Time for a new hoover - which one?

We have a Samsung. It is completely crap. The in-pipe and filter block after every time you use it, even if it was only briefly. It sounds louder than a rocket taking off, and the suction is rubbish. The belts keep snapping and every time you pick it up to move it, it leaves a load of dirt behind.

I'd love a dyson, but frankly can't afford a couple of hundred pounds for a hoover.

Is there a good, cheap, reliable alternative?

sebo - german engineering!
dysons don't last

thisisyesterday · 16/05/2011 12:29

no, don't get a dyson. they used to be good, but now they're manufactured in china apparently the quality has gone downhill. our local independent shop said they get more Dyson's back for repair within the firsy year than anything else and he wouldn't recommend one!

we have a Bissel lift-off which is very good. lots of suck, still going strong after 5 years.

My mum has a Miele if you prefer a cylinder vac. It's very, very sucky, very light and really quiet!

WentworthMillerMad · 16/05/2011 16:28

Miele miele miele! I am a member of witch and this brand is the top 5! Yes more expensive but sooooo worth it. I bought one 6 years ago as dyson so crap and it's still sucking like a deamon! Love it!

izzybiz · 16/05/2011 16:31

Henry, mine is 12 years old and has never once been repaired or need any new parts.
Still very strong suction, built to last!

izzybiz · 16/05/2011 16:32

*needed

gregssausageroll · 16/05/2011 16:50

miele here.

CoffeeIsMyFriend · 16/05/2011 16:51

Sebo
Miele
Dyson

In that order.

I have the Dyson Animal and it is bloody heavy, but does the job.

Cutiecat · 16/05/2011 19:50

Hated my dyson and love my miele. Dh thinks i am mad, he has been brainwashed into thinking dson are great. He never even uses the thing!!!! It is all hype.

I have got a miele cat and dog or something, light, great suction, lots of useful bits and no bloody face full of dust when you empty it.

Halbwahrheiten · 16/05/2011 19:53

Thanks for the info. Out of those, Henry is probably the most affordable one. Our Samsung is an upright, which, at least, stores away very well. The problem I can see with a henry or other hoovers like that would be that I don't know where to store it. Confused

Henry!!
I wish I had got mine 10 years ago, He is like a member of the family now!

MayDayChild · 16/05/2011 20:14

Oh get a hetty!! She's far prettier!!

schroeder · 16/05/2011 22:04

I have a nice vax, it sucks like mad Hmm and empties brilliantly even though the canister is pretty small.

spiderlight · 16/05/2011 22:12

I clicked the thread specifically to say 'not a Samsung!' - we bought a Samsung Fido cylinder last September and it is CRAP. It was greatfor about a week, but then the suction started to tail off, however frequently we cleared the filters. The rotating pet-hair brush packed in entirely within about a month and we are now pretty much using the standard head as a sweeping brush to get the hair into a pile to be picked up by hand, so pathetic is the suction. I shall watch this thread with interest. I want to buy a Henry but OH says he used to have one and it was crap.

IhateSunday · 16/05/2011 22:18

another vote for a Hetty.... I got mine for under a £100 a couple of years ago from argos. She's great.

midnightservant · 17/05/2011 11:09

We have two Mieles. One was my MIL's and we got given it in 1994 - don't know how long they had it before then. The other is a Cat and Dog - brilliant at getting up hairs.

I have to get the bags online, but not really a problem.

wildstrawberryplace · 17/05/2011 11:15

I have a Miele Cat and Dog and cylinder AND a Henry. The Miele is by far the better hoover, excellent at picking up hairs and threads, and the carpets look much cleaner afterwards. The Henry is OK though, better than my old Dyson.

The Miele gets used upstairs on the carpets etc, the Henry stays downstairs and does the hard floors and the garage and porch. However, on the occasions that I have brought the Miele down and used the hard floor brush, I am amazed by how much cleaner the floors look.

(Actually I have a Hetty rather than a Henry but they are exactly the same, just Hetty is pink and has eye lashes)

pinkhebe · 17/05/2011 11:18

I love my Henry, we've had it 14 years now, we had to replace the hose because I split it, but that's all.

I can't compare it to any other hoovers, because I've never had another Grin

CandiceMariePratt · 17/05/2011 11:21

I have Hetty, she's lovely

KittyBigglesworth · 18/05/2011 14:14

Miele, far better than Dyson and much quieter.

whodunnit · 18/05/2011 23:41

Definately a miele cat & dog. Had ours for 2.5 years and it still has excellent suction. Bags seem a bit dear at 7 pounds for 5, but they last ( I also live overseas so probably more expensive here).

CointreauVersial · 18/05/2011 23:56

Samsungs are indeed rubbish - ours lasted six weeks; so many things went wrong/dropped off I took it back to the store in disgust.

Ended up with a Hoover - almost as bad. Spent a total of five weeks at the menders in the first year, keeps overheating and cutting out, and is this close to being chucked on the nearest skip.

So much for what not to buy....! I'm torn between getting a Henry and a Miele next, as I've heard both are reliable, and let's face it, that's the most important thing - that the bloomin' thing will work when you want it to.

As I prefer uprights, it will probably be Miele.

houndzrbetter · 20/05/2011 06:49

I love my Hetty!

highlystrung · 20/05/2011 13:18

Miele !!!!!!
