What do you use bleach for?

I have only ever used bleach for the toilet.

Saw on a friends facebook today that she "bleached her whole house"

I have never even though about it for general cleaning.

What do you use it for?

floors, cups, teaspoons and ds's whiteboard marks o polo shirts!!

onepieceoflollipop · 09/10/2010 20:51

I do use it for the toilet.

I also occasionally (say twice a month) use a mild solution to bleach dishcloths and kitchen flannels. (rather than use a lot of wipes on the dcs' faces we have a clean kitchen flannel every day rinsed in warm water). I find that that despite daily washing the flannels start to smell without the occasional bit of bleach.

GeekyGirl · 09/10/2010 20:54

Removing tea stains from around the kitchen plug hole/sink.

Disinfecting the kitchen sink after I have washed my shoes in it.

Bath/shower mats come up well too.

SingleMumAndProud · 09/10/2010 22:13

Really onepieceoflollipop? We have never had that issue with the flannels, although maybe I just haven't noticed?! lol. I do put them straight in the washing machine after each use though, so they get washed whenever I next use the washing machine. My DD2 gets SO messy during a meal, that it couldn't possibly be reused. She is gross! lol

Is bleach OK on any type of floor? I can never get my black tiles to look clean? Would bleach help?

Didn't think of doing my shower mat! I just chucked mine as it was minging! Could probably of bleached it!

I use it in the bathrooms for all surfaces and fixtures and in the kitchen for sink and countertop (tiled) and the fridge exterior and handle, also the cabinets (80's style laminated Blush), but not the kitchen floor. Also a little in a white wash (in my house that includes towels as they're white) or for a sheets wash. I soak cotton balls in bleach for attacking spots of mildew.

If your shower mat has a rubber backing, don't use bleach for it.

I was advised to pour a cup of bleach into each drain every month to keep the pipes moving, and kill off tree roots that tended to interfere with the main line out to the street.

I bleach the family toothbrushes about once a month too and the horrible washup brush gets a go about once a week or as needed.

I use diluted white vinegar or diluted ammonia on wood floors, or windolene with ammonia for spot cleaning.

dearprudence · 09/10/2010 22:41

Bleach for stains on sink and on underside of washing up bowl. Also dishcloths occasionally (especially microfibre ones).

mathanxiety - toothbrushes??! Confused

geraldinetheluckygoat · 09/10/2010 22:47

Mathanxiety gets the "Best Bleacher" award! I love a bit of bleach too, but yes it is bad for the environment....I soak ds2's polo shirts in bleachy water once a week as they are totally stain ridden after one wearing...

Great on tiles in bathroom, spay on a solution and leave over night, gets rid of that orange stuff that gets in the grout and mildew spots. Great for tiles behind toilet if you have boys weeing ALL OVER THE FARKING PLACE Hmm

stofstg · 10/10/2010 04:27

my bleach lives behind the loo but i also sometimes use it for floors. Although i buy prefer fragranced loo cleaners such as toilet duck, i like clinical germ kill of bleach to make sure any germs zapped. Other than that i feel too much bleach is probably a bad thing for one's health.

ravenAK · 10/10/2010 04:31

I run the spout of the Domestos bottle along manky grouting.

& a half-termly soak of school shirts.

I do use it on floors quite often too - mostly because I prefer the smell of bleach to artificial lemon/pine - bleach + washing up liquid works just as well as multi purpose cleaner (& is cheaper).

ethelina · 10/10/2010 04:44

I threw the bleach out following last weekend's debacle where dh used neat bleach on the worktops and left it on there to "really deep down clean" and forgot to tell me. 1 expensive ruined top later the bleach has been banned from this house.

mathanxiety · 10/10/2010 06:20
Smile

I do the toothbrushes because they are close to the loo and I read about the aerosol effect of flushing toilets with absolute horror. I make the family flush with the lid down, but you never really know.

BeenBeta · 10/10/2010 08:35

Toilets and tea/coffee stains in the kitchen sink once a week.

Bleaching a whole house?

Panzee · 10/10/2010 08:39

Toilet, plugholes and kitchen sink with cloths in it. Also did the washing machine and cleaned the bin with bleach yesterday.

Faaamily · 10/10/2010 08:44

Wow. I have never used bleach in my life. Am I weird?

geraldinetheluckygoat · 10/10/2010 10:59

I have "bleached the whole house" before, it was when the kids had a nasty vomit bug. You know when you're convinced you can smell illness everywhere? I didnt really bleach the house as such but I went around with diluted bleach in a bucket and mopped and wiped all the floors and surfaces that I could. I think it is the psychological feeling bleach smell gives me that I have killed all the germs.....usually I am not nearly so anal about cleaning, only when theres been a sick but of some sort and i dont want to catch it...

geraldinetheluckygoat · 10/10/2010 11:03

*sick bug, not sick but, obviously...

yes faaamily get and buy some to be part of the Bleach Club, quick!Mathanxiety is the leader, and we are all working up to bleaching the toothbrushes.... Grin

SingleMumAndProud · 10/10/2010 11:07

mathsnxiety - I understand the the with germs and toilet brushes, but you seriously put bleach in your mouth? I would rather buy a new one than use bleach. I have thought about using sterilizing tablets on them before but bleach? That can't be good for you?!!

OP posts:
CheerfulYank · 10/10/2010 11:15

I just use it for general disinfecting. Countertops, etc, and I always put it in with my whites load of laundry.
