I must admit I love those articles in magazines at Christmas ( can`t wait until the end of October for Christmas Editions) about making a lovely guest room .

What are your likes/dislikes.

I like 100% cotton bedlinen no 50/50 makes me sweat.

I like few nice hooks/ or drawers/dresser to put make up etc.

Good bedside light. Curtains that don`t let the light it.

Nice touches are soft towels/flowers/tissues.

Dislike

Nylon carpet are gives off sparks as you walk.

No Mirror.

Crappy pillows.

mildew around windows/dirt/dust.

Come Christmas I like to put mini tree/ stocking for guest in room and have a copy of Christmas Carol and the very funny Navity book by Gervase Flynnn by bedside.

No guests in it.

TooImmature2BMum · 18/10/2010 14:25

Bed bigger than postage stamp. My ILs have those horrible 4 foot wide small double beds, for pregnant me, broad-shouldered sprawling sleeper DH and dog who won't sleep out of our bed when in strange houses. My bed at home is a super-king-size, so am spoilt.

Also, decent bedside lamp so you don't have to get out of bed to turn the light off.

OooeeeoooeeeoooeeEthel · 18/10/2010 14:29

No 1 is decent bedlinen, whether it's on an airbed or futon or sofabed or proper bed.
Otherwise, lamp, towels, mirror.

YunoWhatYouDidLastSummer · 18/10/2010 14:30

A clean comfy bed, and an ensuite bathroom. If we're talking perfect.

CMOTdibbler · 18/10/2010 14:36

Go and stay in your guest room for a few days, and you soon find out (I've spent a few weeks sleeping in ours after smashing my wrist and having to sleep with it up all the time)

I hate cheap duvets, nowhere to hang anything or put down a suitcase, and not being able to find anywhere to plug a hairdryer in.

I like a bedside cabinet with lamp, clock/radio, nice towels, and a room that doesn't look like it is normally a dumping ground

An empty wardrobe with nice hangers (not those horrible wire hangers all left over from the dry cleaning and all the others that no one else in the house wants). Even Wikinsons sells wooden ones very cheaply.

A good mirror near a plug socket for my hair dryer.

Definitely a bedside lamp.

A dressing table would be awesome.

But really the main thing is that the person had made the effort TBH (well and good pillows obviously or else I may as well sleep on the floor).

IrmaGhostSlayer · 18/10/2010 15:28

I`m a wire hanger free zone ( always)

I bought some pillows at Bicester the Descamps ones but not sure if they are too hard. I can`t do feathers allergies !

nice towels reduced from white company too.

I like Melody Masion Dressing table.
here

this too !

Envy super kingsize bed

A basket with various painkillers, tissues, toothbrushes, combs etc.

And lots of pillows

HalloweeseG · 18/10/2010 16:14

Huge bed, a dedicated bathroom just for the guest, en suite is nice but not essential.

Cotton bed linen, hanging space, don't care if it's just a rail. Wifi.

neversaydie · 18/10/2010 17:12

Proper bedside light, one each (if double room), wastepaper basket, comfortable bed and enough bed clothes. Somewhere to put a suitcase to unpack it, and some empty drawers and hanging space. An accessible socket to charge phones, computers and all the other ellectronic gadgetry.

Plenty of books to read in bed.

No dust, and no cat or dog hairs (allergic to both).

I will happily do without any of the above to see good friends, but I appreciate them more and more as I get older and more set in my ways.

Orissiah · 19/10/2010 09:18

Proper bedside table and light
Mirror
Wardrobe space
Shelf space
Room not a dumping ground (remove)
Room not for hanging clothes up to dry (remove)
Carpet or rug
Water glass and jug
Nice pictures on wall
Nice bed throw/cover
100% cotton sheets/duvet
Clean pillows - not the family's old, stained ones
Clock that I can see from the bed
Floor space to put my suitcase on and open
A door I can fully shut (!)
A window I can open

BeenBeta · 19/10/2010 09:24

In addition to above, towling bathrobes, selection of toiletries in case any have bene forgotten. Muted decor.

Basically like a really nice hotel room.

throckenholt · 19/10/2010 09:24

And how many people have the luxury to have a completely spare room for guests alone, that isn't of necessity used as a store room ?

Personally I would like cotton sheets, and a bedside light, and a good mattress. As long as it is clean the rest doesn't matter - you would only be there for a few nights at most.

CMOTdibbler · 19/10/2010 11:53

There is a big difference between a room that is normally used for storage, but is tidied for guests, and sleeping/dressing etc in a room which is filled with piles of stuff such that you have no room round the bed, or anywhere to put down your makeup

MmeBodyInTheBasement · 19/10/2010 12:00

We don't have a mirror in the guest room, but there is one, and a plug for hairdryer in the guest bathroom.

Comfortable bed
Nice sheets
Big duvet
Adapters UK/Swiss German/Swiss

I like the little extras, such as flowers or toiletries, but they are not essentials, just makes the room more welcoming.

MaudOHara · 19/10/2010 12:36

Oh dear - any guests that have the misfortune to stay here have to sleep in DDs princessy pink room while she is evicted to her brothers room. So there is no room to put anything anywhere as every available surface is covered in gliterry pink tat.

flibbertigibbert · 19/10/2010 14:07

A dish on the bedside table so you can put your jewellery in it before going to bed

A decent mirror

Toiletries - preferably in a dedicated guest bathroom

A clean room which smells nice and fresh

FleeTheBeast · 19/10/2010 16:20

nice bedlinen, towels, flowers etc as listed above, plus a little decanter of brandy & couple of glasses so your guest can 'have a little nip' before dinner or bed as desired!

(I'm not a lush, honest, just think it is a little fun indulgence when your on a trip away!)

Our guest room is nicer than our bedroom Confused Not sure how that happened!

4plus1 · 19/10/2010 20:11

When i stayed in my cousins house in boston she had a wee basket on the bed filled with sweets, toiletries, a facemask, candle, etc and a card saying 'welcome to our home' on it. The americans are so good at little touches like that.

TheNextMrsDracula · 19/10/2010 20:17

The essential for me in a spare room is a bedside table - I can't bear it if I haven't got an alarm clock/box of tissues/glass of water close at hand. And a bedside lamp.

Our spare room is dd1's room - she gets kicked out into her little sister's bunkbed whenever we have guests.

Her room is quite grown-up, though, and has a mirror, bedside lamp etc. But a fairly uncomfortable pair of twin beds and more knick-knacks than a china shop!

IrmaGhostSlayer · 20/10/2010 11:18

Flee sounds lovely when can I stay ? Wink
