Using the dishwasher for cleaning other things???

Cutiecat · 14/05/2011 10:55

a friend recently told me she often did a load in the dishwasher of things like; the plastic step from in the bathroom, plastic toys and crocs. She then runs the machine empty hot with bleach. What do you think? Does anyone else do this?

I do.

I clean my basin from the sink - bottom basket, hot wash, it comes up lovely.

As do crocs I am led to believe

I use it for tons of stuff - just if it's something manky I don't put dishes in with it.

I never use bleach btw, just dishwasher tab.

I heard someone the other day saying they put their dishcloth in there every day. I'd be worried about it falling down & clogging the drain.

Have also heard about someone cooking in it - piece of fish, wrapped up well in foil!

Ideas for 'dishwaher dinner-party' welcome!

ninedragons · 14/05/2011 11:03

I do - I chuck things like the sink plugs, dish brushes, bath toys, anything waterproof really.

WorzselMaamage · 14/05/2011 11:03

mooncup, highchair ( antilop) dichcloths and sponges.

I have been known to put the potty in it with the dustpan and brush too.

ChuckYouFarlie · 14/05/2011 11:11

I put the metal hob racks that sit on top of the hob burners through the dishwasher, works a treat and has eliminated one of my most-hated housework jobs. Have done the oven trays too.

Figgyroll · 14/05/2011 14:27

Someone I know puts her two loo brushes (on their own) in her dishwasher once a month on the 70 degree cycle. Shock Shock but no-one's died yet.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 14/05/2011 14:31

Those foam jigsaw mats

Anifrangapani · 14/05/2011 14:33

Bike bits
kids toys
stove rings
oven racks
washing up brushes
nail brushes
toothbrushes

Anything that needs cleaning & will survive really.

ChunkyPickle · 14/05/2011 14:38

We put the washing up sponge through

I hadn't thought of the jigsaw mats (I'd envisioned me sat in the shower scrubbing at them, but that's a much better idea

mousymouse · 14/05/2011 14:50

Bath toys
Washing up brush
Bin lids
I don't do an empty wash afterwards.

Furball · 14/05/2011 15:07

I put my cloths in every day on the very top rack. - they're fine up there. Really good way of stopping them getting smelly etc.

also put in bin lids, compost caddy, fridge shelves and drawers, oven shelves and base,

I would draw the line at toilet brushes though - that does sound grim. (disclaimer even though I don't actually own one)

ShatnersBassoon · 14/05/2011 15:13

I put a seagull's skull in once.

ChuckYouFarlie · 14/05/2011 15:35

Anifrangipani - stove rings! That's the word I was looking for and couldn't for the life of me remember it... I ended up writing "metal hob racks". Twat.

WereOffToSeeTheWizard · 14/05/2011 15:39

metal hob rack wondered what the freak you were on about !

MoreBeta · 14/05/2011 15:47

Yes all of the above, toys, stove rings, racks, dustpan/brush, shower mat a few times, toilet brushes always go in before we leave a rental property.

Its just a machine for washing things in after all. Like your clothes washing machine.

Never cooked anything in it but I bet it woudl do a really nice steamed fish in a grip lock plastic bag. Potatoes would be good but other veg might only need a quick hot rinse. Grin

DonaAna · 14/05/2011 15:53

I thought the weirdest thing is to use the diswasher to make homemade flavored vodka, but washing seagull skulls is weirder still Grin

ShatnersBassoon · 14/05/2011 15:56

It went in with a load of other 'beach treasure'. I was frightened of the children getting avian flu from the invisible rotten seagull scalp residue.

Cutiecat · 14/05/2011 17:54

Wow. I never knew. The seagull skull is definately the winner. I don't think I would put in the loo brush but am tempted to put in loads of things from the bathroom now like the toothbrush pots and the soap dish.

I do put the sponge and washing up brush in a couple of times a week with the normal load.

As for bath anti slip mats and the like I tend to bung them in the washing machine.

Thanks for all your comments.

I put the washing powder draw from the washing machine in from time to time, gets rid of the mouldy stuff that accumulates underneath.

GotArt · 15/05/2011 05:24

I do too... plastic toys, feeding chair, DD's rubber boots and Holey's.

heartsnflowers · 15/05/2011 06:21

Dishracks-metal and plastic---Lego

mathanxiety · 15/05/2011 06:40

I use the heated dry setting for raising some yeast doughs. Very intrigued by the possibility of homemade dishwasher vodka..

MrsSnaplegs · 15/05/2011 07:06

My dh has recently asked if he could put some engine bits in for the car he's restoring! He got told to use the sink Grin

hwhite6 · 15/05/2011 08:01

MrsSnaplegs, tell your OH, as long as the bits aren't aluminium the dishwasher would be fine. To clean up the ally bits, boil them up with some rhubarb, works a treat!

cambridgeferret · 15/05/2011 08:38

My machine handbook says no dishcloths due to fire risk - never plucked up the nerve to try it.

Wasn't there an episode of Kim & Aggie where the woman washed stirrups? With the regular wash? Nice load of horse manure over everything.
