Votes please - should we keep our new memory mattress ?

I loved our old sprung mattress, super deep and comfy until it started sagging after only 6 years ( DH reckons it is because it has seen a lot of action sorry if TMI Blush)

So anyhow we tried loads of mattresses and DH was really taken with the Tempur memory foam one. I was less so primarily because of the £££ but we definitely needed a new mattress and we got it from Dreams so they have a 40 night exchange policy so thought we would give it a go.

We have had it for 4 nights now. I think its ok, seem to sleep well on it, but its not comfy to roll into and a bit uncomfortable to sit up and read, DH is ok with it but he thought he would love it.

Not sure if we could be bothered going through all the hassle of getting it exchanged, so wondering if we will grow to love it, also will it sag after a couple of years?

Sorry if good housekeeping isn't the right area for this, its not a section I frequent often

It will sag after a few years. Give it another four days and then if you aren't happy send it back. Personally I think sprung mattresses still have the edge providing you get one that is the right firmness for you.

Sounds like you may do better with a split mattress which is more firm on your DHs side?

rookiemater · 24/02/2011 21:23

Thanks whomoved, I'm quite happy with a firm mattress ( BIL brings a mattress topper when he comes to stay as my old double mattress is in the spare room and he finds it too hard) Its the sagging I am concerned about , it cost a lot of money and this time I want something that will last the recommended 10 years and I think we could get a really good sprung one for the same price.

I have no experience of memory foam mattresses so can't advise but we have a mattress from here which has lasted for years. Very comfy too and no sagging!

rookiemater · 24/02/2011 21:35

Oh good in theory we can replace it so I will check if they have any Sealy ones, I think they do. Anyone out there with a Tempur mattress who rates it?

barmbrack · 24/02/2011 21:40

We have a Tempur matress and i luuuuurve it. We got it because we slept so well on the one in the guest room at my mum's house. DH has a bad back and I have arthritis so we are old crocks and it seems to suit us really well and we get a really good night's sleep. Only slight downside is that in summer it can be a bit hot, and also it is too hot for me if I use my electric blanket on it. Can get a bit sweaty. Also less bouncy if you are up to , well, you know. You have to work a bit harder.

megglevache · 24/02/2011 21:43

Oh what a huge regret buying ours- never had such a bad back until I bought one and will be glad to ditch it ASAP as soon as I have some cash to replace it.

rookiemater · 24/02/2011 21:52

Arrgh its the marmite of the mattress world. Good to know that you love it barmbrack, although there is that caveat about the summer which I have read about and worries me slightly as I don't like being too hot in bed ( although its not often a problem in Scotland). Purely for the purposes of scientfic research, we have, ahem, tested the bed, even with the mattress protector I find it kind of odd that Dreams offer an exchange policy which makes me suspicious about how it will work. It was indeed less bouncy but not as sinky as we had worried about.

Megglevache, was yours a Tempur? I think I am getting some back twinges but it could just be hypochondria caused by my new running routine.

megglevache · 24/02/2011 21:56

Yes Rookie, I have arthritis in my spine too and I'm just so fed up with feeling like shit every morning I sleep on the sofa just to get a break. I have heard great things about the Sealys.

I have to sleep on my Tempur with several pillows under the top half of my back! Never again and I'd not recommend one either.

I'm going to put it in ds's room as he's light enough and his matress if so lumpy it'd be better for him.

AliceWorld · 24/02/2011 21:59

I had to get rid of my memory foam mattress after not very long as it was boiling me alive. After a night crying on the sofa as I couldn't cool down and was so incredibly frustrated I bought a new one. And I am not usually a warm person.

rookiemater · 24/02/2011 22:02

So sorry for you megglevache what a shame. Ok pretty much decided we will get a replacement, now to figure out how to make that happen as I have a sneaking suspicion that Dreams will not make it easy, but am very grateful that we have the option

Mine is pocket sprung with memory foam on top. It is brilliant. I haven't had it very long, but I would be surprised if it didn't take quite a while to get saggy.

Ormirian · 24/02/2011 22:05

We have one and my back is even worse than it was before

megglevache · 24/02/2011 22:08

Rookie a relative of mine is currently having a dispute with Dreams , the technicians have been out and all saying nothing is wrong with the bed (it is faulty) She paid £3,500 for it and is now taking Dreams to court! Shock

I hope they are helpful.

This thread has made me dread going back up to bed tonight!

rookiemater · 24/02/2011 22:11

Darn that DH of mine. He is always beguiled by anything expensive and thinks it must be good. We were going to get two single mattresses as I just wasn't that impressed with the Tempur, now ironically out of the two of us I'm the one who thinks its just about tolerable.
Oh well must gird loins for exchange discussion with Dreams, hopefully it will be like Ryanair and it will be ok provided we follow everything to the letter.

gracehedley · 24/02/2011 23:00

We have Tempur, and I would say it took me quite a few weeks to get used to it and like it. No sagging 6 years later.

barmbrack · 25/02/2011 05:17

(also, for others reading this thread who might be tempted to get a memory foam mattress, we got ours on amazon for £150 for a kingsize- 80% off!!) We definitely wouldn't have spent full price on one.

fromheretomaternity · 25/02/2011 05:26

We got a tempur mattress. Hated it - felt too firm and I was waking up with more aches and pains than our old bed. Dh who has bad back problem didn't like it either.

We returned it to tempur then bought a sprung mattress from dreams. That was no good either so we returned it and then got a silentnight one which we really like. Dreams gave the exchange without any quibbles but nb you get no money back if you choose a cheaper one, and you can't exchange again so choose carefully...

Plumm · 25/02/2011 07:06

Dislike mine - we're getting a bigger bed soon and will be going back to a hard sprung mattress. And we've had ours for less than a year and one side of it seems to have collapsed - there's no support on the edge - but that's beside the point, I'd dislike it whether that had happened or not.

Plumm · 25/02/2011 07:07

Does anyone know what I should be looking for when buying a sprung mattress? I laid on some lovely ones in Dreams, but they cost over £1000 (super king), but I'm scared of buying off the internet in case they're not right.

VivaLeBeaver · 25/02/2011 07:15

Plumm- can't you find one you like in the shop and then make a note of the model and see if you can find it cheaper online? I know its a bit naughty but thats what we did when we got our Sealy mattress.

Ours is a memory foam and it took me a few weeks to get used to it. DH still doesn't like it, says its too firm. I love it.

Plumm · 25/02/2011 07:18

No, I can't find it cheaper elsewhere. I was hoping to find the same type (ie number of springs) but I'm not sure what to look for.

VivaLeBeaver · 25/02/2011 07:42

I'd never buy a mattress without trying it first, not unless there's a money back guarantee if you don't like it.

thebonkers · 25/02/2011 07:59

If you can get to one try John Lewis they are hugely knowledgable and have ones for all budgets so you can try lots and then shop else where if you wish. With a sprung mattress you will get what you pay for.......

Ladies, pls consider trying these above guys out. (hope link works as haven't done this before) we bought a king sized mattress from them last year and it still feels as firm as the day it was delivered! Fairly priced also IMO compared to all the memory foam out there and it's a dream to sleep on, honestly!

rookiemater · 25/02/2011 14:00

Good to know that you were able to exchange your mattress from Dreams with no problems fromheretomaternity, fingers crossed we will be the same
