Welcome to the October 2010 Fledgling Flying thread!

This is where from the 1st of the month, we attempt to declutter and follow the 30-step wisdom of the Fat Fairy, with lots of chat and support and mutual motivation along the way. (More info available here!

Many thanks to our September thread leader StillCounting for guiding us through the traumatic back to work and school period with lots of support and guidance!

As usual we will be following a three-pronged approach (and don't worry - we are all at different stages):

  • repeat or start baby steps (again!)
  • repeat baby steps + do 15 mins a day decluttering in the current zone

or

  • reinforce babysteps and do daily missions if you have finished decluttering.

Together we can do it! All newcomers welcome!

Evening everyone,

A busy day for lots of people I think. I have got a busy evening in prospect as I decided to spend the time before and after tea with the DCs instead of dumping them with the telly and Ipad to do all my clearing up, making packed lunches etc. DS has been hyper lately so wanted a nice calm, relaxed evening, which was had on the whole. We watched the Jungle Book which is a nice chillout sort of film.

Swan glad the funeral went well, it does seem a contradiction, but they can be really uplifting I think.

Toffee - on second thoughts, Swan is right. one of each sort of screwdriver in the kitchen, everything else in the shed (I used to keep it all under the stairs but moved it to the shed a couple of months ago, tis much better).

Ellie - your weekend sounded lovely, where did you go?

Pumpkin - hope DS has stopeed screaming and is asleep, and that you are OK.

Bob - nightmare, at least you were at home when it happened so you didn't get completely flooded.

Ihate - wins todays Super Flyer award! I was wondering if you had a recipe for Chilli jelly by the way? I adore it, but have never found a good recipe.

Linzer - hope you had a nice quiet day after yesterday. Last time DS had a friend round for tea he spent the whole time trying to get the friend to play football, friend isn't in the least bit interested and only wanted to play with the train set, neither of them seemed all that bothered that they ended up playing separately but I found it v. stressful. Re iron, do you drink a lot of tea? I read once that you shouldn't give toddlers tea because it leaches iron away, same for adults I guess.

SC - oh dear, more colds, hope nothing too serious for any of you. I seem to have lurched from one cold to another since the start of term, the DCs seem to be immune .

PA - we haven't heard from you for a few days, we know you had your appointment today, come back and talk to us when you feel up to it, thoughts and prayers (and hugs) for you and your family at this time.

Waves at everyone else.

Wednesday.

Babystep. Pick a mission and do it! Any mission. Doesn't have to be from this week.

Mission. Clear out your medicine cabinet and a sock drawer.

Reminders for Wednesday

Goodness me everyone's been busy, particularly ihate. I am very Blush at my own rubbishness (although in my defence I am still feeling quite ill)

Have changed the bed and taken the bins out and will put a load of washing on before bed so not all bad.

Thank you for the sympathy, not sure I deserve it really as I've only got a bad cold Grin, but it is more miserable when you're pregnant and can't take anything much for it.

Hoping PA is OK

SaharaS · 12/10/2010 23:21

oops, have lost a week! Work, weekend away, and very distracted by unexpected possible house move...

Now, my sink is very shiny and shoes are tied on but I'm a bit scared by the 27 fling thing!

PA sending good wishes, and goodnight to all

LinzerTorte · 13/10/2010 07:12

Morning all,

I ended up having a much quieter afternoon yesterday, thank goodness - greatly helped by the fact that DS was out at a friend's! I still don't seem to be making much headway on my list, however; I really need to stop giving up for the day as soon as the DC arrive home at lunchtime.

MrsD I don't drink a lot of tea - the only time I have more than one cup is when I meet up with my English friend here, when we frequently get through several pots! - but I have heard that tea and coffee can stop you absorbing vitamins and minerals, and I am trying to cut back on my coffee drinking. Actually, it's more to do with the fact that I rarely have time to sit down with a cup of anything hot in the afternoons (unless we have friends over) than a conscious effort to reduce my caffeine consumption - I just wish I could say I was feeling better for it, but no noticeable effects so far unfortunately!

I've promised myself I'll be off MN by 8.15 (10 minutes to go), so must post my list and run:

Morning routine
15 min decluttering
Bathroom mission - although I think I may ignore this, as I'm sure I did it last month and I don't think our medicine cabinet gets that dirty (will just check whether any medicine has expired in the meantime)
Mission in DC's rooms
Finish preparing English lesson
Finish application to translation agency
Send school photo to GPs (NB find out from DH where it is first done)
Afternoon routine
Ballet run
Remind DD2 to fill in friendship books
Letter
Pay holiday deposit (and poss. insurance)
Decide about travel insurance for flights at Christmas
Evening routine

Stillcounting · 13/10/2010 09:10

Good morning everyone. Thanks for steps MrsD

Chilly here and dd still off school.

Short post because all a bit "bleurgh". It's going to take a huge act of will to stop Mmnsetting and/or watching Chilean minors being rescued (fantastic miracle though this is!!) and actually do something productive today instead....

Linzer I'd heard that tea can reduce iron uptake ....I wonder if coffee does ... must be difficult to give up caffeine living where you do though!! Possibly bordering on sacriligeous!!

Saraha good to see you! I think the trick is not to think too much about the 27 items - just set the timer for 5 mins and "fling"!!! Details here! Good one for the dc to help with!

Wrap up warm Pushme and have a good rest!

Swan Glad your neighbour had a good "send off". lol at swiss chard reproach.

Yr weekend sounds fab Ellie

Hope you have a better day today Bob, you certainly deserve it after yesterday. Hope your carpets aren't wet for a second time!

Am speechless at your list Ihate (in a good way!!!)

Waves to Pumpkin, Toffee, Feetheart, Tigger, Namechange MissB Namechange and hoping all OK PA

Not going to post a list because it's all too boring.

My morning routine is done, machines are humming, need to s&s and master swipe. After that, it's laundry/ironing and being confined to house playing snap with poorly dd again ....

Stillcounting · 13/10/2010 09:13

Forgot Mini-M and loads of others I am sure! Have a good day everyone.

swanriver · 13/10/2010 09:19

PMPY yes it is difficult to get much done, esp if pregnant too.

This morning have appt at 11 with priest
need to get through that with relevant forms. He is very kind, but I am not the most outgoing of parishioners so dreading it. I'm applying to four different Catholic/faith ss schools for ds1 and still not quite sure what order to put them in. At least don't have to decide order today

DONE

piano lesson and practice (oh dear forgot about that in paperwork crisis)
SWEEP floor truly dreadful, esp as tissue in laundry alert
put away laundry eventually

then ds Beavers, dd Brownies, homework x 3, helping at Beavers, ds piano lesson

Helloe everyone, manic but essentially useless day. Although have just had an altercation with the local youths so thats productive Hmm

today is dd 2nd birthday she was so sweet preparing food in her kitchen and feeding it to baby in babys new highchair. been sent of to nursery with the much longed for Hello Kitty cake.

-visited prospective primary open day about 5 hrs too early left to return this afternoon. It is about 5 miles from our village but is absolutely fab. I came out grinning and feeling really nervous as it is possibly not in our catchment. Although they have kids from far and wide and some from our village. ooo this school stuff is nerve racking.
-have dropped Dsis and bil at train station for their mammoth trip home to scotland.

  • filing at work
  • some inputting
-some prep for reconcillitions tomorrow -fed dogs -general procrastination

cant wait to pick up dd from nursery. a lovely homemade yeah right peppa pig cake awaits.

PositiveAttitude · 13/10/2010 17:01

Hiya all Smile,

Have been doing a little bit of lurking and want to thank you for your loveliness!!! Grin

Quick update on appointment yesterday: After waiting 2 weeks for the results, I was told that the biopsy had failed, so I would need an urgent repeat biopsy with a scan to assure that the needle went right into the tumour. Angry
Consultant has said he will not do the surgery because it is too tricky for him, so I will be passed onto another consultant when the results are all in. [double Angry Angry ]
I came away with absolutely no answers and just a million more questions and a load of time to wait again before I know anything [triple Angry Angry Angry ]
I was supposed to be going away with work next week, (consultant seemed a bit Hmm about me going), but plan was, away next week, scan and biopsy repeated the following week, then to see him again for results on 2nd November.
After speaking with a friend who just happens to be a retired consultant yesterday, she strongly advised me not to go away, or to push for the biopsy to be done before i go. I phoned at 9am and was told that my biopsy would be on the 1st November. I had a little "I dont think that is good enough after already waiting for so long and going round and round in circles and more questions than answers". She said she would speak with consultant radiographer (who would be doing it all). He phoned me himself about an hour later and said I should have it done ASAP and could I be at the hospital within the hour!!

So, done again. Less painful than last time and I can still go away next week. So far so good, just another wait now for these results yet again.

Hopefully I will be back in your midst soon, but at the moment I am just about managing the work load and trying to keep sane at home. DH is being lovely, he did the 100 mile cycle race in torrential rain and driving winds last weekend, fell off and broke his precious megaexpensive bike. Apparently that the bikes way of telling him that he should buy the newest, upgraded model megamegamegaexpensive!

Humungous waves to you all, Smile

Nettiespagetti · 13/10/2010 17:04

pa x posted.

A honey what a mix up. Well done on pushing to be seen, glad its been done and so sorry and [Angry for you having to wait yet again. Take extra special care of you. (((((pa))))))

BatBrains · 13/10/2010 17:49

SOrry that you are being messed about so muc. Although i am glad that the radiographer was so quick. Dont worry about flying, you are welcome to just pop in for a chat if you can face it. Even if its just to moan. take care.

Oooo Nettie i like that Grin

BatBrainsPumpkinHead · 13/10/2010 17:51

only babystep to be followed today - early night.

BatBrainsPumpkinHead · 13/10/2010 20:00

how is BIL?

MrsDinky · 13/10/2010 21:01

Evening all,

Well, PA, what can I say? So sorry this is happening to you, I'm glad the radiographer saw sense and called you back in today, did he say how long it would be until they have the results? Everything crossed for you. Keep lurking and pop in when you feel like it, we're all here for you and we don't expect any Flying .

BatBrainswhateveryournameis - time for bed soon, hope the meds are helping.

Nettie - aww, all the little girls love Hello Kitty don't they? Hope she had a lovely day.

Ellie - sounds as though you're firmly back on track.

Swan - how on earth do you fit in homework on Beavers and Brownie night? DS doesn't get much homework yet, but the nights when either of the DCs do activities are a bit of a write-off for getting them to do anything else.

SC I've been watching the miners too, DS is fascinated. Also, as one of my friends pointed out, enjoying the irony that Mrs Thatcher's 85th birthday has been firmly put in the shade by a bunch of miners.

Linzer - glad to see the photo to GPs finally got done!

Sahara welcome back, that sounds intriguing, an unexpected house move, not surprised you are a bit distracted from Flying.

PMPY hope you're feeling a bit better today, I'd forgotten about the not being able to take cold remedies when you're pregnant thing, what a drag. Thinking of BIL too.

Waves at everyone else.

Well, Flying was a bit hit and miss today. Manage to hoover most of downstairs (two small rooms) and scrub the kitchen floor, other than that just the usual routine stuff really. Played tennis, went to Sainsburys, went to a friend's for gossip coffee, and just got back from a PTA meeting, phew.

OFf to watch The Apprentice next, promise no spoilers tomorrow....

OP posts:
MrsDinky · 13/10/2010 21:05

Thursday Links

Baystep - reading one, therefore (in my opinion) optional!

Mission Clean bathroom sink and wipe down lightswitches, doorknobs in DCs bedroom.

Thursday Reminders.

OP posts:
elliepac · 13/10/2010 21:17

Ooooooo I'm watching the Apprentice too mrsd.

Not done bad today, list completed for the first time in aaaaaaaaaaages!

pa how utterly rubbish but at least the radiographer was on the ball. How long do you have to wait for results? Keep lurking and most importantly looking after yourself. . Xxxxxxxx

pumpkinbatwoman sleep tight

poorlypeople hope you are feeling better.

everyoneelse waves

pushmepullyou · 13/10/2010 21:49

PA that's rubbish, so Angry for you. I'm glad they've finally managed to get their acts in gear and redo the biopsy though. Hopefully you won't have too long to wait for the results? It is so awful psyching yourself up for something only to have to go through it all again a few days later.

Not a stunning day for the NHS here either as BIL's bone marrow biopsy is apparently also 'inconclusive' so they're treating him for leukemia anyway. They can't seem to get his anemia under control, but keep discharging him anyway. His blood count then plummets (down to 5.8 today from 10.8 on Monday, normal is about 14), he collapses and has to be rushed in to hospital, where they don't have a bed for him on the cancer ward because they discharged him so he has to sit about in A&E for hours at risk of infection waiting for them to get blood shipped over from Leeds Angry. They are giving him 4 pints of blood tonight and should be finished at about 3am, at which point they will discharge him.

Sorry that was a rather un-flying related rant, but it has been rather a trying day!.

On the plus side I have just about kept up with routines and as a bonus have fitted the curtain hooks Grin. Am amazed by how much better the living room looks for a pair of well hung (that doesn't sound right Hmm) curtains!

swanriver · 13/10/2010 21:57

PA that is truly astounding that it took you to force the issue, it just shows it is worth always standing up for oneself. Frightening though. I am waiting for dh's biopsy result too. I hope the same thing isn't going to happen to him, I think he wouldn't go back for a second biopsy, just cut and run Sad

no homework done except for ds1 (for dd to then scribble on itAngry but luckily they got some research to do for Monday, so we did a tiny bit of that on computer MrsD as you wondered Grin Homework came with capitals THIS IS NOT A PROJECT - clearly we parents are to be handled with kid gloves (we always complain about projects and how long they took and how we had to do most of it Grin

Done everything on list - apart from any housework. Did sweep floor though! And my hall is just about under control, as I feverishly stop paper building up there and waterbottles.

swanriver · 13/10/2010 21:59

PMPY that sounds awful too, so sorry for your poor BIL.
