Brabantia bins - worth the cost?

We've a nice cream pedal bin for the kitchen from Wilko's - well, it was nice till the foot pedal mechanism broke not that long after we got it.

I'm thinking of getting a replacement and was wondering whether it would be worth paying the extra for a Brabantia one (or another decent make - but Brabantia is the only one I know) to get one that lasts.

The Wilkos one is here and costs £25. The Brabantia one is here and I can get it for about £40.

We can't afford it out of the household budget so I'll have to ask for it as a Christmas present - so I'd prefer the cheapest decent one I can get, as there are lots of things other than a kitchen bin that I'd like as presents! Wink

How come, given the number of people on here who have had the catch break, when I called them about mine they said (effectively) "You what... the catch broke? I can't quite imagine what you mean..." [in a tone of deep scepticism] when it's obviously a common design flaw problem?

They also said that I would have to post the entire lid back to them for them to look at and they would think about sending me a replacement. This was in the middle of summer and my kitchen gets HOT (wall of south-facing windows) so I was not leaving my kitchen bin open for anything. I suppose I should try again now we are in winter.

Overall I swear at it far more than by it. unless you take "by" in the sense of "in close proximity to".

Got mine today, is my present to myself instead of handbag! Is a great gift, ESP since if like me you use it 12 zillion times a day. Keeps on giving :)

The3Bears · 09/12/2011 09:55

I have one they are good, my catch broke and they sent me a new one no questions asked they were lovely.

Tmesis · 09/12/2011 12:08

Did they make you send the whole lid back first, 3Bears?

Hulababy · 09/12/2011 13:40

We didn;t have to send our bin lid back, they just sent us out a new one.

Tmesis · 09/12/2011 15:31

So they do just hate me personally, then... Grin

The3Bears · 09/12/2011 16:31

No she didnt even ask when or where i got the bin just asked for model number and said she'd send a new one out first class.

Not a whole new bin lid just the catch for ours.

Tmesis · 09/12/2011 19:19

That's all I wanted -- but to begin with he seemed to be utterly astonished at the very concept of a broken catch and then insisted that they couldn't possibly just send out a new catch, I would have to wrap up and mail them the entire lid first.

We bought one with wedding gift vouchers five years ago (yes, a bin as a wedding present Grin)

It's been absolutley fine. It's light blue in colour and still looks in pretty good nick, not rust or fade. It also keeps the smells in better than ordinary bins. I'd definately buy another.

VFVF · 09/12/2011 20:52

I should add, ours isn't a pedal bin, it's an older version of this expensive yes but worth shopping around as I'm sure you could get it cheaper. The lid gets bashed pretty hard by toddler DD as she thinks it's good fun, and its withstood her efforts so far!

gremlindolphin · 09/12/2011 21:55

Yes definitely, I have had mine 5 years with 2 dcs who have been obsessed with the lid and it has been fine -haven't had to replace the clip yet!

AngelsfromtherealmsofgloryDog · 11/12/2011 21:19

Well, it arrived

Maybe motivated by this thread, DH said I could take the bin money out of housekeeping and buy something nice with it instead. Now I'm trying to persuade him that a new pushchair footmuff counts as 'something nice'. Wink

AngelsfromtherealmsofgloryDog · 11/12/2011 21:19

Agh, that should say it arrived and I really like it. :)

MonkeyChicken · 07/04/2013 14:57

It's all true, AMAZING! Lid's knackered on our Brabarantia 30L bin. Just went on their website and filled out a form and apparently a new lid is on it's way. Fabulous!

armagh · 07/04/2013 15:56

Have a cream brabantia foot pedal for the past 12 years. I would replace with a Brabantia but i don't have to. Still going great ! Foot pedal is so much more practical than touch, more hygenic too.

EmpressMaud · 07/04/2013 15:59

Oh yes, ours has lasted for years and is still going strong. Well worth the cost.

fussychica · 07/04/2013 16:02

Another vote for simplehuman - very pleased with ours so far. Got it online from Amazon for rather less than it was in JL.

Sleepyfergus · 07/04/2013 16:03

My mum bought me our Bravantua bin and its lovely. The only thing us that its too small and we feel we are constantly having to empty it. It's 35L cherry red cylinder one. So my advice is to get a bigger size, as big as possible according to budget etc. The lid but also broke on ours and they replaced the part free of charge. Their cust service is brilliant.
