Moving to Hull

Relocater123 · 28/06/2024 22:07

Hi

My partner has just graduated as a dentist after retaining. I’m so proud of him. Sadly for his 2yr NHS grad placement we’ve ended up with Hull and no way to be any closer to home.

I WFH full time remote so isn’t an issue for my career but we aren’t from Hull or even close by. It’s about a 3hr drive. Does anyone know Hull? Are there any nice areas to look at renting in/ live in?

Being very honest I don’t want to move as we bought a house 2yrs ago which we have been renovating and it’s just finished so we will have to either sell it or rent it out which makes me sad as it’s only just finished.

any advice would be appreciated

TIA

If it's only for 2 years, is there no way you could stay at home? He could rent a room in Hull during the week and return home at weekends/holidays?

Lumpalicious · 28/06/2024 22:13

What’s your budget? I know the area but need some parameters first 😊

Pootles34 · 28/06/2024 22:14

Where is home now? Do you like city or country? How much of a commute would be ok?

Beverley is nice if a bit small.

Hoppinggreen · 28/06/2024 22:18

I am a Relocation Agent and I recently had to help someone move to Hull.
I am from about 1 or so away and thought it was a bit rough but it was much worse than I thought. There are some ok bits by The Marina but a lot of it is really grim (and I am not from a leafy suburb)
The good news is that there is some lovely coutryside West of Hull in the direction of York or if you want to go further East there is The Coast. The other good news is that property is quite cheap

Relocater123 · 28/06/2024 22:27

Thank so much everyone for replying. Currently we live in Lancashire, about 40 minutes from Manchester. I need to ideally be able to get back there occasionally for work. Previous to this I lived in London so ideally somewhere semi sociable to try and make some friends. I play netball and like the gym, we have 2 labradoodles so ideally a house with a garden. Budget to rent is probs up to £1200/ month but ideally less if we’re still to pay our mortgage still.

we have talked about him staying away but as part of his placement he could be on shifts 24hr or not set Monday to Friday so it might be nice if we could stay together otherwise it could really take a toll on our relationship. Also may be a bit challenging to pay for both mortgage and rent. (I realise that is very privilege to be able to try and do both)

I don't think it's all grim by a long stretch. There are areas that aren't great, but compared to other major cities it's really not bad- there's not a bad homeless problem, very little knife crime, there are lots of peaceful areas. Issues tend to be of the 'little dickhead' variety, rather than the possibility of getting shot.

anon2022anon · 28/06/2024 22:37

@Relocater123 do you drive? Whereabouts is your husband going to be based?
One of the biggest downsides to Hull is it doesn't have a buzzing nightlife, and the public transport is not great on a night time depending on where you live.
A quick facebook search has shown a few netball teams, it looks like there's a decent size team at the university.

everythingschanginhlg · 28/06/2024 22:39

West Hull/East Hull villages are the better areas. In Hull itself and I've lived there Victoria Dock is ok and Kingswood seems to be the trendy option. Personally I would never move back to Hull if I could avoid it.
It's not all bad though and there are some nice areas depending on what you like. The Avenues are very studenty and some of the houses are lovely.

Yes we both drive. He’s going to be based at the main hospital. I’m 33 and he’s 35 so we aren’t really out out anymore but occasionally like a night out. I know some people have mentioned Beverly is nice? Are there any places that should be avoided?

We lived there many moons ago and was told to look in west hull near the motorway. So Hessle, north ferriby, swanland etc. But that was buying not renting. It worked for us and when we were ready to move back home the house sold at a good profit

everythingschanginhlg · 28/06/2024 22:43

If he's based at HRI the transport links are really good. Brough is a nice little village and he could hop on a train into Hull which would take about ten mins. HRI is a 10 min walk from the station.

Relocater123 · 28/06/2024 22:45

Thank you will have a look at them :)

It’s always harder when you don’t know an area and how long it actually takes to travel around.

I’m trying to be positive and it will be an adventure. Just a lot to sort as we need to be there by the end of August 😬

Howden is nice, about 30 minute drive.

Thank you for your advice. I’m not sure we’re quite ready to go back to Student living now. Possibly a bit old for that now 😂

Thank you’ll I have a look there. Are there many rental properties in the area? The last time I rented was in london and that was wild how quickly houses go when trying to find one there.

Maybe financially this could work in your favour which might be a positive and something to focus on? Rent yours out, rent in Hull. When I lived in Hull (admittedly a while back) it was very cheap compared to most other places.

anon2022anon · 28/06/2024 22:59

Beverley is lovely (it's where I live now). It's also a good night out, but you're going to be home by half 12 😁
You can get a house for that budget, but would struggle to get a good garden/ parking- there just aren't too many properties come up.

Avoid the area directly around the hospital. Kingswood is a nice area, new build houses but they normally have a garden & parking. Same goes for Victoria dock. Willerby road area might be good if you prefer an older house, but I've not lived there personally- I believe it's quiet enough though.

Heading out of the town, Cottingham, Beverley, Brough are all on the train line to Hull. Driving wise, Anlaby, Hessle & Willerby are on the right side, South Cave is nice but a bit further away. Better for the motorway though. I don't think that Swanland and north ferriby will fit in the budget.

@NotStayingIn we need to see if our mortgage will allow for that. I’m also a bit gutted as it’s taken us a year to renovate the house and it’s not finished. We’ve only lived in the house about 8ish months since it’s been liveable so will be hard to hand over to people when we’ve just about experienced it. I know a first world problem to have.

we also put cream carpets in so can’t imagine they will last renting well 😂

what do you think would be a good budget to have?

HopeAndJoy16 · 28/06/2024 23:04

I live and work centrally in Hull. Avoid city centre, Beverley Road, Anlaby Road, Hessle road areas. There's some lovely period houses/flats on the Avenues, plus it's only a twenty min walk to the hospital. And some nice restaurants and coffee places.

A lot of medics I know through work live on Victoria Dock, they're all newish build houses

Hessle would be worth a look, that's only a short drive away.

I don't know whether you would get anything to rent in your budget in the west hull villages but worth a look

WitchSharkadder · 28/06/2024 23:05

I know Kingswood is popular and has been mentioned a few times on here but I'd avoid it. Teeny little box houses and the whole area feels claustrophobic.

The vast majority of the villages are really nice. How many bedrooms do you need, OP? You haven't mentioned kids and I'm making an assumption schools aren't a factor, so I'd say go west villages for the transport links back to Manchester way. Kirkella, Willerby, Hessle, Anlaby etc are all nice. If your DH doesn't mind travelling slightly further to work, then Brough, South Cave, North Cave, Ellerker etc are all nice too.

Not loads but it changes all the time.

This is a nice area, photos are a bit limited but well within your budget and in a nice part of the town.

@WitchSharkadder no children, is just the 2 of us and the dogs. Ideally 3 bed as I’d need an office for WFH full time and ideally a spare bedroom as his family are from the Midlands and usually come to stay when they visit now so I’d imagine will want to do the same.

He doesnt mind travelling but just wants me to be happy as I’m going to be in the house the majority of the time as I won’t be commuting so he wants me to be happy there and feel safe taking the dogs out on my own
