Bathroom permanently stinks of wee

fatlip · 01/08/2010 21:40

DS1 (4.5) has decided he can now wee standing up.

He can't. It goes everywhere.

The bathroom seems to stink no matter how many times I mop the floor. I seem to be just mopping the wee around.

Help.

Can't you teach him to do it properly? I wouldn't let my 4.5 go on his own consistently til I'd seen he could aim - you could easily put a pingpong ball in or something to help. I stood by him saying - hold it, point it ...

Can grown men really not aim into the toilet without splashing everywhere?

FlyMeToDunoon · 03/08/2010 08:50

Thank you for that detail on the vaseline and I feel that I may not be able to face removing puby old stuff either.
Does even a straight aim produce spray though cockles?
Right off to empty the cat litter tray

I've been battling this for ages now, so it's great to see some tips! Couldn't work out why the hinges were going weird

I think the worst culprit in our household is DP when he's tipsy...I actually oversee the whole event so I know where it's gone

My mother swears by vinegar for getting rid of the wee smell - worth a try?

whomovedmychocolate · 03/08/2010 09:18

It's not the spraying that's the issue I think, it's the last dribble when they think they are finished but their willy has other ideas .

And no, men generally are not aware of it, because they've always done it.

NB baby oil works as well, does not collect pubes but you do need to apply it once a week, the best stuff is actually the baby oil mousse because you spray it on and don't do any rubbing in.

Acetic acid will dissolve the enzymes in wee so will get rid of some of the smell - but not actually get rid of the staining. Also it depends how acidic the wee is which is dependent on diet etc.

If you have a wooden toilet seat this can harbour smells.

When DD was younger I'm not sure how she managed it but she got through several wooden toilet seats. The way she perched on the seat (rather than sitting with her bottom through the hole IYSWIM) meant that her wee was partly spraying onto and under the wooden seat. The seats all seemed to have a join in the wood at the front which was the weak point where the wee would get in.

We've now given up on wooden seats for a while.

You can seal wooden toilet seats against this damage. But yet again, who wants to remember once a year to remove the loo seat, oil the hinges, seal the seat and put it back down again, all before a little child runs up and pisses on your masterpiece?

colditz · 03/08/2010 11:12

Bucket of hot water

biological washing liquid

Scrub thoroughly.

Of course the answer ultimately is encourage them to go to Paul's house and use his toilet

I hate Paul's mum, smug cow with her non smelly toilet.

We found that the wee seeping under the toilet was the biggest contributor to the wee smell. So we removed the toilet, scrubbed with bleach and then put it back and sealed it. Its still a bit whiffy but not so bad.

beanlet · 03/08/2010 13:20

BTW just tried the vinegar trick on my very stinky nappy pail -- it totally works!

I loathe wooden loo seats -- germy!

mathanxiety · 06/08/2010 07:08

The best way to improve your boys' performance in the bathroom is to put your OHs in charge of cleaning the bathroom permanently.

gtamom · 06/08/2010 07:15

Vinegar neutralizes the urine odor. Then disinfect it. Then buy some silicone for bathrooms, and put a strip around the base so it won't seep underneath the toilet?

NorbertDentressangle · 06/08/2010 09:26

After posting on here the other day about how we've given up on wooden toilet seats as we got through so many of them, the hinge on our acrylic (?) seat snapped clean in half the following day Hmm

Luckily DP found somewhere that stocks hinge replacement kits.

MrsSnaplegs · 06/08/2010 09:41

The only reason I know this is I used to be a nurse and work in a very male dominated environment before anyone comments Blush

Men/boys have a small area at base of their penis on their perineum which they can press and it stops that last dribble supposedly. May be worth checking with DH/DP/ Older male in your life and see if they can advise your DS - if DH doesn't know about it ask Grandad Grin

Just stumbled across this thread, after just telling DS1 - aged 12!!- that he was now in charge of cleaning the upstairs bathroom as I was sooo fed up of still wiping up his wee at the age of 12!Hmm
Seems he's not alone.
All I can say is I'm glad I've got 4 girls and only 2 boys..and not the other way round...could have made for extremely stinky bathrooms!Wink

paddypoopants · 06/08/2010 13:58

If the stinky wee has really got hold you can get enzyme based cleaners - the rug doctor does one that basically eats away all those horrible stinky things like vomit, poo and wee. You have to spray it on and leave it to do its business. I found it worked on floorboards as well as carpets (my trouble was cat pee, not human and its soooo much stinkier)
