I want a really nice, functional sink tidy

New kitchen, can't bear to clutter the lovely new top with plastic tat that doesn't even catch drips.

Haven't found one online yet though -the ones that are big enough are plasticky and the nice-looking ones are too small (need space for 2 brushes as one for dog bowls, other smaller brushes, as well as dishcloth, fairy etc)

Anyone got or seen a good one please?

Sorry I'm no use but watching to see if anyone comes up with anything I might like Grin

PigletJohn · 14/11/2011 10:48

how about a tray?

GrimmaTheNome · 14/11/2011 10:57

A tray? Well, I went Hmm but actually a small tray plus something to stand brushes in might not be a bad idea.

What about getting a few pretty vintage-y china/glass tumblers/glasses/vases/dishes and sticking different brushes in those. Then decant fairy into a nice looking glass bottle with dispenser. (Then you can buy massive bulk plastic bottles and store under sink). Doesn't sound very practical, but I think it would work and look nice as long as you just rinsed them out regularly. The specially designed things get horribly mucky pretty quick anyway.

Or www.aplaceforeverything.co.uk/home-storage/clutter-storage-pot?offset=20&ret=384 this is the nicest one I've come across searching for standard ones. (Am looking for something too as currently use a small tray and gross grey brush stand thing and it looks disgusting!)

GrimmaTheNome · 14/11/2011 14:42

Mmm - I wouldn't go vintage-y myself but that sort of approach probably is better than any of the 'tidies'. Dishcloths are never going to look good whatever, are they?

just found this - labourandwait.co.uk/moreInfo.asp?prodID=266 - not quite sure how it works - do you stick it on a plate so the water draining through is caught? - but it looks quite chic (for a better picture go to this link and scroll down looking for 'draining jar' - also see all the nice looking wood brushes - labourandwait.co.uk/frameset-products.htm )

however, nice as it is, it really only works for brushes, and I never use my brush so will probably just chuck - then just need something for dishcloth and scourers, which as you say, will never look nice. the search continues... (it's amazing what you can get stuck into on the internet when there's really really dull work to be done!)

How about www.distinctlyliving.co.uk/useful-beautiful-unique/shop/1/kitchen/40/storage/2104/sink-tidy/ ?

I'm considering getting this one :-) I know it only has one brush holder though...

mumblechum1 · 14/11/2011 17:24

marking place for inspiration. Currently everything's in a tupperware box (lidless) on the kitchen sink which looks pretty naff.

The ones so far are all too small - I need something to take a scrubby thing, a wipey thing, the spray stuff and the washing up liquid.

Off to look at John Lewis

GrimmaTheNome · 14/11/2011 19:16

lauren - yes, I found that one too and its the best of any I've seen- if it came in cream I'd have it but really don't want white (just to be awkward)

OP posts:
schroeder · 14/11/2011 19:55

What about this?

laurenamium · 14/11/2011 19:58

I thought that too grimma white would look a bit odd with my cupboards, I might try it though!

GrimmaTheNome · 14/11/2011 19:59

Sorry, too plasticky.

OP posts:
schroeder · 14/11/2011 20:49

Well, I tried.

GrimmaTheNome · 14/11/2011 22:57

It wasn't tatty, so marks for effort Grin

bessie26 · 14/11/2011 23:05

No suggestions, but watching with interest.

schroder yours is top of my list so far, it's much much better than what I've got atm (crappy wire frame thing which leaks water & leaves rust marks on my windowsill)

SleepyFergus · 14/11/2011 23:07

Have you looked at Lakeland Plastics? I'm sure they have a few of varying sizes/complexities!!

GrimmaTheNome · 14/11/2011 23:07

Oh good! Smile

Tasteful plastic suggestions allowed then Grin

OP posts:
GrimmaTheNome · 14/11/2011 23:10

Fergus - that's the first place I looked, nothing quite hit the spot (will doubtless be finding I want all sorts of other Lakeland stuff though ... more e-cloths to keep everything lovely and shiny for sure!)

OP posts:
SleepyFergus · 14/11/2011 23:19

Ah yes, beware the lure of the Lakeland catalogue!
Good luck with your quest!

GrimmaTheNome · 14/11/2011 23:27

And then there's storage jars. Nice unfussy ones without twee lettering or bloody spots all over. There's hundreds of jars to filter through.

I use a boat shaped pot-pourri dish from Sainsburys. Weird, but when I spotted it in the sale it was exactly the right size, shape and colour, only £2.50 and not spotty. It fits a bottle of fairy in with the sponge one side or it and the cloth / scrubber on the other. And best of all, it catches drips but is super-easy to wash out once a week or as needed. Of course, they don't do it any more so it isn't a fat lot of use - but you might find something similar.

We use dishbrushes that suction onto the side of the sink - Ikea. The only thing we don't have sorted is a tidy way of having handwash - I covet those Penguin dispensers!

bessie26 · 15/11/2011 15:55

Have you tried searching amazon for "sink tidy"?

GrimmaTheNome · 15/11/2011 16:53

Have you tried searching amazon for "sink tidy"?
yes, that was the second thing after Lakeland Grin
I'm being fussy, I know!

OP posts:
GrimmaTheNome · 15/11/2011 17:05

Gentle - yes, I'll keep my eye out for something odd like that. A trip to the local garden centre cum knicknack store might turn up something - I want some new plant holders for the windowsill anyway.

OP posts:
Mackrelmint · 23/11/2011 11:22

I realise this is a bit old now, but I'm still searching for various bits and pieces for my new home and came across this today, which I think is quite chic (as far as sink tidys go) - although possibly not big enough for the fairy?
