Welcome to the January Fledgling Flyers' thread. A very big thank you to BlueEyeshadow and IceColdBitch for guiding us through the busy Christmas month.

Are you living in CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome)? We know the feeling. We follow Flylady's routines, which aim to help you take control of your home, tidying and decluttering and setting up daily and weekly routines that keep your home looking presentable. We also chat quite a lot and swap tips on coping with housework and mess.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's tips on restoring order to our homes. There are three methods, depending on whether you are new to the system or have been following it for a while:

  1. Babysteps
  2. Babysteps + 15 mins daily decluttering in current zone
  3. Babysteps + daily missions

Following the babysteps helps to establish daily routines and build a weekly plan.

If you are overwhelmed by the mess in your home, start with just one thing: shine your sink.

Oh, and don't - really, really ^don't^ - sign up to Flylady's emails.

The first babystep will be posted on 1st January 2012.

Happy New Year.

Smile

Must admit that the length of these threads has put me off previously, but this time, I'm determined to get stuck in. I guess that the secret will be to check in every day, little and often, just like the cleaning itself.

I may need a lot of encouragement! Blush

openyerlugholes · 30/12/2011 10:42

I found the daily threads really helpful. Especially as that day's mission and zone would be posted. And I could easily find my new to do list.

Anyhoo, all the girls are away today (bar dd1 who is lounging on the couch - not for long as am going to hoover behind it shortly). So have the whole day to myself to get stuff done!

My list for today:

Up and shower - done
Dress to shoes - done
Swish and swipe bathroom - done
Reload dw - done
Hoover - partially done
Menu plan
Week's shop
Go to recycling/tip

Major jobs:
Declutter, clean and tidy under stairs - DONE waheeeeyyyy!!
Filing
Tidy linen cupboard
Detail clean lounge (zone will be complete)

Probably won't get everything done but will make a start. Didn't plan to attack the cupboard under the stairs before breakfast, but dh asked me to find something under there which meant I had to drag everything out anyway. So glad it is done!

Lifebeginsatforty · 30/12/2011 10:44

Hi all. Just marking my place. Will start posting here properly in Jan.

thetasigmamum · 30/12/2011 10:48

shanna hello! Thank heavens someone understands what I'm on about. Both my DDs are dyspraxic too, which makes matterso so much worse. For me, it's not just the difficulty in organising that is a thing (though it definitely is for them) it's the complete absence of dexterity or even competence in many of the cleaning and/tidying tasks that is a problem. For example - we have only plastic plates now. Blush But we do still have breakable mugs (some. A dwindling number) and bowls. Doing the DW either has to be very slow, or risky, if I'm doing it. I can't stand on a chair or a step stool to reach up high to either clean or out away, unless there is someone to help me get down again (that is the single most embarrassing thing. It wouldnt be such an issue of I wasn't 5'2" but I am, so.....). I'm quite good at low level (ie near the ground) dusting and cleaning and scrubbing, so long as I take it slow (slow is the answer to practically everything, I've discovered over the years). I'm a menace with a mop and little better with a Hoover although the potential for damage the is limited so we take the risk. There was that one time I tripped over the power cord, hit myself in the face with the wand and broke my glasses but we don't talk about it Grin

ToffeeWhirl · 30/12/2011 10:49

Welcome to all the newbies (52 and counting Shock) and to all the returners and old-timers. I won't be posting babysteps till 1st January, so you can all relax until then. If I can't answer any of your questions, there will always be a more experienced Fledgling who can - quite a few of the thread posters have been Flying much longer than me.

To those of you who posed questions:

Emmac50 ? Flylady?s theory is that other members of the family start to join in with the Flylady methods once they see how effective they are. You can read her views on it here. Great that your DH has started picking his clothes up. I must say, that particular habit still hasn?t rubbed off on my DH Hmm.

Mintchocchic ? sorry, but I do most of the routines myself. I am working on DH and kids though and hope that it will all filter through in the end. DH has been impressed by the effectiveness of Flylady.

openyerlugholes ? yes, we do follow the zone cleaning. We are in a different zone each week and do the missions and decluttering in that zone. And we do lists too. Somebody invented the 'ta da' list, which is inspiring and always helps you to realise what you have achieved in a day, rather than focusing on what you haven't.

BuckminsterFullerene ? you should have a read of ?Feminism and housework and hoarding and Flylady?. Chip, in particular, gives an interesting perspective on Flylady.

leftmymistletoeatthedoor ? yep, decluttering is the key.

SuePurblybilt ? yes, Flylady can help. Losing things is so stressful. Congrats on the linen cupboard.

libbyssister ? the great thing about Flylady is that she gives you routines to follow, so you don?t have to fret about everything there is to do anymore. You know it?ll get seen to eventually. Blitzing when people are coming is called a ?crisis clean? in Flylady language and she even has a system for this!

sharenicely ? I menu plan too and write the week?s menu on my calendar. I use Menus4Mums mostly (you pay a small fee and they post weekly menus) and, sometimes, Resourceful Cook (which is free).

IceColdBitchy ? sorry, had failed to notice that every previous Flying thread by our group has had ?fledgling? in the title Blush.

Jas ? you did that fab Flylady Christmas thread last year, didn?t you? I printed it all out and put it in my control journal. Did you notice that I bumped it this year?

Alouisee ? off topic - you won?t remember me, but you were one of the most vocal Mumsnetters taking my side (thank you!) when I first posted a question on MN. I was new to MN and was shocked at how judgemental some people were. The Flying thread is much gentler!

peachybums ? sorry you are not well. It must be hard to keep on top of housework when you?re unwell.

ButterPopcorn ? I agree with the other Fledglings who recommend e-cloths. In fact, the best pack I got had an e-cloth and a buffing cloth too, so if I really want to impress people, I use both! Even my MIL asked me how I managed to get my taps so shiny recently.

Ponders ? my sink doesn?t shine either (black granite). But I do have shiny taps (see above) Wink.

cartblanche ? I don?t always get dressed first (still in PJs at the moment, for instance, but I was up till 2am this morning dealing with my oldest son and his sleeping over friends), but I do find that I feel more organised when I do, so it is a rule that I try to follow

superdragonmama ? clutter gets you down, no doubt about it. Get yourself a timer and start decluttering for 15 mins a day!

DharmaBumpkin ? don?t worry, a tidier house is not a torturous process if you use Flylady.

daisylulu- Flylady has some tips on Flying with babies.

BerylStreep - Flylady also does a section on 'body decluttering', which we could probably all do with at this time of year. Unfortunately, she has had a revamp of her website and, at the moment, the search engine isn't working so I can't find it. She has published a book on it, which you can get secondhand from Amazon here. (I should be on commmission, shouldn't I? Wink).

thetasigmamum ? do you think you could get your DH involved with Flylady? It sounds as if he?d need to be to make it work for you.

Flylady has a list of FAQs here, which might help if any of you still have unanswered questions. NB: there is a lot we ignore on the Flylady website (mentions of - ick - purple puddles, for instance). But the underlying system is sound.

Hope this helps.

toffee DH is the one who will be mainly doing it. He is the at home person. Even though if I'm not away, I'm working from home. But he is supposed to be the house person. He is cool (ish) with the idea of getting a proper routine and reducing it all to a series of winnable tasks. He's also cool with the idea of my input being scheduled too, he thinks this will demonstrate Zi don't help enough I know this will demonstrate I do a ridiculous amount although he is right to point out I don't do anything in the garden. However neither does he so it's a moo point (as Joey woukd say). For example, when it's a bathroom/toilet week it will be the first time in his life he has cleaned either. Grin Sometimes this is a flash point because the mess really upsets me and it doesn't bother him at all and his attitude has been that if it bothers me (the mess he has made on the hob, for example, letting pans boil over and whatnot) then I can clean it but he is ahoy to live with it. So it's sometimes a bit like a war of attrition - but he has agreed that actually it's a bit poor really and some structure will help. So hopefully this will be the answer. Like me he now realises that living in CHAOS isn't great.

thetasigmamum · 30/12/2011 11:02

D'oh! HAPPY to live with it. Although being 'ahoy' kind of works as it implies a jaunty sort of devil may care outlook.

TeaOneSugar · 30/12/2011 11:18

I love flylady - I even bought the book - which I would recommend - but I do it in my own way, I follow the principles but not the exact practice.

Some of it has become habit now, like giving the bathroom a once over morning and evening, tackling hot spots daily and decluttering - my tolerance to clutter has markedly reduced, but I think I need to get back into the habit of zone work which has slipped and some of the areas I focused on last year like the spare room and the pantry need more work (both got filled with christmas stuff).

I know I won't be able to keep up with this thread, I've tried in the past and I just can't do it as i work 30 hours over 5 days and I'm studying and I'm committed to another forum for weight loss support - but if it's OK I'll be an occassional visitor and post a weekly to-do list.

PositiveAttitude · 30/12/2011 11:21

thetasigmamum Very interested to read your dyspraxic cleaning bits. DD3 is dyspraxic. She finds sorting out chaos very difficult, although when she gets down to it she becomes almost obsessive the other way and wants everything to have its own place and does very well. DD1's dyspraxic tendencies, unfortunately are just at the total chaos level and we certainly need to practice the devil may care theory. They both will put something down and instantly forget where it is, or not realise they have put it down. Trying to get them both to remove anything is impossible. I have to say, "do it now!" or it will be there and forgotten about within seconds and will remain for as long as it takes for me to do it! Hmm

MudAndGlitter · 30/12/2011 11:22

I'm in. I can't live like this anymore!

scattyspice · 30/12/2011 11:45

Wow! Flying is obviously hot for 2012!

I'm climbing back on the wagon again this Jan. lets see if I can last a year this time Smile.

Thanks toffee Smile.
Hi to all the newbies and old timers (I recognise quite a few names Smile).

ClaraDeLaNoche · 30/12/2011 11:52

I am in. If the only thing I achieve is clearing out the back room full of boxes from our house move in June 2008, then I will have achieved a lot.

DharmaBumpkin · 30/12/2011 13:24

Thanks for the welcome, and I'm derringer to stick with it this time... Signed up for the emails last year and was quickly overwhelmed! However suspect if I don't lose the mess I might lose my marriage Shock so need to start slow and build up rather than clean for hours a day for one week then get fed up Blush

IceColdBitchy · 30/12/2011 13:38

That is what flylady is about 15mins at a time and No perfectionism. Took time to get into a state will take time to sort out!

toffee was teasing ma dear.

Right you horrible lot as you seem to be intent on filling this thread before 2012 even begins I shall just add this little note as far as the fat fairy is concerned tonight is date night so do something FUN with oh if have one.

Saturday is what the fat one has designated as family fun day so spend some time doing something fun with the dc.

And as for sunday that is renew your spirit day although seeing as it is also the first of January i suspect that it will be recover from the late night and Wine day for a number of you!

Right I refuse to post my december to do stuff in Janaury
As for the newbies and those who haven't encountered me under one of my nn I have an interesting take on posting and if you are easily offended it might be best to skip my posts as I swear far too fucking much and have a tendancy to be blunt. You have been warned.

peachybums · 30/12/2011 14:10

Just catching up and thought id post about an app i found which looks pretty good, it also has a free version which seems to work just aswell :) Its called motivated mums. You can add your own tasks so its not a 'pre' done list so its more suited to your needs.

Good luck to everyone, i hope i can keep up with the thread it seems to be busy already and theres still a few days to go until 2012 :)

openyerlugholes · 30/12/2011 14:20

Back from the horror that was tescos. Absolutely manic - far worse than pre-xmas shopping! Suppose it is everyone getting stuff in for their ny parties now

Just to detail clean the lounge and think that's me for the day. Don't think I can face starting the filing. Will leave it for next week.

Dh taking me out for dinner tonight yay!

Up and shower - done
Dress to shoes - done
Swish and swipe bathroom - done
Reload dw - done
Hoover - partially done
Menu plan - done
Week's shop - done
Go to recycling/tip - done

Major jobs:
Declutter, clean and tidy under stairs - DONE waheeeeyyyy!!

laurenamium · 30/12/2011 14:59

Shock at new people, there's lots!! at you all Grin

I'll be list dumping mostly until things settle down! Too quick for me 144 posts Shock

Jas · 30/12/2011 15:09

Its starting to look like an old FLY reunion on here. @shanna, OFM and others I recognise.

Toffee - no I didn't see you bumped the old christmas threads. I've hardly been on mn at all except the book circles for over a year. Thanks though.

IceCold - do I know you?? I quite like blunt, bossy and sweary, but then I have been known to be blunt and bossy myself....

Not posting to do lists yet. I am crisis cleaning until the kids go back to school on Tuesday. Then I will try and do baby steps again to rebuild routines.

openyerlugholes · 30/12/2011 15:59

That's me done! Detail cleaned the lounge and it is all sparkly and lovely. To say that hoovering and washing the floor behind the couch needed to be done is a MAJOR understatement Blush

Knackered now. No more housework until monday yay!

IHeartKingThistle · 30/12/2011 16:14

cHAOS sums it up perfectly. An awkward encounter with a lovely neighbour on my doorstep the other day made me realise I need to improve. She obviously expected to be invited in but the house was a state. Count me in!

thetasigmamum · 30/12/2011 16:25

Ok, so, I don't know what morning and evening routines are, but this is what we have achieved today:

  1. Up DONE
  2. Dressed to shoes DONE
  3. DH shined the sink and cleaned the hob (this was major task) DONE
  4. DW nearly full after breakfast and lunch will prob go on after dinner DONE
  5. Bathroom swished and swooshed (by me). (don't really know what that means but I picked up all the crap and cleaned the basin and put the toothbrushes away etc) DONE
  6. Living Room sort of declutered but not completely (I got the kids to take their stuff up to their rooms and to put the DVDs away (they had been searching for The Two Towers which was NOT in its box :( ) DONE

In other stuff we also

  1. Dropped DD2 at theatre for her Panto matinee, DH and DD1 are collecting her now
  2. Rest of us have been at gym while DD2 was doing her panto - I ran 3 miles, DD1 DS and DH swam

But now we are essentially begging out in front of the telly re-watching Bleak old shop of stuff until the others come back from the theatre at which point we shall put on the recovered Two Towers. And I'm cool with that. Later on DH and I will do the DW and load the washing machine.

IceColdBitchy · 30/12/2011 16:40

I don't recognise your name Jas. Did venture onto the old fly thread a couple times got scared, ran away and found the fledglings You might have encountered me about I used to be very prolific under many past names but became jaded when tdwp gate hit and the mamazon debarcle and the ss troll so mainly stick to a few safe threads these days.

NEWBIES don't worry if you don't understand what morning and evening routines are this will build up during this first month and if you can manage to stick through the first month it does become clearer. Also Stop fricking racing ahead it is against the fat fairy way. one babystep, one day and if you absolutely must do other stuff 15mins decluttering you can not clean clutter so use other energy to deal with it!
all these fucking scarey motivated people cluttering up the thread HmmWinkGrin.

Oh and for the regulars btw what theme we going for this month? It will be my primary haunt so happy to redecorate it to suit. Cool and sultry or pink and girly

BroomForMyChin · 30/12/2011 16:46

I am supposed to have been doing stuff today?
