bookcase ( ikea) in lo's room for her library. It was bought for toys but the books just overtook, think 800 plus!!!!!
It will hold a lot of books.

I have a few sets of these in white in Dc's play room. They are the perfect size for my 4 and 2 year olds. I did'nt want to spent alot on them as i know it wont be a play room for ever. I think they come in 5 colours. They may not go with M&P solid oak though.

Make sure the shelves are tall enough. I bought a bookcase, only to discover I couldn't fit DD1's big books in it. Also, it doesn't have a back, so the books sometimes fall down the back when DH just chucks them on the shelf

Thankfully I got the bookcase secondhand for £10. If I'd paid full price I'd be very annoyed!

DickSwivellersTidyWife · 14/02/2012 09:05

We have one of the Tidy bookcases and it is lovely for picture books, will need something else when they are on proper books though. It is lovely quality - DH looked at me suspiciously when he was putting it together and said he could tell it was not cheap Blush but I would have another if we had room. They are quite ££ though.

BikeRunSki · 14/02/2012 09:08

We got DS a good one for his room from Jojomamanbebe, £40 in sale. Has wee boxes on wheels for toys to go underneath.

You can fit lots in, some of the shelves take smaller books only, some shelves can fit the bigger/taller books. I would estimate around 15 books per shelf, maybe more?

MrsJohnDeere · 14/02/2012 11:54

We've got about 80 books on our Tidy one. 2 shelves of picture books, one shelf of Ladybird sized books, one of board books (Thomas size)

shelley72 · 14/02/2012 13:35

Thank you. I like the look of the tidy books one, as it looks quite slim and good for displaying picture books -thus saving hours at bedtime rummaging through piles to find something! Is it freestanding, or does it have to be fixed, as we have no wall space available? I am hoping that he will always love books so maybe a more grown up one that can be used for paperbacks in a couple of years might be the way to go....

Freestanding at a slight angle

leeloo1 · 14/02/2012 18:26

I just ordered a tidy books box from them and theres a code on the site for 20% off. I think it was 'winter20', but its on their site anyway. :)

(It made it £55 instead of £69 I think)

craigslittleangel · 15/02/2012 22:26

In a magazine they recomended the wooden Ikea Spice racks, that you can paint and then attach to the wall. Thereby preventing the, "will oversize books fit". Not sure if this will help.

SleepyFergus · 16/02/2012 07:27

Try also vertbaudet - they have quite nice shelves/basket combos which could be used and don't have to stand against a wall.

lisaneedsarest · 16/02/2012 09:52

Be careful with the billy bookcases from ikea, we had one for our kids books, it was full and bowed from the weight so all the shelves fell off! They really are not that strong!

Rindercella · 16/02/2012 15:50

I have just been searching the internet for a children's bookcase too, and have come across this site There seems to be quite a wide range of sizes. Still quite pricey though. I am in my procrastinating mood and can't decide what to do....

Molehillmountain · 16/02/2012 18:48

Expedit from ikea for us too. We have some baskets and some shelves left for books. Good for picture books.

Chickensinthekitchen · 16/02/2012 21:06

I think some of those book cases look lovely but you will end up with a stupid amount of books and 15 per shelf will not cut the mustard.
Good luck.

swanker · 17/02/2012 00:05

We have a combination- a tidy books in the dining room, ordinary Billy type bookcases in the sitting room and upstairs- I much prefer the tidy books while the children are small (DS cannot read yet) - it's just so much easier for them to find what they want. They're narrow- could fit along a decent landing (not that we have one of those!).

It really does hold at least 70!

Pootles2010 · 17/02/2012 10:27

This may not be exactly what you're looking for, but we have spice racks! You get them from ikea for a couple of quid each, they come in untreated pine so just paint them whatever colour you like.

You just screw a few of them to the wall, like this

MrsPlugThePlumber · 17/02/2012 10:39

Pootles - that is genius!!

Pootles2010 · 17/02/2012 10:40

Why thank you Grin wish i could claim credit, actually they're allover pinterest atm. My only concern is toddlers using them as a handy ladder... wheras maybe bookcases made for children may be sturdier?
