Cafetiere - i always crack/ break them!

I like a nice coffee each morning but am the only one so a full coffee machine wouldn't be worth it, so I have always had a cafetierre... The only problem is that they always get broken while being washed up, either by me, dh or the kids!!

I have broken my xmas one today Sad

can anyone recommend one that doesn't break easily? Are the stainless steel ones any good or do they make the coffee taste odd?

Hi
Suggest you use the bodum ones
Glass quality good
Keep them out of dishwasher .or sspouts break .
Then the glass hugs are widely available if they do break ......not too expensive .
Or are you already aware of all of this ?

spiderbabymum · 15/01/2012 09:10

Jugs

newyearnewattitude · 15/01/2012 09:26

Hi,

We dont have a dishwasher so breakages are usually human error, this morning the glass spin around and the spout cracked on the plastic bit holding it....

I have had a bodum before... Might see if i can find an affordable one on ebay!

get a metal one, we have a stainless steel one, Look on Ebay.

kalidasa · 15/01/2012 09:39

Or get one of those stove top coffee pots? They are cheap, make very nice coffee and are in my experience essentially indestructible.

MoreBeta · 15/01/2012 09:45

kalidasa - yes I agree about stove top coffeE pots. We have a several different sized Bialetti ones.

Better coffee thabn a cafetiere as well in my view. Poured into a half cup of hot milk. I think its a nicer cup of coffee than a latte in most coffee shops.

Asinine · 15/01/2012 09:49

Bialetti are ace. You can buy any size, the coffee tastes gorgeous, they are a style icon, they are unbreakable and they're fairly cheap. I use mine at least three times a day, although I drink decaff I am hooked.

Asinine · 15/01/2012 09:51

MoreBeta is right, I thought they were just for espresso, but you can make latte or 'normal' coffee too. The sizes are for expresso cups though, so a six cup is really a normal two cup iyswim.

brandysoakedbitch · 15/01/2012 09:57

I have the same problem with bodum glass things. I had the same one for 8 years and then broke three (me and dh twice!) in about 6 months - I cannot bring myself to replace it again so I think I might get a stovetop pot instead as I really do miss my coffee.

TimorousBeastie · 15/01/2012 10:07

Make the move to stainless - I've had my small stainless one for years now. Got a big one too but it has thinner metal on the spout which has got a bit damaged in the washing up, so it dribbles a bit, but other than that it's still going strong.

reckoner · 15/01/2012 10:07

OOh this is naice

lottiegb · 15/01/2012 10:15

my sister managed to explode one of those stove top ones at high pressure all over the kitchen - quite an achievement though! I have one of those too. The metal cafetiere is great for taking away with us and just generally really good.

cocobongo · 15/01/2012 10:25

i managed to break my new bodum one BEFORE I'D EVEN USED IT!!! I was giving it a wash before first use, and the spout clipped the base of the sink and broke off. grrr. they def need to strengthen the glass at the spout, that is almost always what breaks for me.

HandMini · 15/01/2012 10:47

Yes yes yes to the Bialetti type. Watch out for the rubber ring between top and bottom half wearing out (every year or so if it gets heavy use like ours does) but it's easily and cheaply replaced. Makes excellent coffee as described above.

MsWeatherwax · 15/01/2012 12:48

If it's just you then I recommend this: www.whittard.co.uk/china/fine_bone_china/vintage_rose_chatsford_filter_mug.htm You put coffee in the filter and add water and then just lift out the filter bit. The great part is the filter bit cannot break and you can use any cup with it if the cup it comes with breaks or is dirty. Also easy transportable, good for work etc.

Sorry, here is the working link version.

poshme · 15/01/2012 13:19

Or one of these- www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0001M0BC4 I have one and use it all the time. But put the coffe in the top if you want it strongish.
Works really well when you only want 1 cup.
Parents have stainless steel cafetieres and doesnt taste dufferebr IMO.

poshme · 15/01/2012 13:19

Sorry can't do links on my phone!

newyearnewattitude · 15/01/2012 17:42

All good suggestions, i'm not too keen on stove top ones to be honest... The stainless ones look lovely!

The filter mug one is interesting....

Poshme - the end of the url is missing so i can't look at that...

Probably raising false hope here, if the idea appeals, as I haven't been able to find these for a few years now but - I used to have the most excellent 'cafetiere in a thermal cup', all plastic, the plunger runs down the inside, so you just chuck in coffee, fill, plunge and drink. I used it at work for years, til the end broke off the plunger, then couldn't find them anymore, Very sad.

newyearnewattitude · 15/01/2012 19:56

Lottie, is it like this on ebay? "NEW Smart Cafe Hot Cafetiere Coffee Mug Cup Red" bit.ly/xCRua6

Was it anygood?

OP posts:
lottiegb · 15/01/2012 22:48

Yes exactly! (wasn't red before but otherwise). That's wonderful, I liked it so much. It was just a great thing for work, as it kept the coffee warm, only one thing to wash up, stayed on my desk and unbreakable.

Lakeland used to sell them and I gave them to many people as gifts, had looked on Ebay a while ago. I am pleased Smile

RandomMess · 15/01/2012 22:50

I solved this problem, bought several spares when on sale, at car boots etc etc.

haven't dropped/cracked/chipped one since Grin

I use the small ones - even have a stainless steel one awaiting in the cupboard. Someone at work as a a cafiterre and mug in one thing - Lakeland perhaps? I also have a bodum one cup plastic thing that sits on top of the mug which I leave at work?????
