Bathroom permanently stinks of wee

DS1 (4.5) has decided he can now wee standing up.

He can't. It goes everywhere.

The bathroom seems to stink no matter how many times I mop the floor. I seem to be just mopping the wee around.

Help.

Is the wee seeping between the base of the loo and whatever flooring you have? Into the floorboards?

Poledra · 01/08/2010 21:44

I agree re floorboards. Also, look at your loo seat. I had a wee-stinky loo, and discovered there was a small crack in the wooden loo seat, into which the wee was seeping and making the smell.

I only have girls, though

booyhoo · 01/08/2010 21:46

have you got tiles? my downstairs loo constantly whiffs no matter how much i mop it. it is the only bathroom with tiles, the other two have lino flooring. i think the wee soaks into the grouting.

MayorNaze · 01/08/2010 21:48

that febreze spray stuff. all the time. on the loo and the floor. get lino.

my downstairs lav never smells like a rose

southeastastra · 01/08/2010 21:48

get lino and one of those toilet mats. wash frequently, this stage lasts forever btw

fatlip · 01/08/2010 21:50

Yes it's tiles but I think has a kind of strip filling rather than grouting. I think it may be seeping under the loo.

Can I get Cif to seep under the loo after it!

could also be the seal thing on the loo base has gone a bit and some of the wee really is seeping out and causing the stink. am wondering about ours tbh and just googled it

Blizzie · 01/08/2010 22:34

my boys [ 8 & 10 ] and hubby sit down for a wee, I told them that either that or.......

GypsyMoth · 01/08/2010 22:39

i slop a load of zoflora around....

and mop?? who mops efficiently? i get down on my hands and knees and clean with a cloth, bleach, disinfectant etc...

fatlip · 01/08/2010 22:51

I've just checked and there is no seal round base of loo (rented house). Hands and knees for me I think.

menaceandmayhem · 01/08/2010 22:57

Well come and laugh at old clever thing here, who decided it would be a fab idea to get carpet in the bathrooms... so it would be nice and soft when getting out the bath or shower... My vax comes out and very regular intervals.

I have four boys and an OH.

I go through a toilet seat every 6 mths or so (when I say 'go through' I dont mean I fall through it )

All that boywee rusts the fixings and they fall apart.

DC's old nursery loos smelt of wee however much they cleaned them. They found out that over the years all that wee seeped into the walls. They had to strip the plaster right off and do it all again

Wee - the most powerful liquid known to man.

GypsyMoth · 01/08/2010 23:05

lol!!!

whomovedmychocolate · 01/08/2010 23:11

Vaseline on the fixings stops that mrsdevere!

I'm not looking forward to DS potty training for this reason. Mind you we have stone floors so it should be fairly easy to clean.

thefirstmrsDeVere · 01/08/2010 23:17

No WAY! You mean after 20 years of male induced toilet seat wreckage - there is an answer?!!?

You could have told me sooner who

whomovedmychocolate · 01/08/2010 23:19

I only found out a few months ago. Ridiculously simple isn't it!?

FlyMeToDunoon · 01/08/2010 23:32

Wash walls too as wee sprays all over the place.
Sooo with the vaseline do you need to re-apply after every clean?

booyhoo · 02/08/2010 11:02

stone floors?? are they sealed?

whomovedmychocolate · 02/08/2010 15:47

Of course

whomovedmychocolate · 02/08/2010 15:48

Flymetodunoon -- you need to put more on every few weeks. Because the metal bits are normally hidden it doesn't get taken off easily - best thing to do is cut a bit of sponge and put it in the pot of vaseline (or generic petroleum jelly obviously) and just smush it round the area.

NB it does, however collect pubes (yurk) if you don't clean it off now and then with soapy water and then put more on.

booyhoo · 02/08/2010 19:57

sorry whomoved, i remember my mum having a panic attack everytime something was spilled on our stone floors at home. they weren't sealed and everything soaked into them. that's why i asked.

that is a good tip about the vaseline, although i don't think i could stomach pube removal.

whomovedmychocolate · 02/08/2010 20:05

Ah - well these days sealing them takes about an hour, you paint the stuff on, it dries. Job done for the next ten years.

We have unsealed stone floors in the kitchen - well had - I sealed them. Now they are clean and stay clean. Depends on the stone as well, slate and terracotta obviously absorb differently.

LikeGarlicChicken · 02/08/2010 21:06

Whomoved......I'm just so impressed by you, I've just put you on speed dial (in my head, of course!)
