Please help before I cry... cleaning quartz worktops?

Our new kitchen was fitted on Friday and I want to cry already. We ahve gone for quartz worktops and I cannot get them to look clean. They show every water mark, drip and smear and wiping them down with a cloth after washing up made them go all smeary. They cost so much money and already they are the bane of my life after 2 days. I want to cry.

How can i clean them without them going all smeary and showing the marks? What do you use to clean yours- what type of cleaner and what cloth? Some cleaner came with it- Apollo Stoneguard? But that was just as bad. Please help!

I have Silestone tops (quartz composite) and Silestone recommend Cif to clean.

I use Method lavender spray for a daily wipe-around and Cif followed by using a microfibre cloth to dry for a once-a week shine. The Cif is very mildly abrasive.

JWIM · 28/03/2014 18:55

Shiny black granite here and exceptionally hard water - another vote for a micro fibre cloth to buff dry after a wipe over with a damp cloth.

Henny2696 · 15/04/2014 08:23

I did loads of research (inc Mumsnet) before buying new kitchen. In the end we opted for white,, marble lookalike, quartz, which I love. It is solid, stone, no MDF. I had a mild panic in the first week after finding tea mug ring stains, but Cif removed them instantly. For general maintenance, I do a quick wipe round with hot dishcloth, them, v quick second wipe round with microfibre cloth. It's a slight faff, but worth it to keep it looking fab. Hope this helps others with their research!

Oh also... Quartz fitters said that, every now and then, wipe it down with Methylated spirit to remove grease buildup etc. I haven't don't it yet, but thought I'd just share the tip.

Hitmonlee · 16/04/2014 13:25

My fitters recommended baby shampoo. I clean the crumbs etc with a damp cloth and the apply baby shampoo with a dry cloth ( I use kitchen towel) and the polish with a microfibre polishing cloth. It takes about 5 mins and looks really shiny.

I have black granite and use a microfiber cloth, fairy liquid and dry/polish with kitchen paper.

Alwayscheerful · 17/04/2014 13:08

Glass cleaner and kitchen roll.

Granite n quartz is my trade, warm soapy water then dry clothed down should be enough if there is something like limescale around the tap or sink area a glass scraper can be used as long as the blade is flat against the surface a new blade preferably aswell and slow and little pressure scrape anything off

mistermarble · 28/07/2014 16:20

Hi, i have owned a large granite and quartz worktop factory alongside my husband for the last 10 years. Quartz is a madmade product made in a similar way to concrete then polished on the surface to the desired level. The material should not stain if it has been correctly manufactured as it is pressed and vibrated to a high density level stopping liquids penetrating the surface. If the material does stain then this should be on the surface and easily removeable with small amounts of soap and water. If the stain has penetrated the surface then the material hasnt been manufactured correctly and is of low density. Surface stains show up more on the darker colours but its worth remembering that if you use excessive amounts of soap to remove them you are likely to be left with a soapy film afterwards which requires lots of water to remove. Quartz will not polish to the same level as granite so it will always look duller in the darker colours which can give a less clean look . All the micro cloths in the world will not improve the sheen of the material, too much soap will dull the surface, and only poor grade material absorbs stains into the surface. If you need help with any surfaces try mistermarble in manchester and London.

The best product to clean and remove marks from your quartz worktops is Unika Granite and Quartz worktops cleaner. You can get it from Amazon. It's brilliant. Took all my water marks off first go. I just use it with kitchen towel.

Icelollycraving · 17/08/2014 18:29

nic does it remove the water marks that happen so easily? I use method which is ok but need something to remove the built up marks. I was recommended to use steel wool but I'm too cautious!

CointreauVersial · 17/08/2014 18:33

Black granite here - clean with a damp cloth and kitchen spray, but buff dry with a tea towel or kitchen roll.

It doesn't take long, but failure to dry leaves streaks.

dibdobs · 18/08/2014 22:26

Lakelands worktop wonder is fab £9.99 for a large spray can and buff with a microfibre cloth, i use it in one of the houses i clean couldnt believe what a difference it makes

Granitemaster · 24/09/2014 20:43

What quarry yo own lol lol? If you did then you wouldn't be selling granite and Quartz in uk. Quartz does stain you must wipe the tea stains etc off don't leave overnight. Do not put hot pans on Quartz either.

You need this Flash Special Surfaces Spray.

You used to be able to get it in all the supermarkets but can only get it in Waitrose now. I buy a good few bottles at a time because I'm sure it's going to be discontinued.

CleanLinesSharpEdges · 30/01/2015 13:25

Fuuuuukkk!! Fucking zombie thread! Angry

icelollycraving · 02/02/2015 20:33

Do you work for them too, what with it being your first post!

melomal · 02/03/2015 13:13

It seems that you are all experimenting with the cleaning of your quartz worktops??
Its quite simple really! Firstly, if your worktops were fitted by professionals you will have had a polish/sealer applied that isolates the worktop material from anything you could spill on it. This will make cleaning much quicker and easier. However, even if this wasn't applied (unfortunately some companies don't to increase their profit!) simply using a glass cleaner and microfibre cloth is more than sufficient and will not leave smears. If you use bar keepers friend or any other abrasive you will have to continue using them as they will leave micro scuffs that grip any stains or spillage. these abrasives should only be used if you have dark marks left by aluminium pans etc. after which you should use a quartz finishing polish/sealer to isolate the quartz again. Burnt on material can be scraped off carefully with a new stanley bade and refinished with polish/sealer after cleaning.

I hope this clears things up for you all, you shouldn't have any problems cleaning your worktops. They should be a pleasure to own! If you need any further help with any type of worksurface please call me 07590 112166 or visit our website at worktops.co.

melomal · 02/03/2015 13:22

Read your post Aworryingtrend. Sounds very sad, there are two possibilities firstly if your worktops feel waxy there is probably some sealer residue left on them or the installer used the wrong sealer. If this is the case you need to remove it first. So find out what was used and how to remove it from your installer.
If they feel smooth then follow the cleaning method in my last post. You shouldnt have any problems!

I have mirror black quartz worktops and have discovered that a diluted solution of roughly equal parts of white distilled vinegar and water is very effective at removing limescale. Just a quick rub of the vinegar solution, then rinse with copious amounts of water. I did not allow the solution to sit around. I would recommed trying on a small area first but there has been no adverse affects on my worktop. The limescale was gone in an instant. Just buff up with a microfibre cloth and no worry about chemicals on a surface where you are preparing food.

TeaAndCake · 28/06/2015 12:02

Black granite here. Wasted spent 10 quid on the Lakeland granite spray after reading all their reviews and it just made smeary marks. Now use Method granite cleaner and get perfect results every time. Smells lovely too.
