Welcome to the January Fledgling Flyers' thread. A very big thank you to BlueEyeshadow and IceColdBitch for guiding us through the busy Christmas month.

Are you living in CHAOS (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome)? We know the feeling. We follow Flylady's routines, which aim to help you take control of your home, tidying and decluttering and setting up daily and weekly routines that keep your home looking presentable. We also chat quite a lot and swap tips on coping with housework and mess.

From the first of the month, we will be following Flylady's tips on restoring order to our homes. There are three methods, depending on whether you are new to the system or have been following it for a while:

  1. Babysteps
  2. Babysteps + 15 mins daily decluttering in current zone
  3. Babysteps + daily missions

Following the babysteps helps to establish daily routines and build a weekly plan.

If you are overwhelmed by the mess in your home, start with just one thing: shine your sink.

Oh, and don't - really, really ^don't^ - sign up to Flylady's emails.

The first babystep will be posted on 1st January 2012.

Happy New Year.

Smile

Thanks ladies.. My DS (3yo) is having sleep issues (to be tackled this week as we are exhausted), I'd never get up before him!!!
Will clean sink, do the kitchen hotspot, lay out clothes (handy as need to be at office by 6:45 tomorrow) and lay out DS's clothes for my time away - I do that anyway if I go away, I'm not sure DH even knows where DS's clothes are Blush!!

My DH won't know what's happening if he sees me tidy up!! Expect he'll call an ambulance Wink

LinzerTorte · 09/01/2012 09:37

Yes, sorry, didn't make that clear - baking powder and baking soda (US)/bicarbonate of soda (GB) are of course two different things.

Plodding my way through my morning routine at the moment (and trying not to get too distracted), but just taking a coffee break. At least I don't have to worry about cooking dinner today as I did it yesterday. DH, as usual, managed to buy meat with a best before date of the following day, so I made chilli con carne yesterday afternoon ready for today.

scattyspice · 09/01/2012 09:41

Morning Smile.

House in chaos as we spent the weekend moving Ds into the spare room to give DS and DD their own rooms (DS is 8 and DD6 so long overdue). Unfortunately DD has never slept on her own and did not have a good night Sad. Also DS has woken up with a heavy cold (actually sat and cried over his breakfast Sad) so DD is at school and DS and I are having a day off.

To do:
put toys in the shed
WD40 wardrobe
rehome remaining contents of ex spare room
DS spellings (in case of school tomorrow).
hoover/dust
kitchen hotspot

Re home blessing (or house bleugh as its sometimes called). I manage to hoover/dust/mop in 1 hr (only middles), but i have a small bungalow Hmm.

Thefoxsbrush · 09/01/2012 09:43

15 minutes in focus zone- managed to clean microwave (inside and out), clean kettle, clean toaster, clean bread bin, clean front of cooker, clean all cabinet and drawer fronts and clean conservatory doors. Not bad at all. Now having a well deserved cuppa

FleeBee · 09/01/2012 10:25

Another bad night with DD2 so impossibly tired today.

Just to clarify what does "Put out Hotspots" mean? Is it just tidy them up for 2 minutes?

And then "5 minutes room rescue" Is that tidy one room for 5 minutes? Are they the same thing just different timings?

Have swept and mopped kitchen floor first time this year so feel slightly accomplished!

Thefoxsbrush · 09/01/2012 10:31

Fleebee- i think a hotspot is a spot where clutter tends to accumulate. For me it is my mantelpiece and bench next to fruit bowl. Everyday I've been spending 2 mins clearing them so not just tidying them-physically putting all the clutter ( usually mail, recycling, keys or hairbrushes).

5 minute room rescue in spending 5 minutes blitzing an entire room. Hope this help and hope today isn't too tiring for you

MissVerinder · 09/01/2012 10:35

I'm in. Bought a new unit for the kids toys from ikea yesterday. Now I can see the floor, my slack housekeeping has come to light :(

liveinazoo · 09/01/2012 10:47

morning all
sidled over to the babysteps thread but still pop in and lurk for motivation.just posted this story on that thread but wanted to share it with you all too
have a friend in my rd.(she knows im slovenly).she is a cleaning queen her house is spotless.always.i told her i was flying and explained what that meant.told her im shining my sink every night before bed
"you shine your sink.ive never done that"
she made her excuses and darted into her house at express speed(to shine her sink me thinksSmile
i shouldnt feel smug but it was nice to think, that for a little bit, although her sink is always clean, the slattern down the road had a shinier oneGrin

Dalrymps · 09/01/2012 10:48

Aww missverinder don't worry about the floor. You've done a good thing by getting good storage! Focus on the positives!Smile

We need a lot of good storage here and the house isn't that big so it needs to fit our needs exactly. Also needs to be cheapHmm not asking for much then..

Done my morning routine and a couple of extras!
Fed dog
Emptied dw
Fed dc and tidied pots in to dw
Used carpet sweeper in lounge and kitchen
Swished bathroom
Wiped hob, table and surface
Emptied kitchen bin
Put load of washing on
Emptied tumble dryer Smile

Dalrymps · 09/01/2012 10:48

Ooh forgot one

Shined sinkGrin

ToffeeWhirl · 09/01/2012 11:06

Good morning everyone. Any minute now, I will actually be on my own in the house for the first time in several months, as both DC are at school and DH is at a meeting (he works at home) . I am actually looking forward to being able to whizz round the house doing my 'home blessing' without tripping over people.

Buckminster - I'm sure coming down to a grubby sink reminded you of why you need to start the day with a shiny sink. It's horrible, isn't it? But we all have evenings when we just can't do it.

MummyNic - welcome! So glad you could join us from your other thread. There's an explanation about baking powder/soda/bicarbonate of soda here. By the way, I could never get up and dressed before my DC when they were young either (now they are 6 and 12 it's easy). I used to get them up, dressed and breakfasted, then let them watch telly whilst I dressed. It was the only way and even then I usually had a lot of interruptions. Very sorry to hear about your dog, by the way Sad.

Chestnutx3 - you would think Flylady would know about large American houses, wouldn't you? I still think 10 minutes per chore is ambitious, even in my small, terraced English house. Flylady would remind you that you are only meant to do a very quick 'once over' down the middle of the floor when hoovering or mopping.

Angelswings - it's lovely that your house is looking so good thanks to the Flylady tips Smile

Linzer - I agree with you on the 10-minute thingy. And, by the way, my DH often buys meat that's near its sell-by date too. I keep reminding him to get it from the back of the shelf where the date is longest, but he still doesn't always remember. It really throws my menu planning.

Jetstar - don't be daunted. Just choose one room and do a quick five-minute tidy up. Imagine you are bringing a guest in and only have five minutes to sort the room out. What would you tackle in those five minutes? If the room is really cluttered, I would grab a box and throw as much as possible into the box. Get as much as you can off the floor and off the surfaces. Straighten throws or bedspreads. Even if it's not clean, at least it'll look tidier.

Bitchy - how are those teeth today? I agree with you about the key babysteps, by the way. I always ignore the others.

Scatty - sorry your DS is ill. I hope you manage to have a nice day together. Congratulations on managing the one-hour home blessing. So it can be done!

Thefoxsbrush - that is certainly a very well-deserved cuppa. I haven't even started my morning routine yet Blush.

FleeBee - oh, lack of sleep thanks to DC is awful. You should lower your Flying expectations today or you'll suffer for it. Just get through the day. To clarify hotspots and room rescues: hotspots are those places in your house that attract piles of clutter - the top of the piano, the top of the kitchen table, the kitchen corner. Putting out your hotspot means setting your timer for just two minutes and working non-stop in those two minutes to tidy up. Don't obsess and be a perfectionist - just work at getting it looking tidy. Do it every day and the hotspot will never get out of control.

A room rescue means spending five minutes sorting out one room to make it look presentable. I explained it to Jetstar above. Again, don't obsess. Just do what you can in five minutes, then stop.

OK, I must make the most of my quiet house (DH has now gone out and is probably thinking I'll spend the next couple of hours on MN (as if!), so I must prove him wrong).

My list for today:

Get ready for school routine done
School run done
Ring OT about DS1 to book appointment about his handwriting done
Order new carbon dioxide alarm
Text friend to confirm I'm collecting her DS today done
Put rubbish out done
Breakfast for myself done
Visit from neighbour done
Morning routine - empty DW and reload; put washing on, then tumbledry and put away; swish and swipe in the bathroom; empty kitchen bin
Home thingy - recycling out, change sheets, empty all bins, hoover throughout, mop floors, clean mirrors, polish brass, dust
Mission
Lunch
Visit friend this afternoon
School run
PM routine - snacks for DC, empty lunchboxes, check schoolbags and sign any forms
What's for dinner? Pasta for DS2 and his friend; DH cooking fish for me and DS1
Reload DW
Before-bed routine
Bed at decent time

MissVerinder - the Ikea toy unit sounds brilliant. The one I bought from Argos really sorted out DS2's bedroom. I second Dalrymps - focus on the positive!

Liveinazoo - that's a wonderful story Grin. Actually, quite a few houseproud people don't notice shiny sinks or do daily swishes and swipes in their bathroom - you notice these things once you have been Flying for a while Wink.

Dalrymps - we get our cheap storage from Argos or Ikea. Makes such a difference in a tiny house.

Anyone wondering about today's Home Blessing Hour (or house bleugh, as we prefer to call it) can read about it here. However, if you are going to stick strictly to Flylady's advice, you should do the babysteps first before you worry about house 'blessings'.

Changebagsandgladrags · 09/01/2012 11:21

Bit hungover this morning.

Still, sink is shining. There's a load in the washer.

This morning I put my wedding dress up in the loft instead of it being stuffed in the wardrobe/ontop of the wardrobe/on the floor/under the bed. Not sure what to do with it though. Keep it taking up room or give it away?

I took some clothes and books down to the supermarket charity things. Books one was stuffed full so books are back in the boot.

MummyNic · 09/01/2012 11:24

Might have to delay my start on this, beautiful Moli is booked in for 10am on Saturday (due to my going away) and I think every minute should be spent cuddling her. Heart is already broken Sad
But I really ought to clean bathroom... Just shows that life goes on and chores won't end even if you want to hide in a corner Wink
Might stick to lime lite for my sink for today Smile

Changebagsandgladrags · 09/01/2012 11:25

IKEA have the Trofast storage thing which is good for toys. I noticed over the road has a tall one which fits the same amount of boxes as our flat one (considers getting one of these).

The key to IKEA is looking up the warehouse location in advance and not going anywhere near the showroom. Last time we went we were in and out in 5 minutes Grin

ToffeeWhirl · 09/01/2012 11:32

Yes, MummyNic, I agree you are getting your priorities right. I actually slept next to my dog in the week before he was put down (I was 15 and it broke my heart too).

Sad

MummyNic · 09/01/2012 11:46

I did that the night before last Sad
She's got a cancerous lump in her nose, blocking the passage. Had some removed to buy time (Christmas, my birthday & New Year) but it can't be cured or fully removed.
Had hoped we'd have longer but it's not to be. From Wed night I'll sleep on the floor with her, just as I did for the first week we had her.
Ah shit, sat in dentist waiting room (have a broken tooth) and "I'll stand by you" has come on the radio!! Sad
Going to stay off her until next week else I'll hijack this thread to be a support group Blush

WannabeMegMarch · 09/01/2012 12:29

I am finding this thread great inspiration and support. Thanks toffee.
Ta da- did everything on my list yesterday- was so proud of my self. I think the key was that instead of writing a never ending list (which I could have done) I took someones idea, dont know who, and just put 6 things on it and concentrated on those.
So instead of being overwhelmed by my normal 7 page list, I ignored anything that wasnt in my 6 and -duh- got much more done. Sounds obvious, and I had heard it advised before but hadn't implemented it. (is there a lightbulb over head emoticon??? Grin).
So my sink was shiny this morning, clothes laid out, hotel bathroom still clean, kids uniforms ready as were breakfast and bags.
Wrote a list (of 6 things) last night- and have 3 done now.
Plan for rest of today- finish todays list, and write 6 for tomorrow. Smile

RaspberryLemonPavlova · 09/01/2012 13:03

Starting late but I'm joining in please. I've shined my sink and dressed for today, will catch up other babysteps soon.

However, I have to tidy a big pile of papers to find the documents to complete tax return, child tax credit form so that is having slight priority BUT I adapted the de-cluttering advice for the labelled boxes (into re-cycle/shred/file/bin/put away and its great. I usually have piles to finish sorting later which I shove back in the cupboard

QueenMaeve · 09/01/2012 13:12

my utility room organising project

Eggrules · 09/01/2012 13:52

Just visiting from babysteps thread.

Toffeewhirl Thanks for the explanations - it isn't easy to get this information from the Flylady website.

Haagendazs · 09/01/2012 13:55

Hi everyone

MummyNic sending you unMN hugs. It's awful saying goodbye to a much loved dog.
Changebags you can't really have a hangover - they say Champagne doesn't give hangovers Wink
Toffee enjoy your time alone (should you really be spending it flying instead of enjoying some peace and quiet? I admire your dedication.

My 'ta da' list so far is
Dw emptied
breakfast dishes stacked
Hoovered downstairs
Changed dc beds
put away last nights ironing (did 2 hours worth)
Dinner's prepared
Recycling sorted and put out.
Recycling bins washed
Sink shining beautifully
Washing done, dried and put away.
Downloaded and personalised home routines app. It's brilliant and definitely done by someone who knows about flying - it's telling me I'm on zone 2 this week, kitchen!

Next to do list
1)15 minutes declutter my bedroom (I know its kitchen week but this is where the house is at its worst at the moment!)
2)Empty bins around house and take to the tip (I missed the first post Xmas bin day so wheelie bin is full and we only have fortnightly collections, whoops!)
3) Pick dc up

Does anyone know what to do if your washing machine stops dispensing fabric softener? I've cleaned the drawer and the hole it fits in (yuck!) but it's still not dispensing it and things are coming out of the dryer full of static.

Haagendazs · 09/01/2012 14:00

QueenMaeve I'm very very jealous of your organised utility room. Respect!

scattyspice · 09/01/2012 14:01

Done:
put toys in the shed
WD40 wardrobe
rehome remaining contents of ex spare room
DS spellings (in case of school tomorrow).
hoover/dust
kitchen hotspot

mummynic Sad. How awful, don't know what to say.

Cristiane · 09/01/2012 15:37

Dd2 is better, still diarrhoea but more lively (her, not the poo)

However dd1 projectile vomited over the bathroom and then all fight long. Thank goodness it wasn't a focus zone!

I am feeling awful. Stomach churning and dizzy and body just aches. DH too. So no flying here. However, with most of us in bed, not much chance to mess the place up either.

Sorry to be so pathetic. Couldn't go to work today, really hope I can go in tomorrow. Grim.
