Is Asda food rubbish?

Fed up with the sub-standard fresh food Sainsbury's keep sending us and the Tesco site is too sloooow (does anyone else find this?). What is Asda fook like?

LinenBasket · 20/09/2010 14:32

lots of good stuff in asda on the grocery front, but I do not like their meat.

Remotew · 20/09/2010 14:32

lol at 'Fook'. I shop there atm as money is tight. I shop in store so can be choosy. The food I buy is fine.

ShatnersBassoon · 20/09/2010 14:33

They're no different to any other supermarket; mainly fine, sometimes crap.

nameymcnamechange · 20/09/2010 14:35

I shop online at Asda but only for things that aren't fresh and have a long shelf life.

Everything fresh I like to look at and choose myself. Or I get it from Ocado - they are the only supermarket I trust to send food with reasonable use-by dates.

nikkershaw · 20/09/2010 14:49

i wish we had one, am very angry at the amount our tesco charge for stuff that goes off way too quickly

muggglewump · 20/09/2010 14:51

Fine.
I shop online with them and have had very few problems. Any I have had have been rectified quickly.

BunnyLebowski · 20/09/2010 14:52

Imo Asda is much much better than Tesco.

We are on a tight budget at the moment and spend £40 a week in Asda and that fills the fridge with fresh fruit and veg, meat (which I think is absolutely fine) and storecupboard supplies.

zookeeper · 20/09/2010 14:59

Another vote for Asda hear although I think that the fruit and veg at Lidl beats Asda Sainsburys and Tesco

zookeeper · 20/09/2010 14:59

God. Here. Blush

bumpybecky · 20/09/2010 16:57

asda are a nightmare here

the food itself is mostly very good, but I order online and the amount of items missing is ridiculous. They don't seem to be capable of making sensible substitutions so I miss out on loads of multibuy offers. Last order ended up with a refund over £30. The delivery driver told me he uses Tesco!

having said that though, I think it depends on the store, so it might be worth you trying yours :)

bacon · 21/09/2010 14:54

Asda do accommodate the value side more and will accept lower ingredient standards - anyone watch "discusting food" would see that Asda accept what others would not allow to be put in their readymeals, pies and pasties.

I disagree that you get more for your money cos some of their own brands are very poor quality, our local big Asda doesnt sell certain things that I need. Yes, some things are cheaper but for a reason. Its difficult to compare like to like because its not a good comparrison on some items.

The veg selection is very good. I wouldnt touch any Asda meat. I remember when Tescos was a nice store but its got that Asda feel now.

I'd rather Lidl to Asda for basics. I'm not convinced by delivery service. You have to watch the dates etc

systemsaddict · 21/09/2010 15:55

Delivery must depend on the local store, our ASDA is normally fab, and when there is the odd mistake the call centre have always been charmingly helpful in sorting it out. I like their own brand stuff too - maybe I'm not too choosy! but there never seems to be anything in the ingredients list that makes me worry, even on the smartprice stuff (some of which is great for the price, some of which is inedible, you just have to try it and see).

moragbellingham · 21/09/2010 17:19

Asda are great for dry goods/frozen/tinned and household.
Ocado for fresh meat and veg.

I have never been disappointed and you can guarantee the use by date online in days when you order for milk/bread/veg/meat.
And I hate anyone else choosing it for meWink.

droves · 21/09/2010 17:25

its great for wildlife in the fruit/veg.

Conundrumish · 24/09/2010 08:28

Bacon - ewww, I think you've put me off for good!

Avoid any ready meals, meat, etc. All hideous imo and really poor quality. It really is scraped off the factory floor. Even the md of the company admitted as much in a Ratner moment.

peachybums · 24/09/2010 09:41

I do not shop at asda, everytime ive walked in the store its looked like the fruit and veg is about to crawl out Grin. Fresh is not the word! I agree their ready meals are fowl (worse than most) and i wouldnt touch the meat there. So doesnt leave a lot really.

I used to shop at tesco via money supermarket but DP moaned he wanted to 'see' the products so we now go to either aldi for basic cupboard stuff or morrisons for the rest, although i dont like morrisons chicken as 9 times out of 10 its off by the next day! We usually go to tesco for this.

Lemonylemon · 27/09/2010 12:40

I will not shop at Asda. But I do shop at Lidl. Their fruit & veg are good, and their meat is good too.

Double post - sorry! Blush

GetOrfMoiLand · 27/09/2010 12:44

I would avoid Asda food.

It is our nearest supermarket, so sometimes do use it in emergencies, but would never buy meat or fruit/veg from there.

Would not eat the ready meals either. They look bloody awful. DP bought a curry from there once and it was truly inedible. Tried the houmoss and it was like mildly flavoured wallpaper paste.

Agree with posters that tesco is an equally miserable experience.

I use sainsbury's stuff, their basics range is very good.

Never have used any delivery service other thna that of Waitrose, which is exemplary, but cannot justify to self doing my weekly shop from there as it is far more expensive that sSainsbos.

Rainbowbubbles · 29/09/2010 14:51

Hi Pink!

Which Sainsbury's does your online shopping come from and what's the main problem with the fresh food? Is it that it's too close to the use/sell by date?

Just so that you know that if the use/sell by date is very close (eat the entire triffle, leg of lamb and box of eggs by this evening Confused ) then it should be placed in a blue bag and brought to your attention so that you can give it back to your driver and be refunded. If the food is not to your standard, i.e. triffle looks like an eton mess, avocado/bananas bruised and too ripe for consumption etc. then phone the care line and they will refund you or send you an e-voucher(quickest way)- they are always really understanding and friendly.

For those who only get half the shopping requested then that's unacceptable but you can tick the "replacement" box whereby they will replace for like item. It can be random or spot on - i once recieved a bulb instead of a strip light and honey blonde hair colouring instead of dark brown...but the entertainment factor was priceless. Or you could get two boxes of six eggs rather than a box of 12.

Sainsbury's food is great and also Waitrose. No comment on the rest Grin

baytree11 · 30/09/2010 00:25

i shop at Asda often, i don't shop online anymore ( only the first few months after my wee girl was born) Asda is cheap and resonable, fruit and veg fresh but i don't think they have a good selection of meat.

tefal · 30/09/2010 07:10

I used ASDA. Where we are they have a good selection of fruit and veg. I do usually take their organic or free range meats but do like M&S meat if I am close by.

TBH, I think they are all pretty much the same.

fairybubbles · 30/09/2010 09:54

I occasionally shop at Asda but when I do I end up doing another shop at M&S for meat.

We get milk and bread from farmfoods as DP passes it a few times a week and its v cheap.

Asda online is okay, I've never had any major issues. I called to complain about driver being 20 mins over the delivery slot and I was refunded the delivery charge.
