Me plus the 3 girls in tow...at the checkout.

Checkout assistant: "Girls not back at school yet?"
Me (deep sigh, can I be bothered to have this conversation now?): "No...they don't go to school."
CA (Confused look. Looks at children. Looks back at me):"Are they at nursery then?"
[They are 7 and 8yrs old]
Me:" No, I educate them at home."
CA: "Do they not go to school AT ALL?"
Me: "No. Lucky aren't they?"
CA: "You think you can do a better job than the teachers?"
Me (finished paying by now thank goodness): "Well......that's not quite the point... How about you Google it, you'll find alot of about it. There are lots of Us around!"

We push trolley away feeling pleased with ourselves having spread the news Grin.

Listen all don't make me angry...what is this nonsense about Asda and Waitrose? being middle class doesn't mean you know more stuff about home education...I know people from lots of different backgrounds, even on benefit who like Waldorf, Steiner, home education...etc...and do it and don't feel they need the support of upper class people...in fact it is more unheard of in upper class...they tend to push the children to do better and to get the grades. home education is more like simple living, simple parenting and an educated choice made on the basis that the parents feel that is twhat they want to do for their children...it is still quite unconventional, but I guarantee lots of families do it for completely different reasons...it is about diversity and human freedom, freedom of choice...PS i don't home educate, but my child goes to Steiner school, which i think is lovely.

I think the comment about it was in terms of the training that the checkout people may have in different stores - not about the people who shop there?

But I sort of agree with what you're saying - mostly the comments I've ever had have had nothing to do with with socio-economic groups. The only two really awful people I've spoken to about home ed were very definitely well off/middle class types.
