Time for a new hoover - which one?

We have a Samsung. It is completely crap. The in-pipe and filter block after every time you use it, even if it was only briefly. It sounds louder than a rocket taking off, and the suction is rubbish. The belts keep snapping and every time you pick it up to move it, it leaves a load of dirt behind.

I'd love a dyson, but frankly can't afford a couple of hundred pounds for a hoover.

Is there a good, cheap, reliable alternative?

SEBO- definitely!

0131trojan1 · 21/05/2011 07:56

SEBO, SEBO, SEBO - definitely!

follyfoot · 21/05/2011 08:01

Our local independent electrical shop chap says just buy a Sebo. Nothing else.

I have an Argos Value hoover, was chepaest upright and I'm really pleased with it. It has good suction, allergen filter and is light enough for my 5 yr old DS to carry it upstairs if I need (with me behind him, don't panic!). Have had it a year and no problems at all.

NorksAreMessy · 21/05/2011 08:03

I do a lot of craft and Henry is the only thing not to have a fit when asked to pick up threads, broken beads, lengths of wire, etc.
My son also has a game where he throws a tissue into the air and schloops it with the Henry hose. It copes
Dyson is overpriced tat...and I am ashamed to say it took me three broken Dysons to realise that

Spagbolagain · 21/05/2011 08:13

Have had my Sebo for about 10 yrs and it's still brilliant, really powerful, no problems with it at all.

ditavonteesed · 21/05/2011 08:17

glad to see so many votes for henry as I have just ordered a george , need a carpet shampooer he doubles up as a henry when you change his insides apparently.

cabbageroses · 21/05/2011 10:51

Sebo- but it doesn't do edges of skirtings very well.

Misread your thread title as 'Time for a new lover - which one?'

Was all ready to weigh in with helpful advice.

Ah well.

Love my Miele - never thought I'd have any feeling whatsoever for a hoover but I love my Miele. It's not the cat and dog one although I do have a dog and it picks up everything so easily.

vanillamum · 22/05/2011 20:46

I think you should go for a Miele because like you I only like uprights. I use a Henry at work in an old people's home and it is good, sucks up everything, never breaks down BUT because it is not an upright you have to drag it around then it gets caught and topples over, and is just big and heavy. If you can afford it (I couldn't but got one anyway and loove it) have you considered a Roomba? It isn't very powerful but we use ours once or twice a day and always have beautifully clean carpets.

CointreauVersial · 23/05/2011 17:27

NanaB - just looked at your website, clicked on "upright" and got a list of 650-odd bags and spares, with no facility to actually filter down further to see.....vacuum cleaners.

I'm afraid I gave up. Good luck with it, but you need to sort out the filters!

greenclean · 23/05/2011 19:13

miele are fantastic. great little machine that so many more benefits then just great suction. first it can be turned down so if you've got someone on the phone, busy, or perhaps get kicks out of vacuuming in the middle of the night you can vacuum without disturbing anyone. second it's got on board storage which is hidden. I've seen some dysons do but the items fall off. With the miele they're always with you so you can quickly deal with a corner rather then stop the machine, go find the tool attach, vacuum, take off, go put it away etc. it's also go auto rewind cable which is always great. the metal hose goes into itself so takes up little room. it can be used up right and fits perfectly on a step so you can easily vacuum the stairs which i find is usually the hardest. well worth getting one

whodunnit · 23/05/2011 21:31

ooh, perish the thought with the tissue game, Norksaremessy! My Miele brochure says watch out for sucking eyeballs out as the suction is quite strong. I go into mild palpitations if I lift the hose more than 2 inches off the floor. But I love it anyway. (maybe the eyeball warning was not quite so graphic inthe brochure but it put the willies up me... but then I am H&S mum!)

greenclean · 23/05/2011 21:41

i don't think you have to be a health and safety mum to worry about getting your eye ball sucked out by the vacuum. never considered it but got me concerned now! might start giving everyone goggles just in case

whodunnit · 23/05/2011 22:04

Send me a pair as well, greenclean!!!

And I wasn't really joking - I am a H&S officer!

Beamur · 23/05/2011 22:08

You can get cheap bags for Miele - go to your local market and get a generic (non brand) one to fit. Works just as well, they usually come with replacement filters too.

sonearsofar · 24/05/2011 07:27

I love my Sebo - and if you ring the helpline it's in the UK and they're really helpful.
Had a Miele cat and dog previously but the plastic catches broke quite quickly and that was that
