Would this be too sad?

Hi

I am trying to cut back on car use.

I am trying to do smaller, more regular shopping trips by walking to the supermarket but this isn't easy as we are a family of 4 and the shopping is too heavy for me.

Would it be too sad to buy a shopping trolley?

Are they exclusively for small ladies over 80 years of age, wearing woolly hats and heavy coats even in 90 degrees?

Should I be shot for even thinking it????

I have one.

A very posh one.

If anyone comments on it just tell them, "All the chic ladies in Geneva use them".

TitsalinaBumSquash · 09/02/2011 11:35

You can get some quite funky ones these days..

here

TotorosOcarina · 09/02/2011 11:35

LOADS of mners have them,

i like this black one

Ooopsadaisy · 09/02/2011 11:39

No-one under 80 uses them where I live.

I would love to take the plunge and set the trend but I just can't summon up the courage.

this is mine

Ooopsadaisy · 09/02/2011 11:50

Thanks for all your links.

At least I know they don't have to be tartan !

OP posts:
scurryfunge · 09/02/2011 11:54

Oh, I see what you mean! I thought you meant you were going to borrow a metal trolley from the supermarket and push it home Grin

Ooopsadaisy · 09/02/2011 12:07

Oh Scurry - there's an old homeless man round here who carries all his belongings around in an ASDA shopping trolley!

No - that wasn't what I was thinking!

I'm not quite that sad (yet).

Threelittleducks · 09/02/2011 12:09

I thought the retro vintage shabby chic thing was still going on? A tartan baggie on wheels may help you clinch that look Wink

Threelittleducks · 09/02/2011 12:10

On a realistic not, I have one that I got from Tesco a while back - it's a fold-down shopping trolley. It was awesome - the wheels even folded flat for storage. Very durable too.

Ooopsadaisy · 09/02/2011 12:11

Oh there is no much about me that is already shabby. The trolley will not make it chic, trust me!

Do people use trolleys round your way?

OP posts:
exexpat · 09/02/2011 12:21

Ikea does them: shopping bag on wheels - not too old lady-like.

Ooopsadaisy · 09/02/2011 12:24

Thanks exexpat - but would you use one?

I have teens and they will be mortified. I just need to know if there is a chance of me being a trail-blazer with this one?

Will I be admired for single-handedly saving the planet (but looking a tit)?

OP posts:
marriednotdead · 09/02/2011 12:25

They seem to be making a comeback for those naaice laydees round here whose jute bags are simply too heavy.

I suggested getting one to DH. He gave me a withering look and said 'wait 'til I'm dead' Grin

Ooopsadaisy · 09/02/2011 12:26

I don't want to be a "naaice laydee"!

In no other way am I a "naaice laydee".

I just want to be normal and manage my shopping!

OP posts:
marriednotdead · 09/02/2011 12:26

So DH says no but trendsetter DD (24) reckons they're cool.

Go for it!

exexpat · 09/02/2011 12:27

I've seen people under the age of 50 round here using them - I live near a couple of roads with lots of good independent shops, so it makes sense. I don't have one at the moment, but I am quite tempted...

I think teens are basically mortified by whatever you do, aren't they? Or would they rather come with you and help carry lots of heavy shopping?

marriednotdead · 09/02/2011 12:28

If you don't have a queue of trolley-hating pisstakers to carry shopping for you at all times, get the bloody trolley!

Ooopsadaisy · 09/02/2011 12:31

I agree - teens are always mortified by me.

I cycle to work and they just cringe when their mates see me. I once overheard one of DS's mates saying "Your Mum's quite cool isn't she?"

Now I'm gonna be a MILF with a bloody trolley!

OP posts:
MmeLindt · 09/02/2011 12:33

Mothers are embarrassing to teens. Fact.

Even Lourdes must cringe sometimes at her Mum.

So many people in Europe use them. Saw a very cool looking young man pulling one home from the shops in Paris. It didn't cross his mind that only over 80s should use them.

But I know it's different here. I'd pull one with pride and set a trend.

SchrodingersCatFliesToOz · 09/02/2011 12:40

I was going to get one of the funky ones (strippy or floral) so I wouldn't look like a granny. I had DD2 instead so I am back with a pram for shopping but as soon as she walks all the time I will get one.
Or you can have a back pack like I did when a student (but I am sure you will have complaints too).
Save your back! Ignore the comments...

MmeLindt · 09/02/2011 12:42

Love the Orla Kiery one but Shock at the price

RobynLou · 09/02/2011 12:44

If it makes you feel better about getting one, every costume designer/stylist I know has one for when 'sourcing clothes' (going shopping) in central london Smile
