Brabantia bins - worth the cost?

We've a nice cream pedal bin for the kitchen from Wilko's - well, it was nice till the foot pedal mechanism broke not that long after we got it.

I'm thinking of getting a replacement and was wondering whether it would be worth paying the extra for a Brabantia one (or another decent make - but Brabantia is the only one I know) to get one that lasts.

The Wilkos one is here and costs £25. The Brabantia one is here and I can get it for about £40.

We can't afford it out of the household budget so I'll have to ask for it as a Christmas present - so I'd prefer the cheapest decent one I can get, as there are lots of things other than a kitchen bin that I'd like as presents!

I bought the brabantia one in stainless steel a few weeks ago.. I love it. And from reading Mumsnet I have discovered that if parts break you can phone Brabantia and they will replace the parts free of charge , so it may work out cheaper in the long run.

I have a Brabantia bin that is now 15 years old. I have replaced the lid catch once and they sent me a free one. I would buy one again.

We have a 50l Brabantia bin in chrome. It's been worth the cost. The catch broke on the lid after a few years. I emailed them and they sent us out a new lid free of charge.

Before you spend 80 quid though, if you've got a TKMaxx near you they usually have them for less than £50.

Oh pants! Now you tell me about the catch! I've bought two bloody bins and then replaced this make with a flaming expensive oxo one! No I don't know what my family do to break them either!

Yes, we bought a Brabantia bin some years ago too (maybe 8-12 years ago, didn't have the receipt). They supposed have a 10-year guarantee, but I'd heard they basically cover them for life so when the lid broke recently I contacted them and got a free one :)

My stainless steel one got crushed when we moved and I managed to replace it with a silver non shiney metal brabantia one from hell asda for £30 on offer (40ltr one)

Unfortunately it's a present or not at all - we're a very low income household (I'm a SAHM and DH is a student) so anything which isn't strictly essential has to come out of birthday / Christmas money. Thankfully our families are generous with that. :) (Mind you, we lived a bit like that even when we did have money!)

Also on my Christmas list are nappy wet bags, tupperware pots and oven gloves. The bin would be the luxury item.

I had a chrome brabantia and the pedal mechanism broke fairly quickly. I didn't realise you could get the parts to mend them.

BTW I would go for stainless not chrome. The chrome one went slightly rusty where someone kept washing it down with household cleaner.

I only empty ours once a week. It doesn't smell as all the food waste goes in the food bin so it is mostly plastic bags, eg. salad bags, that can't go in the recycling that get put in there.

Yes, I only empty ours between once a week and once a fortnight - whenever it gets full.

We don't put any food waste in it though as that goes in the recycling.

I'm definitely going for a solid colour one - we're not diligent enough with cleaning for anything either stainless steel or chrome!

Angel if it helps, DH and I are getting a piece of glass for our stove as our only xmas present. At least we've got each other , and it's better than the funeral wreath which my Mum bought me one year...

I am with ladyintheradiator on this: if you do not need a big bin, you might as well maximise your kitchen space by getting a smaller one.

I got my Brabantia bin 20 years ago and I have had no issue with it. It looks like this, except mine is cream.

The supermarket bags are a perfect fit for it too!

that looks like the one I had that went rusty.

Mine has been fine but I think the cream paint has somehow 'protected' it.

Having said that, my sister's Brabantia bin got rusty inside: the cause of it seems to be the tea bags and coffee grains being thrown in the bin whilst still hot.

I love my Brabantia - I have a black one with a press lid.

they are nice but I have just bought a simplehuman bin its lovely :)
