How can I fit a single bed into my son's bedroom?

can anyone help with how to arrange my son's bedroom please? I'd like to get him a proper bed. he is still in a toddler bed at 8 years old 😅 the toddler bed is along the 220cm wall and we can just about open the wardrobe doors. a standard single is 190cm long but I can't see anywhere for it to go without losing all of his floor space

How deep is that alcove ? Could the bed fit in there? Change the door to a sliding door or bifold door?

my dd1 room is tiny and L shaped over the stair well. And smaller than your ds room. So we could only get a shorty bed in there. It’s narrow at 76xm wide and fits next to the door perfectly

Is taking the wardrobe out an option? Then he could get a bed along that wall, the type with storage and maybe a desk underneath. Get a single free standing wardrobe instead to go in the corner opposite the door

Mustreadabook · 07/04/2026 16:27

why not under the window?

thank you! they are built in wardrobes but we had considered taking the doors off one of them and having his bed sticking out of it! I also should have mentioned that it's a dormer, so sloping windows so we can't have a high bed either unfortunately.

I'll measure up a shorty too, thank you!

How much work are you willing to do?

I would take out either one or both wardrobes. He will likely want a double bed in 5-ish years' time anyway.

SleepingisanArt · 07/04/2026 16:29

Standard bed in the window alcove - you've written it as 200 wide and a standard bed as 190 so should fit....

why not under the window?

I suppose it's the fear of boys and windows 😅 but also it would be alongside the radiator. it's a dormer too so gets quite cold in winter

I think this is probably our best option. thanks

I'd take out half the wardrobes and put in a high sleeper. An 8 year old boy is quickly going to be growing into a teenager before you know it and so a shorty bed won't last.

Mcdhotchoc · 07/04/2026 16:32

Put it under the window. Move the radiator.

Wrigglypiggly · 07/04/2026 16:32

I would put a radiator cover over the radiator, change the locks in the windows to ones that you feel safe your child won’t be able to climb out of then put the bed in that space!

viques · 07/04/2026 16:33

Turn the alcove into a single chest of drawers/ desk area , if he needs extra storage there could be cupboardsabove.Ah, no there couldn’t it’s a window!

Put the bed along the long wall.

put a single wardrobe on the wall opposite the door.

Turn the door into a sliding door.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 07/04/2026 16:34

Yeah maybe take out one of the wardrobes and fit along there. Then add shelving above the bed between wardrobe and wall. If he wants more storage.

Or change the doors to sliding doors on the wardrobe

kohlrabislaw · 07/04/2026 16:35

Could you replace the radiator with a tall skinny radiator to make more wall space? You can get a safety catch for the window.

DeQuin · 07/04/2026 16:36

Lazy solution: take the doors off the cupboards and replace with a rail and a curtain.

Why on earth would a teenage boy want a double bed? I mean, maybe it might be cool if you have the space, but given that they don’t this seems a strange thing to suggest as a consideration.
I am happy to be corrected, but I feel like the vast majority of teenagers sleep in single beds unless they are in a privileged (large) house.

FriedFalafels · 07/04/2026 16:38

I’d take out the wardrobe on the right hand side. That should then give enough room for the bed, you could always remove just the doors and add some higher shelving if that works?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/04/2026 16:39

Don’t put in a shorty, he’ll be out of it in two mins.

Take the doors and flood off a wardrobe - put one end of the bed in there. If it’s the head end, maybe add shelves, reading lights etc. if that’s too claustrophobic, make it the foot end. Or take the wardrobe down altogether. I’d go for a high ish bed with storage under.

I must admit I don’t understand the concept of teenagers always having to have a double bed (which I see on here a lot). After all, an adult in sleeping even in a king size bed with a partner only gets a single bed amount of space. And in a lot of houses it’s not realistic to put a double bed in, certainly not in this room that the op is talking about, given that she is struggling to fit a single!

rwalker · 07/04/2026 16:43

There’s too many wardrobes in the room get rid of built in and get free standing double wardrobe

Livelovelaughfuckoff · 07/04/2026 16:44

I think losing some wardrobe space is the best way. 3 metres worth of wardrobe is quite a lot for an 8 year old so I don't think you will miss the storage or you could replace with reduce depth Pax wardrobes and sliding doors.

RandomUsernameHere · 07/04/2026 16:45

If you get one without a headboard/frame that extends beyond the mattress it would fit by the window (a UK single mattress is 190cm long). So either a divan or a style that’s just a base with legs.

I would alter the wardrobe so that the bedhead fits in where the wardrobe is. Put an end piece in to truncate the wardrobe and the build shelves in above the bed for books

yeah I slept in a single bed until I moved out of my mum's house early 20s
