wallpaper on one wall - trendy or never to be repeated?

Floral, stripy, striking, feature wallpaper on just one wall. I see this in quite a few magazines. DH says it reminds him of the 70s fashion of one wall in one colour and the rest in a different one. I didn't grow up in the UK to have seen this trend, so to me it looks alright. Is it a nice trendy look or am I misguided and would I regret it?

It was very big in the 70s but has really come back, having the walls all neutral and then one striking wall is in. It seems to be fading out a little though this year and ive seen a lot of people wallpapering all walls but in a delecate pattern in pastle colours, maybe one wall was soo last year but i say do whatever you like its your house, if you like it go for it!!

LittleCheesyPineappleOne · 10/10/2010 14:13

I think it's going out of fashion again.

DarciesmumandTTC2 · 10/10/2010 14:15

I wanted to have it when we recently decorated our living room but decided against it in the end.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 10/10/2010 14:15

Oh, thanks for replies. I might stick with all plain paint. I'm not exactly adventurous but I thought it looked alright in magazines. But then I suppose that was the intention!

we've got magnolia on the wall and put some nice lamps around and pics on the wall and looks fab :) so glad we didn't put the paper up now.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 10/10/2010 16:40

Darciesmum - Off white is my plan too. Then saw a few nice articles and thought how boring I was being and to go for it. Then DH gave me a reality check. Now I remember that had been my original plab too, to put some really nice phramed photos we have on the wall. Maybe I can arrange those to look artistic and give that extra bit of character.

I've just wallpapered one wall and the rest neutral and I think it looks fab. Don't give a toss if it's in or out, my living room and dining room look great :)

linspins · 11/10/2010 09:42

I've just done this is my dd bedroom - a creamy yellow background wallpaper with a delicate floral pattern on one wall, and the other walls the same creamy yellow colour paint. It looks beautiful (want it to be my bedroom!).
I think go for it, and don't worry about trends unless you are moving soon.

APixieInMyTea · 11/10/2010 13:03

I did it in my ds1's nursery and it looked fab.

White wallpaper with pastel coloured circles and the other 3walls in a aqua coloured paint. Accesories to match the colours in the paper.

Wouldn't do it in main living area's though.

I always think living rooms especially look better with a nice light colour on the Walls (we're doing ours a very pale blue) an then bringing out a feature wall with some really nice artwork/photo's etc and bringing I. Some colour with lamps, curtains, sofa cushions etc.

Plus that way if you Ever fancy a change it's only bit's and pieces you have to re-do, not completely re-decorate. (or is it just me who gets bored easily Grin )

SixtyFootDoll · 11/10/2010 13:05

Think its already starting to look dated and a bit try too hard.

I go for the easy option of emulsion every time. Grin

camerondiazepam · 11/10/2010 13:15

You could always use some big wall stickers instead, then you can rip 'em down nice and easy when you get bored of them.

Maisiethemorningsidecat · 11/10/2010 13:25

We've done it (fnarr fnarr) in our bedroom on the wall behind our headboard, and on one wall in our mahoosive kitchen diner - looks fab and breaks up what would otherwise be miles of emulsion.

MisSalLaneous · 11/10/2010 18:17

I like it if done in a very non-obtrusive, not in your face way - e.g. roughly the same colour as the wall, but with some texture like the patterns in a shinier print. Hmm, my description sounds horrendous, I know, but kind of an understated statement wall, if you will. Grin Now how is that for the worst sentence ever?!

minipie · 11/10/2010 18:20

I think it's very much "of an era" i.e. the past 3-4 years or so. So people will know exactly when you did your house up and it might look a bit dated in a few years. If you care about such things Grin

nannynobnobs · 11/10/2010 18:21

I've just done the wall at the top of my stairs in B&M's finest green floral paper (£3.99 a roll and I only needed one!) and the other walls in cream to match the flowers on it. It looks fab and not so cramped as if I'd done all of it in paper.

DarciesmumandTTC2 · 11/10/2010 19:19

CTA - you make it your own at the end of the day if people don't like it well tough on them lol

CristinaTheAstonishing · 13/10/2010 23:16

Good to hear it's working for some people. I know I should do it for me to like, not the impression it would leave on someone else on a very occasional visit. In fact today I got in touch with a friend who has some beautiful photos and asked her for some, I can make some 'art' out of them.

OP posts:

Gosh, didnt realise I was so dated! I have had one wall splashed with a Harlequin (think it was the decadence range) loud reds, black leaves - madness. Harlequin are very up to date, this paper was £35 a roll so I wouldnt say its outdated. Everyone loves it. the room would have looked boring and 'safe' what would of been worse was a flat red plain wall.

Glam..I love it.

Orissiah · 14/10/2010 19:30

I wanted the wall with the fireplace as a feature wall so, instead of wallpaper I covered it in framed black and white photos (my own photos of Thailand temples etc) instead. It draws the eye to the wall and looks quite grown up. I found the idea of wallpaper too dated (having grown up with it in the 70s myself!).

Orissiah · 14/10/2010 19:37

Forgot to say, that my living room walls (indeed all the walls in the house) are pure white, then there are the black and white photos with white mounts and black frames. All colour in house is provided by accessories eg red sofa and grey and cream cushions, ancient red Persian rug, beige mohair throws, and walls and walls of books (one entire wall in the living room is covered with bookshelves and I love how the book spines add lovely shots of colour against the white). Who needs wallpaper ;-)

CristinaTheAstonishing · 15/10/2010 19:59

That sounds rather nice, Orissiah.

In a magazine spread I saw a wall of books where they had been arranged the books according to the colour of the spines. Looked great, these blocks of colour.

Deux · 15/10/2010 20:35

Crikey, really must preview my posts. where they had arranged the books according ...

wukterWOOO · 15/10/2010 20:39

I always do that with my books Deux. It does look great. And you get excellent juxtapositions.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 15/10/2010 20:40

But how do you find your books?
