Welcome to the January Fledgling Flyers' thread. A very big thank you to BlueEyeshadow and IceColdBitch for guiding us through the busy Christmas month.

Are you living in CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome)? We know the feeling. We follow Flylady's routines, which aim to help you take control of your home, tidying and decluttering and setting up daily and weekly routines that keep your home looking presentable. We also chat quite a lot and swap tips on coping with housework and mess.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's tips on restoring order to our homes. There are three methods, depending on whether you are new to the system or have been following it for a while:

  1. Babysteps
  2. Babysteps + 15 mins daily decluttering in current zone
  3. Babysteps + daily missions

Following the babysteps helps to establish daily routines and build a weekly plan.

If you are overwhelmed by the mess in your home, start with just one thing: shine your sink.

Oh, and don't - really, really ^don't^ - sign up to Flylady's emails.

The first babystep will be posted on 1st January 2012.

Happy New Year.

Smile

Good morning Smile

Making the bed isone of the babysteps that stuck for me the first time round. It makes the whole bedroom look better instantly.

I have decided I need my routines printed out and stuck up on the kitchen wall. I have no fancy phone for apps (but am now seriously wondering if I can justify ever getting one....Blush) and have the written down in my version of a control journal, but they need to be visible for me, and for the rest of the family.

DD2 was on a sleepover last night so the house is very quiet this morning. Cup of tea for me before I get dressed I think...

ToffeeWhirl · 15/01/2012 09:47

Good morning Jas - and anyone else who's around. I am 'renewing my spirit' this morning by sitting here in my dressing gown with a cup of tea whilst DC watch telly Smile. About to do the menu plan and shopping list for next week so DH can do the week's shopping later this morning. Got to do morning routines, then sit down with DS1 and tackle revision for solutions and particles for a Science test. My head hurts just reading about it, but he has a test on Tuesday and he won't revise unless I push him.

Jas - enjoy your quiet morning Smile.

slowburner - three hours' work Shock - and then more! It must be good to wake up this morning knowing that all that work has been done. I hope you manage to get a bit of relaxation time today.

Bubbles - congratulations on the shiny sink. I didn't do mine last night (put going to bed at a decent time first), but was delighted to find DH doing it first thing this morning. He never finishes it (always leaves a few spoons and cups 'soaking' Confused), but the worst is done.

Darts - well done on the decluttering. That really is the key to an easier life. The Roman villa sounds amazing! It's very sweet that they tidied up after themselves too. Glad to hear your routines are working too.

loosinas - don't think about all the stuff you need to declutter or you'll feel overwhelmed. Just focus on one small area at a time. Linzer recommended a good book on decluttering to me a while back, which I'll look out for you (if you see this first and know what on earth I'm on about, Linzer, maybe you could let loosinas know).

Changebags - we have cables spilling out on DH's side of the bed. It's an ongoing problem. They spill out all over the floor Sad and I have to shove them back under the bed. He has tagged them all at last, so at least I know what appliances they all match up with. Drives me mad. I think you can buy cable tidies from Lakeland and suchlike. I see you are rebelling - in a big way - against the 'get dressed to shoes' rule!

dizzy - hope you have a good day out and enjoy coming back to your tidy house.

openyerlugholes - it's good to know that decluttering really does make cleaning and household routines so much easier. Hope you enjoyed your Saturday 'date night' with DH.

Perish - 15 minutes at a time really does help, doesn't it? I used to feel so overwhelmed by all the jobs that need doing, whereas now I don't feel stressed, just set my timer and work for 15 minutes, then stop. And so much more gets done.

Membership - congratulations on doing the missions. It is usually quieter here at the weekend. I'm sure everyone will be back on Monday.

JustGettingOnWithIt - oooh, another Flylady home educating! Do you get your DC to help with the Flying? I used to call my son 'Flyboy' when he was being home educated, as I used to give him jobs to do around the house. Admittedly, his initial enthusiasm faded after a while Wink. I'd love to hear how you started home educating if you feel like PMing me. Home education is always a possibility with DS1.

libby - your calendar is very similar to my Organised Mum one, which also has stickers (although I think DS2 has stolen most of them now). I couldn't do without it.

Dalrymps - hope you are getting more help around the house now DH is off work.

Bitchy - hope you're feeling better today.

Going to do my menu planning now and then watch the end of 'The Good Mother' on 4OD. Anyone else see that? The extremes of motherhood... (placenta smoothie, anyone?)

I've just dropped in to say that my Magic Eraser sponge arrived from Lakeland, and that it's amazing. I've used it to clean lots of marks off the living room wall (including bad scrapes from a Poang chair, and what looked like a big blue mark from denim Confused). I can't wait to inspect the rest of the walls now Grin.

Happy Flying everyone.

ToffeeWhirl · 15/01/2012 10:02

Yes, we love ours too! Happy erasing!

OP posts:
PerishStorm · 15/01/2012 10:35

recursive those magic erasers are seriously addictive haha!

valiumpoptarts · 15/01/2012 11:09

morning all,
been lurking without time for posting the last few days what with work, the shower breaking and keeping on top of flying. However all is going well, feel much more in control of things and my new e-cloths are magnificent! Highly recommend them to anyone who's not got them :) right, off to do my ironing. Can't believe I just wrote that!!!

LinzerTorte · 15/01/2012 12:06

Just flying by to say that the book I recommended to Toffee was No More Clutter - it really inspired me when I read it a few years ago. I could probably do with rereading it, in fact. (Hi loosinas - I remember you from one of the fledgling flyers threads a while ago Smile).

Dalrymps · 15/01/2012 12:33

Ooh I want an magic eraser!

Had a sleep in 2 days in a row thanks to dh so feeling a little more energetic nowSmile

IceColdBitchy · 15/01/2012 13:26

Hey loosina. It does get better, but remember a little and often decluttering doesn't look a lot until you suddenly realise that you have got rid of three boxes of stuff here, you can shut a cupboard there.

Yep toffee feeling much better. Far far too much fun this weeked so resting today ready for another week of madness. Someone said to me yesterday that they would hate the schedule i run to as it is too busy. Weird that as it doesn't seem busy to me. Seems normal activities wise. Especially as things get much busier when i am in full training mode. Ah well different people different lives and all that.

openyerlugholes · 15/01/2012 14:53

Afternoon!

loosina agree with the others - a little bit of decluttering at a time soon turns into a lot of decluttering. Don't do too much at one time. It will only overwhem you and discouraging from tackling any more.

Lazy day for me today. House is fine, sink shined, bathroom swished, hoovering done, dinner made (shepherd's pie), washing and ironing up to date. So taking it easy.

Off to music club tonight. Dd3 is going to the children's session with her guitar and violin and I will be at the adult session with my violin. Have a ceilidh coming up in a few weeks and haven't practiced for ages so need to go tonight.

Sherlock holmes 2 was brilliant last night! Would recommend it.

WannabeMegMarch · 15/01/2012 17:26

Marking my place to stay up to date.
I am concentrating on a few habits and really noticed the difference. My sink is shone and clear each night; and swishing each loo daily.
As I have had a busy week with extra appointments last week, I didn't get much more done. But will be happy if I keep up this much.

DartsAgain · 15/01/2012 18:23

Hi Toffee and everyone.

Well, the girls have finished the villa, without a roof, so they can show the inside... I must admit it looks great (but not like a roman villa Grin) I'll take a photo soon and post it.

They cleaned up again today, and at one point they decided to make a pipeable icing to use as "cement", so they looked it up on Youtube, wrote down the recipe, and made some, including using the electric handwhisk to make it (yum). DD has shown a dab hand in piping icing accurately and steadily. They made too much though, so not sure if I can freeze it (although DP is likely to nab some as he goes by Grin)

So, no real flying done today, just supervising the girls.

scattyspice · 15/01/2012 18:37

Hi all Smile. Have been MIA recently, weekends seem to be busier than weekdays ATM Hmm.

Tomorrow:
home bleugh
investigate after school club
request day off at work
tel Mum

BB tomorrow (with renewed enthusiasm).

Lalou · 15/01/2012 19:07

Hi everyone. A good week here overall; hard to see myself ever moving on from babysteps but routines are being stuck to except Friday night when I CBA.

Had a couple of 'rabbit in the headlights' moments this week when I felt overwhelmed but made myself do a 15 minute declutter each time and it really helped.

And I wrote a menu plan! I am a changed woman Wink
Good luck for next week everyone.

Bubbles2012 · 15/01/2012 20:14

Evening. Relatively quiet day but my home routines app is telling me 16 accomplishments which feels quite good! Also did my first proper 15 min declutter - my wardrobe. Was amazed at what a difference 15 mins made and while there is more to do I'm encouraged that tackling things in 2, 5 or 15 mins can make me feel far more in control. Everything will get done, in good time!
:)

FleeBee · 15/01/2012 20:22

Hi everyone
Recursive or anyone else... Will the magic erasers get wax crayon from a painted wall? My 2 yo DD has created some artwork on the playroom wall. Thought it was quiet whilst I was making dinner. Grrrrr...

Also does anyone have advice on how to best clean a glass shower cubicle??

Haagendazs · 15/01/2012 21:05

Hello all

I've been MIA too - been working full on so notmuch in the way of flying. However I've kept the sink shining and bathrooms pretty much swished and swiped and hotspots put out. Washing is up to date but not the ironing.
I'm happy to see the new babysteps (making bed as soon as you get up) is one I already do.
Not working tomorrow so will get some decluttering done.

slowburner · 15/01/2012 22:49

Horrendous night last night with DD, think she was cold. Reckon between 1am and 7am I got about two hours broken sleep. So unceremoniously dumped her on DH at half seven and went back to bed until nine.

Today:
Got dressed, made beds, had breakfast
Errands in town, family lunch.
Cleared stairs and kitchen worktop hotspots
Did 15min attacking all upstairs rooms
Washed up tagine which DH refuses to touch in case he breaks it
Put away dry washing
Playroom tidied and baby toys put upstairs to flatpack or lend to sil
Washing for tomorrow sorted
List of jobs for the week written
Accountant emailed with tax details
DD bathed and put to bed
Put away my birthday cards and dusted mantlepiece
Flopped in front of tv and MN
Now in bed with hot choc and chapter of favourite book.

N'night everyone, tomorrow will be a busy day!

slowburner · 15/01/2012 22:50

And cleaned my sink! How could I forget that!

ToffeeWhirl · 16/01/2012 00:59

Monday, 16th January - babystep 16 - irrelevant unless you've subscribed to Flylady, so just keep practising those babysteps.

The mission is in the bathroom.

Monday is your weekly home cleaning hour.

Very busy tomorrow, as I'm taking DS to his CBT appointment at 8.30, rushing DS2 up to school, back to collect DS1 and get him to school, then off out to celebrate my birthday with a friend. Not sure when I'll get time to post - hopefully, in the afternoon.

See you all tomorrow.

Flying erratically this week due to stomach bug and ran a half marathon today so v chuffed with myself :o

And the great thing was that after the race I invited my running pal and her family over to ours for celebration drinks and impromptu barbie, and I didn't have to rush home and panic about the state of my house. A quick 5 min room rescue in the living room and we were good to go. Fantastic feeling not to be embarrassed about the state of my home.

Good job she didn't look in my bedroom or closet though Blush

Jamillalliamilli · 16/01/2012 10:01

I couldn't get on here yesterday but weekend was very token babysteps, pretty much just box ticking to keep hand in, as madly busy, never mind total of 11 hours sleep between fri night and now, but kept up the basics just enough. (Repeat's mantra: "Look at what you did do, not what you didn't, Look at what you did do..")

I have a week from hell ahead, but am determined to be very organised and not be overwhelmed or let go of new habits.
(Health permitting,) Going to be seeing if I can help someone with hoarding issues and not a lover of housework, who's sadly all but buried in their own home, unable to use most of either home, furniture or possessions. :(
If that doesn?t make me look at decluttering in a new light, nothing will!

Toffee, you know I said about not needing to add more post-it notes to the clutter? Where others have their shiny sink reminders, I already have post-it note mole formula's for solids/solutions/gases cluttering up the place.
We have two generations of h/e, as grandchildren also jumped ship. :)
Embarrassingly I don?t know how to pm people, or find pm's. Blush
I?d be grateful if anyone can tell me?

ToffeeWhirl · 16/01/2012 10:42

JustGettingOnWithIt - to pm someone, you 'message poster' (just look along the blue line where your name is on your latest post. It says, Add message, Report or Message poster).Very easy. I will pm you so you have a message waiting (there will be a red dot on the tiny envelope at the top of your MN page and it will also pop up as 'message waiting' on your emails).

I don't envy you helping someone with hoarding issues (did you see that programme at Christmas? Poor man had to tunnel from room to room because he had so much stuff Sad. Hope it's not that bad!). But it's very kind of you.

You are quite right to focus on what you have done, not what you haven't.

cq - hope stomach bug is gone soon. Well done on the half marathon (with a stomach bug Shock?). Fantastic that you could have guests back to your house without worrying about the state of it - the Flying is working! Smile

Have had a very busy morning, getting DS1 to his CBT therapist and DS2 to school on time. Now back with DS1, who is in such a state about going to school that I don't know if I'll get him there. I'm meant to be going out for my birthday lunch with a friend (her b'day last week, so we have a joint celebration), but I won't be able to go if DS1 doesn't go to school. Ah well, we'll see.

BBL.

OP posts:
LinzerTorte · 16/01/2012 10:55

Re PMing, I only noticed earlier that there's no Message poster button on my phone. I ended up switching back to the non-mobile version to send a PM, although the inbox is still there at the top of the page so you can always use that if you're not lazy like me.

No FLYing going on here today as I have all three DC at home (two ill and one refusenik) and am not feeling great myself. A friend has just dropped round all the schoolwork the DDs missed plus homework, so that should keep us busy for most of the afternoon. Hmm

Must look into these magic erasers; they sound amazing. Does anyone know if you can buy them online from anywhere other than Lakeland (postage to Austria extortionate)?

ToffeeWhirl · 16/01/2012 11:32

There are lots available on Amazon, Linzer - like these. Boots do them, but I'm not sure if they sell them online.
