Back to Fly school for September Fledglings

Welcome to the September 2011 Fledgling Flying thread! Hang up your microfibre cloths and park your buckets here!!

[Sorry - I've namechanged again - but remain SC]

This is where from the 1st of the month, we attempt to declutter and follow the 30-step wisdom of Flylady (minus cutesy language and a surfeit of e-mails) with lots of chat and support and mutual motivation along the way. (More info available here )

Humungous thanks to our previous thread leader Blue for navigating us all through the August school holidays...and for doing it so consistently and well!!

As usual we will be following a three-pronged approach - and don't worry - we are all at different stages. Some of us (SC stares at feet) -are even embarrassingly stuck at decluttering stage after two years Blush

  • repeat or start baby steps (again!)
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone

or

  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

All newcomers welcome!

Haha Fuzzled I guess you're not in my neck of the woods then, steady heavy rain all morning so far in Hampshire.....

I have done one load of washing but can't face the walk up the garden to the shed to put it in the dryer. Also done morning routine.

I am about to put in my order for an Organised Mum calendar. I know we talked about these quite a bit last year. Has anyone tried using the Life Book as a basis for their Control Journal?

Toffeefudgecake · 04/09/2011 11:47

Not so necessary for littlies, Silvery. I wouldn't have done it just for my five-year old. However, you could still do a 'dressing in uniform' dress rehearsal if you wanted.

I have barely thought about DS2 going back to school because I am so preoccupied with DS1. I just remembered to get him to try on his school trousers yesterday in case he'd grown out of them (luckily not).

substantiallycompromised · 04/09/2011 12:36

Helllooooo [argh] 27 posts since last night!! [gulp] You lot are far too busy Grin

Afraid I don't have much time for personals as we have friends arriving any minute NOW. All prepped so will start post but apologies in advance if I have to break off abruptly, will catch up later

A warm welcome to PerfectlyChaotic! I see MessyMammy and Whoknows have kindly explained the basics - but don't hesitate if you have any more questions. Don't worry if you don't understand it all at once - it will become clear as you go along (always feel like leader of wierdo sect when I type that) but it happens to be true. Just start with the baby-steps, ignore the barftastic language on the website and all will be well. (You are not alone. We've been living in a house with holes in the walls-- renovating for a decade!)

Ouch sounds like you had an extremely productive night!! In desperation, I occasionally pull an all nighter (although I'm getting a bit old and weary for it nowadays). It's a lovely feeling when you wake up the next day and kid yourself in to thinking that the house cleaning gnome has visited....(even though it didn't feel lovely at 3am!) Well done!!

Silvery I'll resurrect an earlier post about benefits of a cj (when I can find it). I would recommend it though. It does save time on a number of organisational fronts (not scrabbling around to find emergency numbers etc) and I find it particularly comes in to its own when I am about to go on holiday (can just hand it over to house/pet-sitter and not give it another thought). Helps when first starting Flying too. YOu have to adapt it to suit yourself though and I think quite a few people prefer apps on their phones nowadays ...I'm a bit of a Luddite and prefer paper ....

Messy keeping on top of things = achieving great things in my book! This is what this system is all about so don't be too hard on yourself. Btw, it is so not true that us nesbitting old-timers only prop up the bar ... we re-arrange cushions and throw pistachio shells at one another sometimes too Wink Grin

Rowingboat relieved you haven't been inundated with e-mails, perhaps the Fat Fairy is stream-lining her system (about time). Sorry you are still feeling rotten. Hope you recover today!! Sorry, not sure about moth sprays ... but will find James Wong recipe for natural (but effective) repellent later on and post

Oh no, hope you are not succumbing to a virus too MC .Sounds as if you are supremely well organised for start of school ...hope your dh can offer you some support today so you can get a bit of rest. BTW, I 'm rather afraid about what someone would deduce about my life if they emptied my handbag ... broke and mad probably!!

Haunted great to know there is a fellow gp-keeper on the thread. How many do you have? SC falls over in Shock at Christmas present wrapping!! Now that's what I call thinking ahead!!

Fuzzled I'm v. interested in and impressed by your Christmas address downloading techniques. Tried to do a mail-merge thingy last year and it all went horribly wrong. May be back to ask advice!! It's pouring with rain here today btw - massive thunder storm in night has driven the sun away ...

Crikey Toffee you are preparing with military precision! I'm sure all your hard work will pay off tomorrow morning. Hope you are not too apprehensive and that it all goes well x

Whoknows great to hear how well the system is working for you and that is has made a tangible difference to your life. I know we are old cynics on here and like to criticise the Fat Fairy a lot (and her tan tights and barf inducing language and acronyms) but the underlying system is effective. Sorry, can't help re organised Mum but hopefully someone else can.

Waves to CheerfulYank

Right, dh has not yet arrived back with his friends... they were meant to be coming for lunch at 1pm ... lucky the food is adaptable ...Better go and ring and find out what is happening.

Enjoy your Sunday everyone.

SC I also prefer to see things written on paper.
This morning I did the first 5 steps of the control journal. Just need to get a binder or something and some wipe-off pens to cross stuff of on plastic wallets, or type it all up on a spreadsheet...........

OuchPassVodka · 04/09/2011 14:34

4hrs sleep is not enough. need to move :(

OuchPassVodka · 04/09/2011 14:40

plan for today:

ds to match
ds in bath ready for school
double check length of ds' school trousers - thanks to whoever reminded me fried brain
collect kit for tomo
make sure everything is ready for tomo
early night
sleep.

feetheart · 04/09/2011 16:06

No time for personals then SC :) Hope visitors turned up.

Hello to everyone else. Very impressed with school preparations Toffee, hope they are calming everyone's nerves.

Serious CBA today, mainly due to doing Midnight Walk last night - 10 miles in just under 3 hours. EXCELLENT way to talk non-stop with lovely friend without being interrupted. Slightly extreme but good fun :o

However have chicken stew in slow cooker and DC in front of Scooby Doo. Am about to doze off on sofa I think.
School back on Tuesday here but there are serious doubts as to whether school will be ready - lots of building work, don't envy new head having to make that decision.

Nap calling, hopefully back to some sort of normality tomorrow.

SilveryMoon · 04/09/2011 16:31

Ouch Hope you're not feeling too bad.
feet well done on the midnight walk.

Ds1 doesn't go back to school until Tuesday, Ds2 starts nursery tomorrow because I start work tomorrow. Ds1 is going to a friends house.

Quick list update
TA-DA
Shower and dress
Swish and swipe
Boys to dress
Make beds
Hoover
Ironing
Clean clothes away
Washing machine on
Babystep (not doing so may look at control journal)
Go to friends house
Double check everyone's bags for tomorrow
What's for dinner?

TO DO
Tidy away
Lay out tomorrows clothes
Make tomorrows lunches
Clean kitchen
Go to bed early

So, I have made a start on compiling a control journal, and I know she says not to get all perfectionist about it, but I can't help it. If it's something I'm going to actively use and look at a coupe of times a day, I want it to look nice!
What have you all done? Do you just have it hand written? Do you use plastic wallets?
[saddo emoticon]

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 04/09/2011 16:47

Silvery - I'm undecided, have got an A4 plastic folder with plastic sleeves in as recommended, but it feels to big to have out all the time, however you can update the sheets by re-printing them. At the moment I have drafted them in a notebook but not sure what to do next. I have got an Iphone so that's an option too.

SilveryMoon · 04/09/2011 17:09

WhoKnows Last time I put one together I had an A4 ringbinder (which now holds all successful recipes for family dinners), and I typed up all routines etc so it all looked pretty neat. I didn't use plastic wallets though, I allocated set jobs to set days.
This time I don't have as much time because I will be working full-time, so am thinking of typing a table up so I'm able to tick off all jobs as they are done register style iykwim............................

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 04/09/2011 17:30

I need an A5 loose leaf binder!

OuchPassVodka · 04/09/2011 17:34

ds decided he would rathe go play at a friends then go to the match. I sensibly went back to bed so just about to get up and tackle the list Grin I feel a little bit more human finally.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 04/09/2011 18:39

Woo how I've managed to shine my sink

Toffeefudgecake · 04/09/2011 18:42

Thanks for the round-up, SC. I haven't had time to read through the thread today, so it's good to see what everyone is doing.

I told DH, earnestly, that I was perfectly capable of 'cat-napping' and would be awake in half an hour. He woke me two and a half hours' later Blush. He decided I must need it and let me sleep (nice DH). I did try to get everyone out for 'exercise' this afternoon, but nobody actually wanted to go and I realised I was beginning to get a tad too controlling (because I'm so worried about tomorrow). DS1 said, "It's the last day of the holidays and I just want to relax at home and go on the computer". So I let him.

Managed to serve dinner earlier than usual and am now typing this whilst DS2 is in his bath. Aiming to get him to bed by 7(ish) and then get DS1 to bed by 8. Neither will sleep by then, but at least they'll be resting. DS1 is watching last night's episode of 'Dr Who' with DH right now, then I'll be reading him his bedtime story (the final chapter, fittingly) before turning out the light.

Will definitely need a glass of wine tonight. And must have an early night. Stayed up late watching a DVD of Richard Armitage in 'North and South' last night .

Aiming to be up by 6am tomorrow.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 04/09/2011 18:52

Woo how I've managed to shine my sink

SilveryMoon · 04/09/2011 19:16

Toffee I'll take one of those Wine Only 1 mind, I have to be up at 6am tomorrow.

Got EVERYTHING on my list done today, thank God.
Everything is ready for tommow, all bags packed and in the 'launch pad' Grin

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 04/09/2011 19:19

Thanks Toffee . Do your DCs normally go to bed at those times in term time? We put lights out for ours at 8.30 but they are still raring to go most of the time (usually settled/sleep by 9). Which I know is quite late for 5 and 7 years old. I kind of don't mind because they never seem to be tired as a result and we have a nice time together the last hour or so before bed time, but it doesn't leave much adult time, it's no wonder I am completely unable to stick to Flylady 10.30 bedtimes (or get up early in the morning).

coostoonettle · 04/09/2011 19:23

Good evening everyone.

Asolutely exhausted so a ta da list will do

Snoke alarms done yesterday
most of washing caught up on, no longer mountain from hell
s/s dw and td all done
party for dd done. ds came with us and bravely managed to make do with having a play and no party food as he wasnt actually invited but as it was soft play i took him along and bought him some nice treats whilst dd was having party food.
went to work to meet dh for lunch, got caught by several customers and ended up eating at 4.30.
dh bathed dc whilst i swept floors.
car seats moved into fil car as dh is away for the next 4 days at a trade show. (all alone, ds starting school and todjo here is responsible for dc drops off kin opposite villages and opening up the office wed thurs all on my tod!)

toffee ds watching dr who? the new series didnt start last night did it?

My christmas journal starts this week, main things are list making and budget setting and when anyone mentions christmas smile smile smile Grin.

Right off to figure out what im to do now. DH might need help packing.

Tomorrow as its officially our last day of freedom i am taking dc to see the smurfs in 3d at the cinema and a good old mcdonalds too.

I hope you all have a good night.

Be back tomorrow to stress over what i've forgotten for school. Woke up at 3.30am last night fretting about whether the school list said that they needed socks in the gym bag Hmm. Oh and i did discover what i had forgotten to get for school, a school run mummy outfit. Old rubbishy fat clothes it is. Grin

OuchPassVodka · 04/09/2011 19:30

Well i think today has been a fail. I guess it was pretty much expected though.

BlueEyeshadow · 04/09/2011 20:43

Just about got through today although it was pretty trying in parts due to rain-induced stir-craziness. Have cooked a roast dinner and cleaned the kitchen, but no other flying done.

Tomorrow I need to do food shopping and get through the day. Is it wrong that I can't wait for DS1 to start school?!

As for control journals, I have a general list of tasks for each day by the computer upstairs and a notepad with to do lists and packing lists downstairs. The other stuff that flylady keeps in the control journal (recipes, address lists etc) I have seperately.

Hope all goes well tomorrow Toffee and Silvery.

Nettle I'm afraid yesterday was the 2nd episode of this (half) series of Dr Who.

droitwichmummy · 04/09/2011 20:48

Well today I have washed, and washed, and washed, and am STILL WASHING!!! Didn't help that I decided to strip the beds this morning as well as do all the holiday stuff.

What else - went to collect the Dcats from the cattery and the car wouldn't startAngry. Woke DH up who then tinkered with it for 2 hours before calling the RAC who couldn't fix it. DH then declined their offer to tow it to our local garage so it is there for tomorrow. Not sure how it is supposed to get there on its own when it won't go.... Good job I rang Dsis who took me to cattery so I have my girls backSmile

PILS arrived to lend us their car bearing roast beef (we should have been going for lunch) so DH can get to work and we have tea for tomorrow if I remember to buy potatoes.

Have also made plum jam (in breadmaker) as my parents had left us some while we were away.

Back to work tomorrow. I have Wine help yourselves

rowingboat · 04/09/2011 21:54

Hi all,
oh my goodness you have all been posting away like a crazy penpal.

I have sinned and no babystep, just washing up and dinner, but was at work.

Haunted I was laughing at your babystep, well done! It probably doesn't matter if you do the babysteps one each day, I certainly won't be. Grin

messymammy · 04/09/2011 22:30
