How do you wash a black and white stripey top? Darks or colours?

My dd13 was sorting her washing, and asked which pile a new striped black and white top should go in. Does anyone know the answer?

I would go dark, but maybe keep the temp lowish-ish, 40c or less.

Thanks that was quick!

Actually I would go light or else the white stripes will go grey.

oreocrumbs · 14/11/2011 22:22

I would say dark but with one of those colour catcher cloths in. I swear by them!

OriginalPoster · 14/11/2011 22:23

Oooh, I've started a controversial thread.... Grin

light 30 degrees

OriginalPoster · 14/11/2011 22:25

Have never tried a colour catcher cloth...

I nearly always wash at 30, trying to be green, except for towels and sheets which get a hot wash.

Well, yes you have OP. What sort of a mother are you, not knowing how to wash your dd's tops? Call social services Grin

I'm right though, the others know nothing.

So votes so far

Dark 2

Light 2

I said dark because if it does run badly then it is one piece of clothing that is spoiled rather than the whole load. After the first few washes then I would put it in with lighter things - but only after I was sure it won't run

BrawToken · 14/11/2011 22:27

I always wanted to know that too. Now I am none the wiser Grin

Franke

Dd13 is doing her own washing, is that a form of abuse?

OP posts:
franke · 14/11/2011 22:28

Yes, but the potential colour run from a few black stripes are not going to have the same impact on a whole lights wash as a whole darks wash on a few white stripes, iykwim.

Jojay · 14/11/2011 22:28

I'd go for light, but only if it was a decent brand that was unlikely to run.

franke · 14/11/2011 22:28

Shame on you. Leave him. er, wait...

OriginalPoster · 14/11/2011 22:28

Oreo

I like your thinking...

It is from Next

I would wash it with other light-ish colours. I would never wash it with white clothes or very pale colours such as pale pink. However I admit that I do a separate (strict) white wash.

Actually, I may well hand wash it the first time and observe what happens. If you handwash a new garment with a white item (something that doesn't matter like an old white flannel or white cloth) then this will give you an idea of whether the colour runs or not.

onepieceofcremeegg · 14/11/2011 22:32

OP stop dripping, give it a proper spin! Wink

franke · 14/11/2011 22:32

Next you say? Wash seperately, By Hand.

oreocrumbs · 14/11/2011 22:34

Actually I'm fairly confident with those cloths so if you got some you would be fairly safe in either wash! Not that franke has moved me to a fence sitting position or anything Grin

OriginalPoster · 14/11/2011 22:36

So Next is not a decent brand?

Now I'm offended, she gets most of her stuff in New Look, which I would have thought more likely to run.

Is it relevant how big the stripes are, and whether it is black mainly or white mainly?

It is mainly white with a varying thickness of black line iyswim

dark with colour catcher, or hand wash with colour catcher to stop the dark running into the light. Ds and DH have striped rugby shirts that are old and still have the right colours in the stripes

CointreauVersial · 14/11/2011 22:37

Can I make a radical suggestion.....a "mediums" wash?

Not dark, not light. I mean greys, pinks, light blues and other colours which won't run BUT also won't get damaged if another item does run.

I do about a gazillion loads a week, so at least one is a "medium" wash.

choccyp1g · 14/11/2011 22:37

I'd wash it on its own the first few times. Then with darks and a colour catcher, or maybe with "odd ones" and a colour catcher.

But I admit I am wierd because I split into whites, reds/pinks, darks, yellow/greens and odd ones that won't fit with anything else.

Considering how little effort I make over all other housekeeping, it really is wierd.
