How best to clean burnt stuff from bottom of Le Crueset dish?

I made some chutney in my Le Crueset casserole dish on the hob on Sunday but didn't stir it often enough towards the end and I now have a black, sticky area at the bottom of the dish that I can't scrub away.

What should I do?!

Biological washing powder, soak overnight. Gets rid of most burnt on stuff

colditz · 28/09/2010 18:58

Agree with battery human

TeaRocks · 28/09/2010 19:41

Great - thanks.

Or, put some hot water and washing liquid in the pan and put the pan on the hob. Once the water starts to simmer, the food should come away, or it will come away if you scrub it while it's warming on the hob.

Haliborange · 28/09/2010 19:46

Yes, cook it off as ILTMI suggests. Never fails.

stillbumbling · 29/09/2010 19:32

Biological washing powder. If soak doesn't work...

Bio poweder into water. Lots of it. Bring to the boil, leave it to cool. Do it again, and again and again if necessary. Scrub with green scotch bright scrathy things if poss. Change if liquid obviously dirty or use 2 to 3 times. I used a very large scoop full of biological wp.

Have done this with Le Creuset, totally saved it. I promise. Spent hours searching Mumsnet. Twas the only thing. Not the easiest solution but worth it given how much they cost.

Of course I always try my Fairy P Spray on everything first. But doesn't do it with burned on Le Creuset.

Try nothing else - You will not regret it!

miche8 · 29/09/2010 20:01

i've been putting star drops on my pans and leaving them to soak.

BagofHolly · 29/09/2010 21:12

My mum got me a thing called a Magic Eraser - you cut a bit off and rub it on anything and you don't need chemicals, it just brings any crap off anything! It really is magical!

TeaRocks · 30/09/2010 09:35

stillbumbling, you're right about Fairy Power Spray - it didn't do a thing!

However, the bio washing powder has done the trick - thanks ladies.

BagofHolly - will have to get hold of a Magic Eraser though, it sounds fab!

I think I'd be slightly cautious about magic eraser things and Le Crueset: they're actually rather abrasive, and the enamel of pans is best not scrubbed too hard. You can see how they work here.

stillbumbling · 01/10/2010 19:18

Hoooray for another saved Le Creuset. Wouldn't bother saving anythign else I own, all the others are cheap. But LeC are so expensive, well you've got to haven't you?

eloise0 · 01/10/2010 23:19

soak it in a solution of persil. it will come off easily

SoMuchToBits · 01/10/2010 23:22

I have used wire wool type scrubber on mine, and it has survived.

Cristiane · 14/01/2012 13:39

Resurrecting this thread to ask - would biological washing liquid do instead of powder?

ivykaty44 · 15/01/2012 19:39

make fudge in the same pan - it cleaned mine beautifully and the results where lovely - you do need to constantly stir the fudge for all the time it is cooking - approx 15-20 minutes.

ivykaty44 · 15/01/2012 19:40

Critiane - no its not the same the powder acts in the same way as the sugar in the fudge making - it gets of the dirt

DarlesChickens · 15/01/2012 21:29

When all else fails, try boiling rhubarb in thr pan -works like a treat every time (just don't eat the rhubarb after!)

ivykaty44 · 15/01/2012 21:37

rhubarb will damage the enamel though and the pan will suffer greatly. I learnt this with a slow cooker - it took the enamel of the inside of the pan.

Ladies, I came across a product for cleaning ovens called 'Revive Power Paste' in the Ideal Homes Exhibition in London. It is a dream product, only wipe it on the burnt areas and rub, then wash off. No boiling needed, no scouring, and not harmful to the skin. They have a website as well "http://www.revivepowerpaste.co.uk/". Amazing stuff.

krisskross · 21/05/2015 09:32

You can buy Le creuset cleaner called Le creuset pots and pans. I got ours in a dept store selling l c. It's about a tenner but lasts literally years, is great

FadedRed · 21/05/2015 09:38

Bicarbonate of soda, made into a paste with a small amount of water and applied to the burnt bits, then left for a few hours will clean any burnt pans, use a plastic scrunchy kitchen scourer (very gentle and won't damage surface) on any stubborn areas. Never fails and is very cheap.

Higgle · 21/05/2015 14:28

Bleach. I used it on my large Le Creuset casserole for 37 years before it got so chipped I bought a new one. I'm sure everyone will say "no" for some reason but it does work - even with really burned on stuff.

Mindgone · 13/11/2018 17:08

I just tried cleaning mine with biological liquid, but didn't look as though it was working, so I added some Vanish and boiled it. The dirt all came off, but it looks quite matt now, and a little grey. Have I ruined my precious, expensive Le Creuset casserole pot?? Shock
