Do you wear a pinny? Or am I just an old woman all-ready...

I enjoy the odd bit of cooking, have a DS who is a messy eater and I am a bit fussy about some of my clothes...a pinny seems to be a sensible option, not the floral just round the waist ones but a cotton chef style one.

I read a comment in a cook book, Tana Ramsays I think that made me think, oh, perhaps no one else does nowadays Hmm ?

Do you?

I wear the DPs pinny for cooking sometimes but always for baking.

It's a sturdy striped cotton one and is big enough to cover the back of me. It also has a tea towel on a little loop so I always have one to hand when I'm messy.

mummyinaflurry · 20/06/2011 20:22

Housecoat! Hehe - is that a Scottish term? My aunts in Edinburgh always referred to a "housecoat" but I've never heard anyone south of the border use it.

Lunabelly · 21/06/2011 08:15

Yes, we do here in deepest darkest Here. And Hilda Ogden wore one.

itshappenedagain · 21/06/2011 09:39

i have far too many pinnies, they all have a big pocket in the front . All have diffent jobs, so don't use same one for cleaning, as i do for cooking. i think i may have ben a farmers wife in a previous life! oh and im 26 and have been wearing them for years!

HmmmIwonder · 21/06/2011 10:26

not only do i wear a pinny, but i got it specially made for me on request by my dear mum. sadly she is too frail to visit me and see me wearing it while i make dinner.

lou33 · 21/06/2011 10:38

I have a black one with pockets, and i also have a clean cloth hanging out of one of them ready to wipe my hands or tidy up the presentation of the food. I am cooking or baking all the time and i am 44, and yesterday aside from the usual meals i also did pork pies and apple samosas for snacks. Today will be a normal loaf, and some courgette and cheddar bread. I would be covered in flour if i didnt use a pinny.

Lunabelly · 21/06/2011 12:36

Courgette and cheddar bread? MMMM!!! Where can I find a recipe for that? Is it bread machine compatible (I have crap hands so couldn't knead with them, and an unhelpful a toddler)

Poledra · 21/06/2011 12:44

I loves me blur and white stripy pinny. Worn almost every night for cooking, as I don't usually have time to change out of my work clothes before making dinner.

HOWEVER - see all those threads about
'Where has my toddler hidden my phone/keys/credit cards'?
I always want to respond 'have you checked the pocket of your pinny?' as my missing things are almost always there Blush. I blame the toddler, but suspect it's really me putting them there and forgetting.....

lou33 · 21/06/2011 12:48

It's not a machine recipe sorry, but it doesnt have much kneading. The recipe is in the june edition of good food, so you should be able to find it online. Search their site for courgette potato and cheddar bread.

meltedchocolate · 21/06/2011 14:13

I sometimes do and I am 21 :)

timetosmile · 23/06/2011 21:14

Mine is scarlet with santas and reindeers all over. DS1 looks askance when his friends come for tea (in June), but then at 11, he looks askance at me frequently these days.....

thisisyesterday · 23/06/2011 21:16

yes, I do and i'm only 30

it's white with black flowers all over it

PrettyCandles · 23/06/2011 21:32

missorinoco, you need a lab coat Grin

Wearing an apron when doing a potentially messy job is fine, but I hate it when I forget to take my apron off, and only realise when I sit down to eat or flop on the sofa. That is so mumsy.

AliceAirhead · 23/06/2011 21:46

For years I vehemently resisted wearing something I considered a such a potent symbol of women's enslavement to domesticity, now I happily wear my girly flowery pink apron all the time when I'm cooking and don't give a crap about what it might say about my social status. Frankly, I'm a sloppy cook who can't be arsed with scrubbing stains out of my clothes.

I think my prior resistence may be attributed to the apron my mum bought for me to use for HE at secondary school. It had a cutesy cartoon of a girl holding a placard saying 'Down with women's lib'. I wish I could say she was being ironic...

ChuckYouFarlie · 24/06/2011 15:49

I have a butcher's striped apron, but am now in total lust with those Anthropoligie aprons!!!

BTW, what makes a pinny a pinny and not an apron? I thought a pinafore was a tunic (ie a tabard type thingy), and what you're all calling a pinny we folks from Australia would still call an apron or possibly a bib apron.

Flisspaps · 24/06/2011 15:54

I have a lovely green floral apron because I am incredibly messy when cooking and end up ruining perfectly good clothes with fat or tomato stains. I'm 29.

PigletJohn · 25/06/2011 11:53

I use a bue-and-white one if cooking anything splashy. On reflection I think a white lab-coat would be better (I sometimes use one for painting and DIY) to keep my shirt clean.

I am never going to wear a floral pinny.

pollyteapot · 28/06/2011 17:31

I have 3 pinnys and I love them. And I wear a bandana type headband from Claires accessories often to keeo my hair out of my eyes if the cleaning is intense. Makes total sense.
My gran used to wear one of those nylony knee length overalls with pockets and long sleeves. I thought it was so naff when I was younger, but I can totally see the point now (i am almost 40)

SecretNutellaFix · 28/06/2011 17:36

I've tried, but I still end up filthy, so no longer bother.

AngryFeet · 28/06/2011 17:55

I have never worn one or even thought about it until now. But suddenly I feel a need for something pinny-like. Maybe this one?

pollyteapot · 28/06/2011 19:58

Oooh, that's a nice pinny. I've takena shine to these ones www.flickr.com/photos/malphi/3765772479/
but nore sure how practical they would be as I am very splashy when cooking

umf · 28/06/2011 20:03

I do. A few years ago some friends were actually quite worried about the habit and chose someone to have a chat with me about it. I explained that DH also wears them and that I see them as practical household items rather than symbols of domestic servitude. Sighs of relief all round.

LemonDifficult · 29/06/2011 16:25

I have a lot of aprons and I am very stylish and Current.
