Where does your cheese grater live?

Mine gets shoved from pillar to post, with all my other NIMBY kitchen equipment complaining that it is not "one of them" and doesn't belong in their cupboard.

Sometimes it spends days standing sadly on the draining board, all alone.

Where does yours live? I would like to find mine a good home.

Grin at how many posts there are on where the cheese grater lives!!

He lives in the cupboard next to the saucepans, on his side. He's flat, so can be stored very easily, and his grates are a bit blunt, but we've had him for too long now that I can't bear to throw him out.

Well, the box grater lives at the back of the lower cupboard, behind the serving dishes, and the IKEA grater (which is the one that gets used when the cheese is going on the table) lives on top of the plastic kids plates, behind the proper plates.

This of course supposes that DH has actually put the damn things away, and hasn't just left them hidden at the back of the draining board in the hope that I'll just need to use it before I notice that it's been there long enough to gather dust...

It is comforting to read this and know that I am not the only one with an awkward cheesegrater.

Balanced on top of the rail we hand utensils on.

hang not hand!

Oh my hat - who would've thought that a grater thread could generate so much interest! I'm sure some people who receive nary a hairy eyeball are feeling most envious Smile.

Just for the record, my big cheese grater lives in the giant cupboard with the pots and sieves and my smaller microplanes are in the drawer with all the other utensils. The peeler is in the top drawer with the cutlery because I need it every day and can't risk another sliced knuckle in the frazzled search through the misc drawer.

Mine is sadly nomadic too.

I used to have a flat one in a drawer too, but it broke.

itstimmytime · 28/08/2010 21:48

On the shelf bit on top of my hanging pan thingy

DreamTeamGirl · 29/08/2010 00:53

Ahh now I have lots of stuff
So
Flat cheese grater is in 2nd cuterly draw along with rotary one
Box grater (never used and considering dumping) and juliene machine are in pan cupboard

Great thing about these threads is everyone CAN reply if they want as we all have cheese graters. well except the person on previous page. Its a great leveler

I used to have two. One was a triangular upright one with brown plastic sides and a handle, which is the only survivor of a kitchen set I got as a wedding present in 1980 (brown plastic was cutting-edge for kitchen equipment in 1980; I also received a bright orange Kenwood Chef) This lives in the cupboard with the baking tins, bowls etc, because I only ever use it if I'm grating a lot of cheese for something like cheese straws. For cheese for tops of lasagnes etc, I use one of those little ones with a handle, which lives in the cutlery drawer with it's brother the cheese slicer.

However, DS has now returned from university with a pasta bake habit and a large and aggressive box grater, which is currently glaring at me from the top of the microwave (previously the sole territory of the kitchen scales, which are looking pretty pissed off about it) It's supposed to be in the cupboard above the microwave with the sieves and measuring jugs, but there never seems to be a space there.

If DS hasn't moved out by the time DD finishes university next summer, there will be yet another grater in residence, and a three-way territorial dispute which could well inspire a sub-plot in Hully's Utensil Story pitch...
