What do you use bleach for?

SingleMumAndProud · 09/10/2010 20:49

I have only ever used bleach for the toilet.

Saw on a friends facebook today that she "bleached her whole house"

I have never even though about it for general cleaning.

What do you use it for?

Those two cleaning ladies (aggi and ??? forgotten her name) say you can put your toothbrushes in the dishwasher once a week.
I'm sure if you rinsed them well afterwards, you'd be fine.

Schroeder · 10/10/2010 18:40

I use tcp for toothbrushes if necessary.
How do you put bleach in your washing machine? Does it go in the drawer?
If you use bleach on your floors; don't you end up bleaching your socksConfused

Miasma · 10/10/2010 18:47

Like geraldine I've bleached every hard surface after an illness.. Literally everything, banisters, toys, drawer handles etc.

I'm a complete slob normally though and might stick a bit down the toilets once a week or so. I have a bleach spray for the kitchen but wouldn't use it neat in there.

llareggub · 10/10/2010 19:03

Those of you who bleach clothes to get stains out, have you ever tried putting stained clothes on the clothes line? Stains come out very well in the sun. I've never bothered bleaching stains or using stain remover, just good old sunshine.

Anyway, in this house I use bleach for loos and sinks and nothing else.

wigglesrock · 10/10/2010 19:08

I bleach worktops, toilets, back yard, plugholes, sinks, floors, everything. I also add bleach, washing up liquid into seperate bottle and use that for cleaning I heart bleach, mind you I'm very working class Smile

janek · 10/10/2010 19:42

faaamily - i don't use bleach. never have. hate the smell, hate the idea, hate the chance of it leaving stains on my clothes.

it's ecover all the way in this house.

any foisty flannels/dishcloths can be boiled if the nappy wash isn't hot enough to get rid of the foist. which it is.

you are normal.

geraldinetheluckygoat · 10/10/2010 20:21

yes, I use sunshine for stains too, but when theres no sun, i use bleach!
Wigglesrock, what do you find to bleach in the backyard?? Grin

angelbutterfly · 10/10/2010 20:26

a friend of mine had a cleaner round and she said she used bleach everywhere and the house was gleaming. So now i use it to clean all rooms /tabletops/kitchen worktops/ ect.

mathanxiety · 10/10/2010 21:20

Oh dear god no -- no bleach gets into anyone's mouth; I rinse the toothbrushes thoroughly.

Diluted bleach or even a small amount of undiluted bleach won't harm you that much apart from stinging any mouth sores you have. I found this out when DD1 drank some as a toddler.

luciemule · 10/10/2010 22:38

math Hmm at 'won't harm you much apart from stinging any mouth sores you have' - Grin

angelbutterfly · 10/10/2010 22:38

oh meant to say diluted bleach ... ofcourse...

luciemule · 10/10/2010 22:41

you should be careful though mixing other substances with bleach. I do mix a bit of washing up liquid with bleach for my floors but never put my head near as some thigns mixed with bleach can cause toxic fumes!

angelbutterfly · 10/10/2010 22:44

bleach and water seem to work...

StealthPolarBear · 10/10/2010 22:50

No one mentioned anal bleaching yet??

Anyway, I use mine down the toilet, down the sink and shower drain and if we've been ill use it to clean the batrooms. I used to use it to clean everywhere but it's really not necessary.

I use Milton on toothbrushes, apart from anything else I wouldn't want something in my mouth that had come out of something that had rubbed round the toilet rim...iyswim

minipen · 10/10/2010 22:51

we use steralising tablets for cups & chopping boards for fear of tasting bleach.

Bleach is for toilets, sinks & plugholes, like others have said don't mix with anything else!

luciemule · 10/10/2010 22:52

Milton's a great idea for toothbrushes stealth

StealthPolarBear · 10/10/2010 22:56

yes, unfortunately now DD is 1 and at the stage of eating raisins off the floor, food off the grass, and licking other children, I don't really have any other need for it :o And so I have to buy it specially, which I never remember to do.

TheNextMrsDepp · 10/10/2010 22:59

Apparently you shouldn't use bleach down toilets because it can damage the rubber seals on the wastepipe.

Sorry if that's bad news to all you serial bleachers!

nameymcnamechange · 10/10/2010 23:00

Never use it. The smell makes me want to heave. Can't bear to be in a house which has recently been bleached.

galletti · 10/10/2010 23:01

Toilet, plugholes, and once a week I fill up kitchen sinks with water and bleach to give a freshen up. Oh, and my own designer bleached jeans - ie. leant on pool of undilted stuff and now have very pale patch on knee - dd thinks they are great, and can't understand why I don't want to wear them out. They were my fave pair!

Theincrediblesulk1 · 10/10/2010 23:16

The whole bathroom and the whole kitchen

I am a bit bleach mad.

droves · 10/10/2010 23:34

mathsnexity ...dont bleach the toothbrushes .... its toxic ! , use milton/baby sterilising stuff instead.

TheNextMrsDepp · 10/10/2010 23:37

I had a lovely black "granite" kitchen sink in my old house. I decided one day to use bleach to take out the teabag stains......and it went grey Sad

Step away from the bleach.....

maktaitai · 10/10/2010 23:42

Bloody hell. Feel a bit stressed reading all this.

Having said that, I bleach the toilet as when I use other stuff, I just don't feel it is clean. I use diluted bleach to clean the flushing handle, the bathroom doorknob and the bathroom light pull very infrequently. I cold bleach white stuff if there are stains I've missed - sunshine is good but there are stains it just won't handle!

Miasma · 11/10/2010 02:45

Milton and bleach are both sodium hydrochloride.

Bleach isn't toxic as long as you rinse it off properly. You only need a little bit diluted for itto work. I wouldn't put neat bleach on a toothbrush but a little bit in water is fine if you rinse it off well afterwards.

I wouldn't want to put my toothbrush in the dishwaser swilling around with all that manky food etc! Gross.
