This is the most dull topic I have ever posted - what's the best floor mop?

I need a new floor mop - mainly for large, tiled kitchen floor. It gets filthy so I think I need one with a scrubby bit on. I had a Vileda Magic Mop but that has a small head so took ages - switched to a bigger Vileda but that one leaves weird marks on the floor as the water dries... I hear talk of steam mops but have no idea what they're like (or even what they're meant for).

Anybody got a mop they love?!

No but looking for an answer too.

Catsmamma · 22/09/2011 08:04

Get a proper old fashioned one! Heavy cotton head, big sturdy wooden handle and a proper metal mop bucket, like the ones they used to have in school!

The head really picks up the water, the proper bucket and wooden handle mean you can really lean on it to wring it out.

psssshaw to your flimsy vileda nonsense!

LOL @ flimsy vileda nonsense :) But, catsmamma, you can't scrub dried gunk off with those floppy 'strips of rags' type mops, can you?

Maryz, why don't you like steam mops?

Because you have to (apparently) clean the floor before you use them

Oh dear God, that's those out then :)

We have a lakeland e-cloth mop and I love it! Gets all the gunk off tiles and wooden floor, when I have finished the cloth goes in the washing machine and is ready to use again like new Grin

ColdSancerre · 22/09/2011 10:01

I have one of those flat ones with the special bucket. I like it it because errr well I have never really thought about reasons for liking.

like this

That Lakeland one gets lots of good reviews, sugar&spice - can you scrub with it though? Say, for example, a slattern didn't pick up the dropped bits of spagbol that the kids had for tea last night and it's got trodden into the floor and dried. Would it get that off?

OP posts:
sugarandspiceandallthingsnice · 22/09/2011 10:12

Yep, it's good with dried on stuff too, you can scrub with it. It has 2 sides, one being rougher than the other (though I don't usually bother turning it over mid wash, just use the rougher side for my kitchen floor).

If you can love a mop I love this one! No chemicals, no storing buckets, just sling it in the wash at the end Smile

PassTheTwiglets · 22/09/2011 10:17

Right, I'm almost convinced. Can I ask one more question first? HOw do you clean/rinse it mid-wash? With my old mop, you dunk it in the water, squeeze the water out and then carry on - it looks like you can't squeeze water out of this one, so do you just swish it around in clean water every now and again?

OP posts:
sugarandspiceandallthingsnice · 22/09/2011 10:36

I rinse it under the tap and then carry on, then stick it in washing machine at the end.

valiumredhead · 22/09/2011 10:42

E cloth mop - brilliant, had it about a year now and still love it! get two heads so one can go in the wash.

PassTheTwiglets · 22/09/2011 12:44

Right, E cloth mop it is. Thanks ladies!

If I have helped someone else select their cleaning tools, does that count towards me doing some cleaning myself?! Hmm

Why thankyou I think Grin.
Umm, Lakeland online?! I think our local Dunelm Mill sell them, sadly for the same price.

PassTheTwiglets · 22/09/2011 15:41

I ordered one from Lakeland online - £4.95 deilvery a bit steep but hey ho. I was most disappointed to see that they deliver the next day, so would have to clean the floors tomorrow, but luckily they said it will actually take 5-7 days to deliver it. Phew :)

we have dogs, nothing remains long enough to get caked on.

but you can use the old fashioned ones with boiling hot water....floor dries super quick too

sugarandspiceandallthingsnice · 22/09/2011 19:47

Let us know how you get on with it twiglets!

plumtart · 22/09/2011 21:28

to make sure the yukky streak marks go I mop first (jvc twist mop) then I go over it with what used to be called a swifter - mop handle with a flat microfibre head that lifts up a lot of the residual water.

Interestingly it is the flat drying head that gets much dirtier than the mop and bucket - so you seem to need the drying to lift of the dirty water.

NatureAbhorsAHoover · 23/09/2011 11:12

I love love LOVE the Muji e-cloth mop! Buy online or find a Muji shop.

You buy the handle and mop head which has velcro on it.

then wet the cloth under the tap (no buckets!) and squirt a bit of cleaner onto it - whichever brand you like, I go by smell and lack of sticky residue - and stick it to the mop.

Goes in the washing machine when finished. It is so easy it's turned mopping the kitchen floor from weekly palaver to a 60 second task that I should do every day but don't quite Grin

PassTheTwiglets · 28/09/2011 18:33

Well the Lakeland E-cloth mop arrived today. Will report back tomorrow when I've used it. I kept hoping it wouldn't arrive, so that I didn't have to clean the floor :)

Don't know about floor mops but just spotted a fun Dotty carpet from a company called Alternative Flooring, so swapping stripes for spots on my stairs! But could do with a good floor mop and also in need of compact affordable hoover with great suction as mine on its last legs.....any recommendations?

valiumredhead · 28/09/2011 18:54

I have just discovered Dettol Direct To the Floor floor cleaner - you just up end the bottle and squeeze out the liquid, then mop over with a damp E cloth mop - bloody fab Grin
