Is it just me or do you have a hierarchy of mugs?

BellaBearisWideAwake · 21/03/2011 13:44

And is it something you share or do you seethe when someone helps themselves to the wrong tier?

eg mugs you don't mid being taken outside/mugs for builders

mugs just for real coffee

mugs only YOU can use

or is it just me?

Ah yes, stealth, my ds also has a plastic cup hierarchy. Lifeboat ones get used first, followed by ones with sea creatures on....

FreakoidOrganisoid · 21/03/2011 16:22

I don't have a hierarchy anymore because I let exH keep all the shit mugs but I do have certain ones I use

Massive mug for morning cup of tea
Jamie Oliver mug for tea at other times or for coffee.
Delicate china mug for herbal teas
Big mugs for guests who I know like a lot of tea
Normal sized mugs for other guests.

Could do with a few more actually.

craftynclothy · 21/03/2011 16:31

Oh yes. We have:

Posh tea set cups and saucers that never get used. They're for those special occasions that never actually happen Confused

Coffee mugs for when we have guests and everyone is having coffee.

Little coffee mugs for strong coffee when we have guests and there aren't enough of the other ones.

Standard mugs that match our dinner set. We use these most of the time.

2 mugs that we got for Xmas (meh!) that we use when we run out of the standard ones.

Some mugs in a random cupboard for builders and when we're doing diy.

...but I've asked for a special me mug for my birthday. 3 days to go Grin[saddo]

Timbachick · 21/03/2011 16:33

I have serious mug hierarchy and inwardly seethe and fume if the wrong one gets used.

DH has just broken one so I have had to re-evaluate the hierarchy ... not as simple as them all getting bumped up one. Grin

Am also in the process of weeding out old mugs and getting new ones so a whole new re-ordering will be necessary. Grin

craftynclothy · 21/03/2011 16:34

Oh and reading the thread I've realised I have forgotten the kids mugs that sit unused in the back of the cupboard until we get a random "I want a monkey cup" tantrum and the mixing mug

GothAnneGeddes · 21/03/2011 16:36

I am enjoying all these links to lovely mugs. I am pondering splashing out on a Le Creuset mug, but I would need to check if if was big enough. I generally drink a vat sized amount of fennel tea in my mug.

stealthsquiggle · 21/03/2011 16:47

"Made from the famous Le Creuset stoneware which makes it oven, microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe as well as restistant to staining, chipping and cracking"

[sceptical]

our "famous Le Creuset stoneware" ramekins chipped and cracked within weeks. I think I will not be investing unless they make a cast iron one.

GothAnneGeddes · 21/03/2011 16:48
Shock

Did you get your money back?

stealthsquiggle · 21/03/2011 16:49

they were a gift, so no proof of purchase, so no... sadly not.

NO!

Because we only have 6 mugs in total. Two for us and 4 for guests.

That's it!

Get rid of all your shite mugs, get a good set, and stick with it.

BadPoet · 21/03/2011 16:57

Yes, definitely. And they live on different shelves.

LillianGish · 21/03/2011 16:59

Brilliant thread! I had never really thought about it before, but yes definitely. In fact this is making me wonder why I don't get rid of all sub-standard mugs as it would be perfectly possible to get cheap, but acceptable replacements for use by those lower down the mug hierarchy! DH has a favourite mug which he has had since university and which I absolutely hate (sort of dingy grey/brown Denby) - I am longing for it to get broken, but it seems to be indestructible!

StealthPolarBear · 21/03/2011 17:03

how did I forget the hot chocolate/horlicks mugs? Any milky drink, basically go in thick, matching red and green mugs (were nescafe freebies). DH has green (because he used to have the hot choc with mint) and I have red.
And I also have lemsip mugs!

GwendolineMaryLacey · 21/03/2011 17:04

6 mugs??? Only six mugs?? How do you survive? Shock

Wink
transferbalance · 21/03/2011 17:07

are those le creuset ones a big mug of tea? I need a big breakfast mug

stealthsquiggle · 21/03/2011 17:10

Those with lemsip mugs - could you describe your lemsip mug? For me, lemsip needs to go in a thin (bone china) mug, wheras hot chocolate needs a thick, chunky mug.

StealthPolarBear · 21/03/2011 17:17

yes, pretty much stealth

MmeLindt · 21/03/2011 17:19

Oh, yes. I have Orla Kiely and Koloni for guests.

These two are MINE all [[

And no one is allowed to use them.

MmeLindt · 21/03/2011 17:20

second link didn't work

StealthPolarBear · 21/03/2011 17:22

my lemsip mug

NormanTheForeman · 21/03/2011 17:23

Six mugs would never be enough for us! We frequently have more than 6 people in the house at once, all requiring a hot drink.

MmeLindt · 21/03/2011 17:24

Am tempted by the Le Creuset mugs.

HumphreysCorner · 21/03/2011 17:27

I am SO pleased I am not the only one with a mug type obsession. DH thinks I am completely batty!

AdelaofBlois · 21/03/2011 17:29

I not only have a hierarchy, but even segregated spaces for them-mugs that match the other china in one place, one for each member of the family hanging on a specially put-up shelf above the sink, and the others in a cupboard.

I live in fear that one day I may come downstairs and find they have seen through the 'more equal than others' thing, staged a revolution, and that the shelf ones are shattered on the floor and the others jumbled up in some sort of crazy free-for-all.

But, if they do, there will be promotions, and mug equality will collapse again.
