fablon for shelves?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/08/2010 19:49

we are currently trying to make our kitchen more 'cosmetically acceptable' while trying not to spend any real money on it as either we will be moving or redoing it properly depending on what life has in store for us over the next couple of years.

our pantry has old wooden shelves with vinyl tiles that are peeling off. If we were to pull off the tiles and scrub the shelves well would fablon make a reasonable shelf liner for the next couple of years or would it end in tears and regret?

Could you just buy new wood, and cut it to size and paint white? That would look lovely.

We definitely had fablon in the pantry in my childhood house? It would be very retro.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/08/2010 19:55

We have thought about that Lynette - I'm starting with the easiest option first Grin
I think we could paint the existing shelves but dh grimaced at the idea, not sure why.

Looks like I'm the only person who cares about your pantry shelves1 Go for Fablon, and if you hate it you can always get new shelves.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/08/2010 11:45

thank you for caring Lynette Grin

sounds like a good plan!

I'm just jealous you have apantry/larder

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/08/2010 12:49

it is lovely :) the rest of our kitchen is teeny and rubbishly falling apart but I do love our pantry!

It looks great! I scrubbed out the pantry from top to bottom, removed the tiles from the shelves and floor and scrubbed it out again. Then painted the walls white with some leftover paint. dh cut me an extra new shelf from some wood we had to make the most of space. I fabloned the shelves with a cream marble effect and put cream vinyl tiles on the floor.

ok it might not be to everyones taste, but it looks hygienic and smart and I have more shelf space. Total cost of project £14.

I have new shelves in my pantry. DH/FIL put them in yesterday.
I will you on pantry lurve.
Ours cost a bit more than £14 though sadly - especially as DH had to buy lots more power tools to do the shelves

OhYouBadBadKitten · 09/08/2010 20:04

yay for you!!!! Pantrys rock! have you worked out what is going onto each shelf yet? you'll have to create more projects now to get your moneys worth out of the power tools!

I know have space for my jams and chutneys Grin

My Gran was a pretty impressive woman I'll have you know and she knew a thing about stocking a larder Grin

I want a pantry

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/08/2010 08:52

Did you see the Amish teenage program on Sunday? Now that was a larder - huuuuuuge with zillions of different homemade juices. I had larder envy! (cool Gran!)

I am also enjoying vicarious thrifty pantry love through this thread.

I am going to copy you in my new place which also has a small kitchen but a big pantry. I really like the word 'Fablon' too Grin.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/08/2010 10:38

oooo, a whole new pantry to fill! theres a wide range of fablon to choose from Grin

I too have larder envy and am now inspired to do our horrible shelf today.

We have a 60's stand alone larder which is screaming out for a fablon revamp plus a handle. The lack of handle has bothered me for years.

See what you have started, BadKitten. Grin

Heartsease · 10/08/2010 16:22

I just went to the house and checked it out. It currently has grubby vinyl wallpaper pinned to the shelves. I suppose the advantage of that is that you can take it out and redo it -- surely the Fablon is stuck fast? Painting also seems like a natural solution, but this Fablon thing has a hold on me now.

I am pretty sure my mum used to design psychedelic Fablon in the 60s, AND she once had an amazing pantry, so I will ask for her expert view.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/08/2010 16:26

the fablon is def peelable Heartsease - how cool of your Mum!!!!!! if you can find any of her designs around would love a link to them :)

Excellent Swans :) a new handle and pretty shelves will be just the ticket! (which pattern are you going for?)

Oh Lordy, I got carried away and took out all the units, worktop, the lot.

I had quite liked the thought of the polka dot one but the kitchen/ pantry looks like a bomb has hit it.

Please tell e it will look lovely when it is finished...

Heartsease · 10/08/2010 17:47

Yes, my mum is cool Smile. I think her designs are lost in the mists of time, but Googling around I did find this amazing advert:

Go Gay with Fabulous Fablon

Good luck SEQ!
