Would this be too sad?

Hi

I am trying to cut back on car use.

I am trying to do smaller, more regular shopping trips by walking to the supermarket but this isn't easy as we are a family of 4 and the shopping is too heavy for me.

Would it be too sad to buy a shopping trolley?

Are they exclusively for small ladies over 80 years of age, wearing woolly hats and heavy coats even in 90 degrees?

Should I be shot for even thinking it????

Well done Tits!

Now you've bought yourself a sparkly new trolley you can try it out for me and see what reaction you get.

I told my dcs I was considering buying a trolley. Reactions were not favourable.

DS says he will be unable to do his GCSEs due to mental torment.

DD said "Oh Mum, please don't. I have to live here, you know".

I used to have one when I was about 20 and then stupidly sold it at a car boot thinking I wouldn't need it and it was taking up space now I'm almost 30 and I'm considering getting one again.

schroeder · 10/02/2011 21:07

OOOpsadaisy Just do it- the first time feels really weird, but people really aren't staring at you they just want to ask you where you got it fromGrin

Grockle · 10/02/2011 21:12

I have one but I make DS(5) pull it Wink

Alouiseg · 10/02/2011 21:17

M&S do their own one. Friends of mine always come back with them from Ideal Home christmas thingy.

Hellebore1 · 10/02/2011 22:02

I love mine, even though I'm 56 I still got a funky one with polka dots. It's sooo useful and saves my back. Smile

Strawbezza · 10/02/2011 23:26

I've got one and it's great. I can recommend them.

Orissiah · 11/02/2011 08:49

Quite a few women in their 20s use them where I live - quite trendy trolleys too! Go for it, but buy a non-granny one :-)

Slightlyreluctantexpat · 11/02/2011 09:15

This is mine

It works well if it's full. If not full then it's a bit floppy and useless.

Doesn't look too embarassing though, and folds up when empty.

QueeferSutherland · 11/02/2011 22:38

My trendy Brightonian cousin uses one.

I would if I lived in town.

Slightly, how small does that one fold up? I'm looking for one for my mother to carry her cat food and wine home in so I don't have to make a 30 mile round trip to get them for her.Hmm

Slightlyreluctantexpat · 12/02/2011 01:35

Hi Queefer. Folded up, it is 15" long, 8" wide and 2" thick. It tucks under the arm like a big clutch bag. Weighs just under 3lb.

Can be a bit of a PITA to pull, though. You'd want to test it out. I think a rigid one would be more efficient but at least with this one I can hide it until I need it. I can stroll around all the interesting shops without looking like I've got a trolley then go the supermarket afterwards and load it up.

Hmmm, 30 miles is a bit of a journey for somebody else's shopping. Would a taxi or home delivery be simpler?

QueeferSutherland · 12/02/2011 22:57

You'd think, but my DM doesn't "do" online shopping in case her details get stolen. She's more than happy for me to do it online for her though.Hmm

Thanks for those details.
It sounds great, although I will go into CK in town to see if they have one I can play with.

DM gets her shopping on the way back from work, so she'd need to keep it away until then rather than dragging it into the office.Grin

Slightlyreluctantexpat · 13/02/2011 06:19

It might suit her then. She could take it to work unseen!

Another thing she could consider is a little suitcase or holdall on wheels. There are loads of those in luggage shops now. Some of them are pretty snazzy and look like big handbags. I think we're all getting weaker and nobody wants to carry their hand luggage any more.

iscream · 13/02/2011 06:33

Just get one! :)

BackforGood · 26/01/2012 14:42

Well, it's taken me a couple of years to get up the confidence to get one, but I bought myself a shopping trolley last week even though I'm not a pensioner. It's funky and SO useful. I just love it, and wish I'd 'come out' sooner Grin

PinotMN · 26/01/2012 14:53

Ohhhhh lordy, now I'm thinking of getting one Blush

I'm gonna look a tit aren't I?

MmeL yours is sooooo chic!

SP0104 · 27/01/2012 12:54

Sd is doing fashion and design at uni - she and all her mates have them, apparently its cooler than trying to carry loads of bags

Shutupanddrive · 28/01/2012 18:13

Don't do it!!
Get your shopping deliverd mid-week for a couple of pounds!!

Blatherskite · 28/01/2012 18:36

I desperately wanted one of these when I was a poor and car-less uni student! I had a half mile trek with heavy bags and would have killed for a trolley on wheels.

Once the children are too big for the pushchair I can see me wanting one again. My SIL is desperate for one too and she's sub-40 so nowhere near being an old lady.

Go for it. Remember, anyone staring is just jealous that they're still getting sore hands lugging great big bags of shopping home.

MoreBeta · 28/01/2012 18:47

Erm... maybe I totally missed the point but ..... "I am trying to cut back on car use."?

Why don't you just go online (I notice you have access to the internet) and do all your supermarket shopping there? We dont have a car at all and apart from a few bits once a week everything else comes in a massive truck (free of charge if delivered on the right day). No tartan trolley required.

harrietlichman · 28/01/2012 18:53

Go for it, they are a fab idea.

tethersend · 28/01/2012 19:31

Yes to a shopper.

But thrice yes to Internet shopping.

BackforGood · 28/01/2012 23:49

MoreBeta Because buying all your stuff from one supermarket is not a very ecomical way to shop. I go to the supermarket once a week (or at least 3 times a month) and then inbetween I have to top up things like milk (no room in fridge for a week's supply at once), bread (doesn't stay fresh for a week), fruit (nicer when fresher). When I'm in the High Street, I then pick up whatever we arre low on, that is cheaper to buy there - toilet rolls, bleach, cleaning products, eggs, soaps and shampoos, light bulbs, etc., etc.

Toomanyworriedsonhere · 28/01/2012 23:53

I have one - often complimented on it. And it carries my shopping.

And if you want evidence of cool people using them I have seen Mike Leigh more than once at Waitrose with one. Now that won't make you feel old!!
