eg mugs you don't mid being taken outside/mugs for builders

mugs just for real coffee

Yes Grin

I have my lovely Sophie Conran/Portmerion ones which are my favourites, some old coffee cups which I inherited from my Grandma which must only be used for coffee (real coffee) on pain of death.
Then a selection of various mismatched ones, and then the plain white cheapo ones which get given to builders or DH takes outside with him when he's washing the cars or something.
Have some which are just for having hot chocolate in for weekend breakfast too, and a pair which are for lattes.

I also have a mug at my parent's house which is just mine and is used by no-one but me. My Mum brings me tea in it in the mornings when I'm staying there. Blush

MooMooFarm · 21/03/2011 14:16

Absolutely!

And I'm sure when my mum visits and offers to make tea, she uses the wrong ones on purpose Angry

BellaBearisWideAwake · 21/03/2011 14:17

FORGOT about the espresso cups with saucers! My venn diagram needs a new circle!

naturalbaby · 21/03/2011 14:17

our builders mugs have disappeared so i need to find some new ones. everything else has sentimental value but we have so many it seems mad to buy more!
my mug is a chunky, shiny marvin the martian one from when i was a teenager. might have to get myself a nice girly one now i'm the proud owner of 3 boys (and a husband).
i also had a breakfast bowl - a cornflakes one that i collected tokens for but it broke a while ago : (

MrsKarwash · 21/03/2011 14:18

Bella are you relieved now that it isn't just you?

freshmint · 21/03/2011 14:20

no.
I have around 20 different bridgewater birds ones
we all use all of them, including builders and random tradesmen and have done for about 10 years.

c'est tout

FanellaFox · 21/03/2011 14:20

Yep:

There is My Mug

DH's huge mug

John Lewis Mugs for guests

White small mugs for filter coffee

KitKat etc mugs for builders

I need more mugs... I feel I don't have enough in each catergory. I might then even arrange them on corresponding shelves...

WuzzAndBuddy · 21/03/2011 14:22

I have 6 Cath Kidston mugs, my favourite is the cowboy one, 2nd favourite is the cars one. When people come round they get the flowery ones and DH and I have the cowboy and cars one, love the look on mens faces when they get the 'girls' mug Grin

My friend made the brews one day and he knows which ones are 'mine' and he used the cowboy one for himself and gave me my least favourite flowery one... the bloody cheek... was not impressed. lol
(I sound like a right nutter!)

But, when my mum comes to stay she uses the horrid mismatched rubbish mugs at the back of the cupboard, I get offended every time... Hmm

peskykitty · 21/03/2011 14:25

For me, it's all about the varying degrees of 'mug thickness'.

Has to be lovely and thick for me to enjoy my coffee.

Makes it more comforting.

bucaneve · 21/03/2011 14:25

I do I do!
I have a cute mouse mug for everyday
A 'save the world' mug for when the cute mouse mug is dirty and I can't be bothered to wash it
A keep 'Keep calm and carry on' for exams and essays

ZeroMinusZero · 21/03/2011 14:26

We have two beautiful purple elephant mugs which anyone can use but I would have a quite serious breakdown if anything should happen to them. They are my babies (aside from my actual baby, who is almost as precious to me)

GothAnneGeddes · 21/03/2011 14:29

I have my mug, mug for my parents/friends, mugs for guests, and a lemsip mug.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/03/2011 14:29

I find that Easter is a great time to gain Builders mugs.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 21/03/2011 14:30

I have 'my' Mugs, other people don't use them, there is about 3 of them.

I have mugs for professional guests (ds's nurses ect)
I have mugs for friends and family (a higgledy pigeldy amount of mugs)

I have cheap and cheerful mugs for kids that I don't mind getting broken. (also gets used for builders)

BellaBearisWideAwake · 21/03/2011 14:30

lemsip mug! genius!

I love everyone on this thread - we are all nutcases, one and all.

When I was a child, my gran had a neighbour (who we all had to call Uncle Ron) who was a bit of an old soak, and who looked like old man Steptoe (inclduing the terrible dentistry). She had a sky blue mug which was ONLY ever used for Uncle Ron, and was even stored in a special cupboard next to the fireplace, which was kept for mugs which had strange and terrible purposes (such as were used to store turpentined brushes in, or used to pick up dead mice the cats bought in).

Poor old stigmatised Uncle Ron.

DirtyMartini · 21/03/2011 14:34

My best ones are the Moomin ones by Arabia, which I have six of (have been getting them for birthdays from my mum for a good few years). But they're little, and we mainly use them for "last thing at night" cups of tea.

Morning ones are for me, a set of vintage Buchan of Portobello ones from eBay (Sixties stoneware) and for DP, usually a Dundee United one or the Penguin books one that says "The Big Sleep", which DS gave him for his first Father's Day.

brillopads · 21/03/2011 14:34

Hehe, we moved house in December & my mum & dad helped to make the new place presentable. They bought round tea-making supplies including 6 mugs from Wilko's with various festive designs on them. They have been on the "to do" list to slowly replace them all ever since with ones that are much more aesthetically pleasing.

GetOrfMoiLand · 21/03/2011 14:35

I hate it when people buy me mugs. It is like they are trying to dictate what my mugs should be.

My mother smuggled a ghastly mug tree into my house once - under the guise of 'dd got you this for mother's day'. She must have gone into to shop and ask for the most disgusting thing they sold, they were stacking mugs in rainbow stripes with cats on. They were from the Rod, Jane and Freddy school of interior design.

as dd had 'chosen' them I had to use them for ages in order not to hurt her feelings. Reprieve came when two of the mugs were smashed in a house move

BellaBearisWideAwake · 21/03/2011 14:35

oooooh oooh! just thought of another category:

mugs that are the right size for measuring cooking ingredients!!!

OP posts:
BellaBearisWideAwake · 21/03/2011 14:36

GetOrfMoiLand

absolutely. don't buy me mugs. unless they are these but then you must ask which design I like

OP posts:
ChippingInMistressSteamMop · 21/03/2011 14:37

Of course there's hiarachy of mugs - how would a home function without it.

I get quite twitchy if someone makes tea and uses one of my mugs Hmm

I have 'my' mug at several family & friends houses too Grin

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 21/03/2011 14:38

Ooh Bella - yes I have a particular mug I use to measure just the right amount of rice for me, DH and DS.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 21/03/2011 14:39

I have a mug for porridge oats if it is just for me and DH and a different one if DS is having some also.

OP posts:
namechangeahoy · 21/03/2011 14:39

Yes! I have my lovely Le Creuset mug and a reserve one. DP has a vulgar one and a reserve one. I have nice big white porcelain ones for visitors. And a selection of cheap crappy ones for miscellaneous purposes. We also have three other crockery sets kept "for best" Hmm. I know.
