How do you wash a black and white stripey top? Darks or colours?

My dd13 was sorting her washing, and asked which pile a new striped black and white top should go in. Does anyone know the answer?

I would put it in a 'medium' wash (light colours).

How intelligent is your washing machine?

Could you maybe explain to it that the first time you put the top in (say with a white load) you would like it to wash to white aspects of the top only.

And the second time you put it in (say with a dark load) you would appreciate it if it would wash just the black stripy aspect??

I love mumsnet.

I asked this question six months ago and didn't get a single reply. My jumper has resided at the bottom of my laundry bin as I still don't know what to do with it. Only worn it once.....I've probably got too fat for it now.

To add more confusion to the mix, my Dsis reckons that almost all synthetic fabrics don't run. So what is this top made of?

onepieceofcremeegg · 15/11/2011 21:09

Viva

Hand wash it if you're really not sure. Warmish water with a bit of laundry liquid. Have a look to see if the colour has "run". Cold rinse (by hand). Quick spin in machine by itself.

If no evidence of the jumper "running" then put it in a medium wash (medium colours) next time. :)

But surely a striped top with white stripes is by definition going to be colour fast, because nobody would ever buy them otherwise, they would be one wear clothing and I see lots of people wearing them.

I would put it in lights.

LivingDead · 15/11/2011 21:23

Also most clothes are colour fast, obviously jeans and heavily dyed cottons aren't, but most clothes are I have found.

My washes are lights, darks, and icky (ie pooey nappies, dust sheets).

Stripy tops go in with darks and get a colour catcher used sometimes.

NotMostPeople · 15/11/2011 21:39

Sort of. I was listening to this the other day which is where I got my washing info from www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00ldrqz

TeWihara · 15/11/2011 22:17

'xactly LivingDead! I would always put a stripy top in with the lights as unless designers were absolute fecking idiots they wouldn't have made clothes that run onto themselves. Thus it is not going to run onto anything else either.

The thing you have to be wary of is where the white sections are a different fabric to the coloured sections, in which case a cool wash is the best bet.

trixymalixy · 15/11/2011 22:27

Exactly livingdead. If the dark stripes ran then the top would be unwearable after one wash, which is why striped tops go in with the lights.

OriginalPoster · 15/11/2011 22:32

It's made of cotton. Like thingamajig I'm reluctant to do a wash for just one top...

But then it's a waste of money to dye other clothes by mistake too Confused

Thanks for link, notmostpeople

Why don't they teach useful stuff like this at school? GCSE laundry?
