fablon for shelves?

we are currently trying to make our kitchen more 'cosmetically acceptable' while trying not to spend any real money on it as either we will be moving or redoing it properly depending on what life has in store for us over the next couple of years.

our pantry has old wooden shelves with vinyl tiles that are peeling off. If we were to pull off the tiles and scrub the shelves well would fablon make a reasonable shelf liner for the next couple of years or would it end in tears and regret?

I support you in your use of Fablon!!

I'm about to cover the side of a huge cupboard in the smartie pattern. In the old kitchen - soon to be [very small and no it's not a toy staorage area] playroom.

May even use carpet tiles on the floor.

They are so sensible.

What a funny advert!!

oh swans, it will look great honest!

Excellent tree! Carpet tiles too!! (could have given you some old brown ones I pulled up. Must have been practical as we've lived here a looong time.

Are you going to whizz round with the Ewbank once you've finished?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/08/2010 18:53

I am going to go into town first thing tomorrow to get Once paint and the fablon.

All hell was let loose and dh puffed his cheeks out so I knew things were a bit chaotic.

The good news is that I found my potato peeler and a rather nice lip gloss. Smile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 10/08/2010 22:50

lol - well done Grin

good finds too! thats the best bit about sorting things out.

Are you sure it's lip gloss? Not a decomposed relic of the pantry age? Like an old plum?

I only ask because I believe it is more traditional to find old screws, flour and trifle mix from the 80's. So lip gloss seems very good!

In 10 years we will re-do our pantries, and start a thread about the crazy polenta and Spelt we have found at the back, that never so much as got opened....

SwansEatQuince · 11/08/2010 09:25

Were you hiding in my kitchen, tree?

Yes, there were old screws, 1980's flour, polenta and spelt. Plus a large collection of tiny fish from sushi trays.
Worst of all was a tin of orphoids circa 1960 so we can all merrily go and catch orf now.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/08/2010 09:33

I felt a bit faint at the tiny fish til I realised what you meant! Had to google orphoids though Grin

nothing scary in mine thank goodness, just a bottle of homemade blackberry liqueur that I forgot we had :)

under the freezer which I defrosted a couple of days ago I found a lot of dust, a bit of pasta and the letter 'y' somewhat boring really.

I'm all excited as I bought some sparkly fablon, Once paint and then had a spat and drama at the checkout so walked out of B&Q, enraged.

The wicked cow lady on the checkout overcharged me by £20 and we had a dispute. I walked back in the main door and saw the manager. Oh, it was tense but I received an apology and my fablon. Grin

Of course, there are no shelves to stick the fablon to now, but I will think of something.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/08/2010 21:38

what have you done with your shelves?!

Sprakly fablon is excellent, pity you had to fight for it!

The shelves were tired and horrid. No amount of fablon would have improved them.
They are now in the shed recycled.

I have found a huge old bookshelf so that will look much better and things will be easier to find, like ramekins and the like.

I even bought window fablon as we have bare glass in the bathroom and I worry that people will look in, despite living miles away from nowhere.

Kitchen will be shabby chic without the chic. Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/08/2010 22:50

(lol at ramekins) Fantastic idea to use the bookshelf :)

the window fablon did look quite interesting....

The really important thing is, where are you going to put your prawn cocktail glasses?

The bookshelf is lovely idea, I bet it looks really good. Awww. I'm wanting a pantry now. With a marble slab for storing butter and such like. Awwww.

I think we should have a picture gallery of fabby fablon overhauls. Grin

SwansEatQuince · 13/08/2010 09:18

I was more concerned about the banana split dishes and the special ones for avacado. I have an avacado cutter and everything, I will have you know.

It is coming on very slowly as the bookshelf is being painted and the old cowshed roof finally collapsed yesterday which was inconvenient as I had not quite feathered the paint nicely so there is a tide mark line today.
Today will be spent between clearing tons of slate and feathering the paint properly.

The fablon is only 1 meter and the snazzy piece of formica that was to be covered is 1.20 so dilemma whether to get more and have a join or just leave it.

The window fablon is lovely but you need a degree in astrophysics to work out the exact measurement and sadly, I am a mere farmhand. I may have to slip the glass out as it is falling out anyway.
