too much bed - not enough sleep!

Ok more boring than title may suggest, but I need opinions on this.

I change the bed linen, every week, on the same day, without fail! We're a family of 5 so crazy amount of laundry. I wash the bedding the same day using the express 20 minute wash at 40 degrees (Ye Gods I'm boring myself with this thread now) Iron if necessary.

My ds told me today that a 20 minute wash cycle for bed linen is 'manky' and it needs a longer cycle to get really clean. Really? It's only been on a bed for a week, and I don't have any bed wetters. I would struggle to stay on top of it all if I use an hour cycle. (I do towels on a longer wash)

I don't really think I'm going to change what I do, it suits me and everything seems clean and fresh, but I am keen to hear your opinions.

Clean is clean. What temperature do you wash at?

kahlua4me · 09/02/2012 11:37

I change ours every 2 weeks, doing ours one week and dc the next. I do towels each week though on hot wash.

I try to put a load on every day, or sheets or clothes, so no need to use the drier.

My answer was far less exciting than you op!

oreocrumbs · 09/02/2012 11:39

You are meant to wash bedding at 60 deg to kill the dustmites. On a full wash I presume. I wash mine at 40 on an average wash cycle (the same cycle I use for evey load). If it comes out clean and fresh then that does for me. Only times I wash it on a 60 are if there has been anything dirty on it (if DD has had a wee when I'm changing her neappy type thing).

I wouldn't change the way you do it.

Disclaimer - I may also be 'manky' so you might want to discount what I said Grin

PigletJohn · 09/02/2012 11:39

tell him it gets a 90 minute intensive wash.

perhaps he is reaching an age when he is more sweaty and smelly. A shower before bedtime will help.

Offer to let him do his own washing and ironing

oreocrumbs · 09/02/2012 11:41

nappy not neappy! DD does not hane a neappy that I know of

Iggly · 09/02/2012 11:41

60 for towels and bedding. Why would an extra 40 mins once a week make that much difference? Is the machine on constantly?!

FebreezeYourJeans · 09/02/2012 11:43

Sorry PigletJohn the ds is my sister. She doesn't even live with us, which is why ultimately I feel no great need to change what I do. Should just embrace my inner mankiness I suppose.

FebreezeYourJeans · 09/02/2012 11:45

Iggly I work, so the concept of an extra 40 minutes is a scary one! Also, it isn't just an extra 40 minutes, it's much more. I can't get bedding for 5 into 1 load. It's extra hours

OP posts:
PigletJohn · 09/02/2012 11:46

OK, so tell her it gets a 90 minute intensive wash. How will she know?

valiumredhead · 09/02/2012 12:06

Bed clothes need to be done at 60 - even I do that and I am not known for my cleaning skills Grin

FebreezeYourJeans · 09/02/2012 13:57

but why 60? It seems such a waste of resources to do that weekly. Wouldn't the heat of the iron finish off anything lurking in the sheets?

Anyway, as I said, I'm very interested in every one comments, will accept my manky mantle Grin and carry on as before. It suits me, and nobody's died yet.

Might even admit to my sis that she's right (sigh)

I wash the bedding every other week. one week my and dh's bedding the other week the dc's. lots of airing in between.

it should be washed at 60 to kill dustmites, but if you use the dryer that would be hot enough to kill nearly anything.

happybubblebrain · 09/02/2012 14:02

Why do bed clothes need to be washed at 60? Anything that is living on the sheets will be living in the mattress too, and that never ever gets washed, not in my house anyway.

FebreezeYourJeans · 09/02/2012 14:04

Good point bubble brain I do use a dryer in winter. I have no pets and no children with any allergies. Maybe the fact that they are sleeping in filthy sheets means that they have a high immune system Grin

I would have to move to every other week if I was washing each load for an hour or more. OK for Winter I suppose, but wouldn't like it in Summer.

QED · 09/02/2012 14:09

My sheets get washed at 40 degrees. Have never been washed at 60 degrees.

sandyballs · 09/02/2012 14:12

I was impressed that your ds would even comment on laundry cycles/temps, now i know it's your sister Grin

LikeAnAdventCandleButNotQuite · 09/02/2012 14:20

Hmm my linen gets chucked in on whatever temperature the machine is set at. Usually on a quick wash.

If your DH is so much an expert on laundry, happily delegate him responsibility for it.

Either that, or change you linen once a fortnight and do it on a long hot wash.

Iggly · 09/02/2012 14:28

But you iron your sheets - that'll kill the mites.

I have allergy covers on my mattress so do not iron but do wash at 60.

Iggly · 09/02/2012 14:30

Just read your 40 mins comment - I get you!

You could get spare bedding? So every bed in our house has two
sets so a bit more flexibility. (not sure it works thinking about it now!)

LikeAnAdventCandleButNotQuite · 09/02/2012 14:32

Hmm you wont put sheets on at a longer wash but you are happy to stand and iron them? Maybe put them on a longer wash and stop ironing them

valiumredhead · 09/02/2012 14:32

It kills dust mites apparently, not sure ironing or drying works - or at least that's what the consultant at the allergy clinic told me.

PigletJohn · 09/02/2012 16:27

I thought tumble drying killed mites and eggs? It does moth eggs.

FebreezeYourJeans · 10/02/2012 06:20

I like ironing Blush

I guess it depends on their ages but IMO there's no way a pajama-clad child needs their bedding washed as frequently as adults do. Mine are done fortnightly.
