Please can you tell me how much you pay per month?

We are a family of four, two adults and two young children. We don't use excessive water and are careful in my opinion.

We pay £40 per month which I think is a lot.

Just wondered how we compare?

Thanks

my water bill has just gone up to £60 per month and there is only 3 of us Dh, me and teenage daugher - I was horrified tbh as was paying just £37 last year - we've checked for leaks etc, so can only assume my garden hose last summer was to blame - will be planting plastic flowers this year lol

Figgyrolls · 11/02/2011 23:21

I think we are about £40, but that was £70 per month not on a meter when we lived in London Shock!

ijudge · 11/02/2011 23:22

We got charged £50 for 2 adults and one baby, changed over to a water meter and they owed us so much money it went to just £5 a month for a while.

Now we have used up all the credit its £23 a month - so half the price of what we would have been paying

snorkie · 12/02/2011 00:05

Where you live makes an enormous difference to water bills. It also makes a difference as to how little you need to use before a meter costs in. There is a huge pricing discrepancy between different water companies.

Where do you live and who is your supplier?

SlobbyBOB · 12/02/2011 00:19

On a meter with UU, last half year bill was £188 so 31 quid a month.

Family of 4. DW bath every day. washing 3-4 times a week.

Fizzylemonade · 12/02/2011 00:26

We pay £30pm, Yorkshire water. Family of 4, showers daily, shallow baths every other day for DCs. Washing machine on daily, ditto dishwasher.

Watered the veg garden with hose pipe last year as we didn't have a water butt (first summer in our new house)

BelieveInLife · 12/02/2011 12:44

we are in the South East and our water is £57 p/mth. That's 2 adults, 1 baby and 2 dogs. That's a lot isn't it?

TheMonster · 12/02/2011 12:46

Ours is £70 a month Shock

I blame DP Angry

JarethTheGoblinKing · 12/02/2011 12:53

£27 a month, on a water meter.

I wonder how much difference not using a dishwasher makes. We do have a power shower though, and DS has a daily bath, so we're not particularly tight with water useage.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 12/02/2011 12:55

Just thought of something - if you have a water butt or a soakaway and therefore reducing the amount of waste water being taken away, I believe you can get a discount on your bill. I have 7% in mind, but that might not be correct.

Worth looking into anyway.

LIZS · 12/02/2011 12:55

about £20pcm

Figgyrolls · 12/02/2011 13:40

Actually I think ours might be a bit cheaper but then you have to weigh up those costs with the fact that we aren't on mains drainage and so pay for our cess pit to be emptied, this has been problematic and pricey as we discovered that the previous owners put the guttering into the cess pit Hmm so after lots of snow and rain it has been filled quite quickly. Dickheads.

Matildathebrave · 12/02/2011 13:41

Thanks all, we are in the South East and with Veolia Water previously Three Valleys.

We are checking for leaks today with the water meter.

Just thought £40 per months seems such a lot. Maybe it's because of the Power Shower which is used daily as is the dishwasher and washing machine.

LifeOfKate · 12/02/2011 14:05

Just looked at last bill, it was £27, DH seems to think it's normally a bit less though.

Jareth - not sure a dishwasher makes a difference, we have one (although it's a slimline one) and it's on every day.
DH has a bath nearly every day. DS and I are much more conservative scuzzy and I have a shower every other day and DS has a bath possibly a maximum of twice a week. Washing machine is on about 4 times a week. We have a waterbutt and rarely use a hosepipe (just a little bit last year when we laid a new lawn).

We're with Anglian Water and are in the North East if that makes a difference?

FeathersMcGraw · 12/02/2011 14:09

£40 here for 2 adults & 2 young children...

In our last house (non metered) we paid £27

LifeOfKate · 12/02/2011 14:11

Just had a quick google about dishwashers, most studies suggest that unless you're seriously miserly with your water when washing up, a dishwasher uses less water than washing up by hand.

Meglet · 12/02/2011 14:12

£27 a month, one adult, 2 toddlers.

Washing machine & dishwasher on a few times a day. I have showers though and the dc's bathe every other day.

wildstrawberryplace · 12/02/2011 14:14

We pay about the same as you and we don't really limit our use.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 12/02/2011 14:20

I'm surprised ours is so cheap then, we use the washing up every day, and for some reason theirs always a shit load of washing up to do.

DS has a bath every single day, DP has a very deep bath about every other day..

Thames Water here - I thought they were one of the more expensive ones.

Sanesometimes1 · 12/02/2011 17:31

Wessex water here - looks like I am paying way over the odds !!! average seems to be in the mid £30's - any suggestions ppl on how I can reduce ? have same as most of you power showeer x 3 daily, washing machine x 1, and dishwasher x 1 daily -don't thinks that's excessive ! perhaps it wasn;t watering the garden last year that's done it ??

JarethTheGoblinKing · 12/02/2011 17:58

Get a water butt. :-)

LifeOfKate · 12/02/2011 19:42

Yes, definitely get a waterbutt for watering the garden, we grew loads of vegetables last year and rarely used water from the tap. I was actually quite shocked at how little rainfall it takes to fill the waterbutt, and it lasts ages :)

Umm, other than that, we don't have a power shower, our water pressure is very good and we've actually got a limiter on it... cannot remember what it's called, but we got it free... if I can remember, I will provide a link! I don't have a shower every day though (my very dry hair would never forgive me!), could you just have a wash in the sink one day and a shower the next? I've never had any complaints about being smelly :o

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 12/02/2011 19:47

£45 a month here, for two adults and two children. The washing machine is used daily, as is the dishwasher. At least two showers and a bath a day here, so fair enough I think.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 12/02/2011 19:50

ahh.. I remember the days when my water bill was £8 a month.

loola2shus · 12/02/2011 19:53

Hi average consumption for 4 occs is £31.50 at the water co I work at, Dishwashers def do increase consumption as do power showers!

BTW Av consumption is assuming you are only using wash mach a few times per week and not using d/washer, hose pipe etc..

Fyi av cons for 1 occ 17.50 2 occs 23.50 3 occs 27.50, if you go on your suppliers website they should have a calculator!
