Our Dyson is about to shuffle off this mortal coil - do I replace with the same or is there something better out there?

The dyson is finally threatening to conk out for good after many repairs (mind you, it is about 400 years old!)

Can anyone recommend something better or should we just replace with another dyson?

Miele. Dysons are rubbish in comparison. I have had my Miele for 15 years without a single repair or problem. I love it.

MadreInglese · 23/02/2011 12:53

Are they much pricier Suncottage?

Is your Dyson an upright or a cylinder? Lots of people on here recommend either Miele or Henrys for a cylinder cleaner, but I haven't seen anything else better if you prefer an upright (which I do, as any cylinder vacuum cleaner always kills my back).

Suncottage · 23/02/2011 12:57

Probably cheaper. I was shocked when I used my friend's Dyson at how little suction it had. My Miele can pick up a brick Smile.

I am convinced that a Dyson is purely psychogical because you can see the dirt. I have also been told by professional cleaners that a Henry the Hoover is their vacuum of choice because it is virtually unbreakable.

MadreInglese · 23/02/2011 13:03

It's an upright

Will have a nosey at Mieles and Henrys

Have just had a Google at Miele. It appears they do do uprights. May consider one if my Dyson ever gives up the ghost, as they seem to be well recommended on here. But I would say my Dyson is far better than the Panasonic and Electroluxs I have had before.

Grockle · 23/02/2011 13:18

I replaced mine with a Miele (one that you pull along) based on Which? reports. I LOVE it!

Dyson are not as good as they used to be.

messylittlemonkey · 23/02/2011 13:24

You can't beat a Henry (Numatic) in my opinion. :)

mellie64 · 23/02/2011 13:36

i have a miele its fab and i reuse the bags over and over. i have been tempted with other makes but they have never been as good and end up in the loft, my miele is 8 years+ old and gets used alot we have a big house and four children and DH is a builder (it even has been to work with him) its still works fine.
i use a dyson when i tidy up after the toddler group i run and its good but not as good as the miele.

DrNortherner · 23/02/2011 14:15

I had the same dilemma last year and plumped for another Dyson, which I love. But I was VERY tempted to get a HENRY, great reviews, and they last forever and used by builders to suck up rubble and all sorts plus much cheaper.

Gotabookaboutit · 23/02/2011 14:34

Henry - cheep and virtually indestructible - I have been through 3 dysons!

Fiddledee · 23/02/2011 17:28

Mellie64 - do you have an upright one? How to you re-use the bags and not get dust everywhere?

earwicga · 23/02/2011 17:31

Anything but a bastard dyson.

RachelHRD · 24/02/2011 16:17

Another Miele fan here - much better than Dyson, We have this one and it's great. You can bulk buy bags and filters online pretty cheaply too.

Carrotsandcelery · 24/02/2011 16:21

I had a Dyson (only just over a year old) and found it so rubbish I had to replace it. I have replaced it with a Sebo x4 (pet). It is absolutely fantastic. The carpet changed colour before my eye - quite honestly it did. I have had it for about 7 weeks and have not had to change the bag yet, nor have I lost any suction. We have a dog who sheds a lot so it is a challenge to hoover our house and this one does the job beautifully.

CMOTdibbler · 24/02/2011 16:23

Miele - I am a total convert

mosschops30 · 24/02/2011 16:24

We have just replaced our prehistoric dyon this weekend.

I couldn't justify getting anything else, even the fax rep in the shop said he has a dyson at home because they are the best.

You get 25% off at comet if you trade in your old hoover.

We bought an upright animal and it's fab, noticed a difference from our old dyson

mosschops30 · 24/02/2011 16:25

Vax

wildstrawberryplace · 24/02/2011 16:28

Had dysons, now got Miele Cat and Dog Cylinder, and a Henry for downstairs (for garage, shed, toddler food in kitchen etc). The Miele is the dogs bollocks. The Henry is indestructible but whenever I use it it compares unfavourably with the Miele. Sometimes I use the Miele downstairs on the hard floors and it looks "wow" clean rather than just "no visible crumbs" clean.

wildstrawberryplace · 24/02/2011 16:31

btw the Miele cylinder is completely adjustable and no problem for my bad back

NinjaChipmunk · 24/02/2011 16:41

i didn't think it was possible to love a hoover till i bought this. I used to have a dyson and really they are massivley overpriced. This thing is amazing, it can actually almost lift my carpets on the highest setting and my lounge rug is actually they colour it was when I first bought it again. Totally recommend it.

mellie64 · 25/02/2011 09:43

fiddledee i have the cat and dog cylinder one, i just stand over the wheelie bin and pull it out through the hole in the bag, doesnt take long. how cheap am i? Blush i dont dry out tea bags and reuse them but have thought about it (heehee)

TheSkiingGardener · 25/02/2011 09:46

Another one who used to love Dysons but is now a Miele fan. They are just amazingly good. Worth the cost as they just don't break.

haggis01 · 26/02/2011 18:29

Miele fan here too - bought one recently (TTX automatic) - great. Had a few different dysons over the past 20 years (ok generally) and a Henry who fell over when pulled and after 2 years (just as the guarantee ran out and I had bought an industrial quantity of bags)) had a puff of black smoke come out of his engine and died. Henry was great with the all the extension hoses for reaching high places and doing my long stairs, but the suction on my Miele is great.

belledechocchipcookie · 26/02/2011 18:31

How do you know that it's on it's way out? Mine's 11 years old and is starting to get very noisy. Sad
