How can I fit a single bed into my son's bedroom?

can anyone help with how to arrange my son's bedroom please? I'd like to get him a proper bed. he is still in a toddler bed at 8 years old 😅 the toddler bed is along the 220cm wall and we can just about open the wardrobe doors. a standard single is 190cm long but I can't see anywhere for it to go without losing all of his floor space

Are you able to alter the door into the room to opening outwards? That would give you more room in the room

ODFOx · 07/04/2026 17:01

That, with a cabin bed with cupboard/drawers under for storage, then put a desk across the radiator area with good number of sockets for future homework/crafts etc.

aliloandabanana · 07/04/2026 17:31

Can you put the bed head against the 220 wall? There should still be room to open the wardrobe doors and the bedroom door, although it will all be tight.
If not, I think you need to redesign the room around the bed in a more sensible position.
I had a tiny bedroom as a child, smaller than this one, but it was well designed and had a lot of storage space.

inmyera · 07/04/2026 17:43

thanks all, we had thought about removing the doors of the second wardrobe to put the bed in there and add some shelving. my husband is threatening to do it and his DIY is questionable and it will probably take him 2 years but I think that is the most sensible option! I will get some quotes and try and encourage him to get a pro in instead 😅

Take out the fitted wardrobes.
Unless you need them for other storage, and have no other storage elsewhere, this is way too many wardrobes for a kids room.
My kids have alwyas had a combi cupboard - hanging above and drawers below, along with under bed storage. Boys don't need long hangin space, so a full wardrobe is veyr space hungry. If you had a free standing cupboard, whether wardrobe/drawers etc you could be much more flexible with the space.
Then there are 3 places the bed could go and at least 2 the wardrobe could go, depending on the slope of the ceiling.
Or have low units for clothes, ikea storgae with square boxes to hold T shirts/underwear etc, so no need for a tall wardrobe.

Toy storage either side of the window, with rug on floor between, or low toy stirage with lego model display on top.

If you rehung the door so it opens against the wardrobes, could the bed come out into the centre of the room? Parallel to the wardrobes so you can still open the doors.

It would leave enough at the foot to walk around and the window area could be used for desk or play.

If you do decide to fit the bed in the window, this one from IKEA is the right style for building in the space, if manoeuvring it in would be awkward with the door or ceiling.

Have you investigated how fitted they are? E.g completely purpose built or a carcass adapted to be flush? If the bed would fit in the space of one as you suggest then perhaps it could be adapted so you have an over bed locker style over it.if the doors are solid a joiner could probably adapt it.

I suppose it's the fear of boys and windows 😅 but also it would be alongside the radiator. it's a dormer too so gets quite cold in winter

Boys and windows? Children and windows maybe, but he should be fine by now and a bed beside a radiator is lovely and warm particularly in winter.

a generalisation. but my daughter and all of her friends could be trusted by a window, but not my son and his friends!

Get a carpenter to make wardrobe smaller and have bed along 220 wall where toddler bed is bit going further down into where part of wardrobe currently is.

LuckyNumberFive · 07/04/2026 21:19

Take out half the fitted wardrobe and get a mid sleeper. Not as tall as a high sleeper but still able to have a roll out desk under it, along with storage and chest of drawers.

Yes, or the opposite. My boys had a bed that pushed under a suspended ‘floor’ with a desk and wardrobe on top.

Hotdayinjuly · 07/04/2026 21:42

My son is same age and his room is smaller, his bed is along a radiator under the window he’s not tried to escape. Agree the longer term solution is the wardrobe removal but the simplest is a divan or simple bedframe under the window. Lock the window and turn the radiator down if you’re particularly worried.

cantgardenintherain · 07/04/2026 22:00

You can get window locks which only allow a window to open a certain amount.

BillieWiper · 07/04/2026 22:08

On the 200 wall under window/rad? Or get rid of the wardrobe that's stopping it fitting in the original space?

Shitmonger · 07/04/2026 22:41

I think @ChapmanFarm and I have the same idea.

Can you swap the door to open outward or at least on the other side, and put the bed like this? And then he could have a little desk or something in the alcove. Still a tight squeeze but maybe doable. If the wardrobe doors are still too wide maybe swap them for sliding ones.

Move the radiator (get a tall, skinny one) and put the bed under the window?

Comebypig · 11/04/2026 22:19

Just to add, you can buy things for the windows to stop them being able to open too wide if you’re worried about safety.

Burntt · 11/04/2026 22:34

Is that 220 to the wardrobe or more if you measure to the back of the wardrobe? Assuming it’s to the wardrobe I would take the wardrobe doors off/get sliding doors and put an ikea kuru bed along that wall. It’s not as high as other high sleepers so may fit? There are loads of Ikea hacks for that bed to add storage underneath. My son has one I’ve bought two of the same bed and hacked it so he has two large drawers under the bed, seating and toy storage on what is the equivalent of the bottom bunk (it’s low so I cannot sit in there but he’s happy to curl up in there age 10. Then his bed on top. It’s still shorter than most high sleepers even with the extra hight I added for the draws.

otherwise as others have said get decent window locks and a mid sleeper bed with drawers under it. Or rip the wardrobes out

momager22 · 11/04/2026 22:46

I had a bed next to a window and radiator when I was a kid and loved it. It was nice and cosy when the radiator was on. Just make sure the window isn’t draughty and get some thermal curtains.

I don’t get the whole being nervous about the window thing. Surely if he was going to climb out of a window then he’ll do that wherever his bed is

TurtleGroove · 11/04/2026 22:54

Honestly you’ve got bigger problems of your 8 year old can’t be trusted not to climb out of the window.

thank you! they are built in wardrobes but we had considered taking the doors off one of them and having his bed sticking out of it! I also should have mentioned that it's a dormer, so sloping windows so we can't have a high bed either unfortunately.

I'll measure up a shorty too, thank you!

Could you put a Murphy bed in the wardrobe? So it would stick out but could be folded away.

Does it have to be a bed? A fixed platform with a mattress on top might fit better.
