I like a nice coffee each morning but am the only one so a full coffee machine wouldn't be worth it, so I have always had a cafetierre... The only problem is that they always get broken while being washed up, either by me, dh or the kids!!

I have broken my xmas one today Sad

can anyone recommend one that doesn't break easily? Are the stainless steel ones any good or do they make the coffee taste odd?

You can get replacement glass for the genuine Bodum (other brands may not be exactly the same size and sometimes break when you push down the plunger) but you will find you can get an own-brand cafetiere at the supermart for less money. The plastic framed ones are cheaper than the metal frames but possibly less beautiful.

Morebeta yes, I do just the same with half a cup of warm milk. Delicious. Even better if you have one of those milk-frother wand things.

You do have to check the rubber rings from time to time, it's true, though usually they come with a spare one anyway.

One of my stove top pots exploded once - it was the morning after the first night that dh spent at my flat. He was absolutely covered in it and I was still finding coffee grains in random places months later. It's the only time it's happened though in years of use and the pot wasn't broken at all and still works fine (hence indestructible). Perhaps I overfilled it? Think the pot was reacting to the excitement of the situation!

you should never put boiling water in any coffee pot....let water rest for a at least a minute....boiling water weakens stuff...and makes coffee taste like sh**e as you have effectively burn it.......do that and you may find you don't break so much

Agree with Indaba about water temperature, but have lost many glass parts through stirring with the metal spoon I use for measuring coffee - now I use a plastic spoon and have fewer breakages.
Thanks for info on cafetiere-coffee-cup -mug on ebay.

DH smashed ours, DD sneaked up on him washing up. He jumped and bashed it into the tap.
Only on we've broken in almost 20 years.
Mind you, it only gets washed up properly properly once inna blue moon.
Quick swish in hot water and filled again.

Oh I've always liked the look of those Bialetti ones but they look very complicated. How do you make the coffee?

kalidasa · 24/01/2012 09:05

It's very easy - you unscrew the pot, put water in the bottom (up to the level of the screw in the side), fill the middle tray with coffee then screw the top firmly on and put it on the hob. Once it heats up the coffee comes up into the top part. As soon as you hear a slight 'bubbling' noise (which means it's nearly finished) you turn it off and pour it out. Speed depends on the size of the pot/level of heat/your hob but in our flat the small one only takes about 3-4 minutes I'd say. Perfect for me as I like to heat up some milk while it's doing. You can get bigger pots as well - we have small, medium and large.

It's fast, cheap and makes very good coffee. It also makes the kitchen smell very nice.
