Non-wool or sisal carpet recommendations for stairs and landing

doctormumoftwo · 25/03/2026 10:39

Hi, we live in a Victorian house and need to replace the carpet on the stairs and landing. I like a pale colour as the house is quite dark but cannot cope with constant stains/looking dirty. Does anyone recommend a good brand of non-wool carpet or even sisal? Would like it to be easy to clean. Welcome all thoughts!

Following. I love sisal and want to use it in my Victorian semi when the carpets need replacing. Last owner put light carpet up the stairs and in all bedrooms. It's not going to look good for much longer now we are here....

Agree! The carpet is soft but so easily stained and look dirty about 3 hours after hoovering. I am looking at faux sisal- apparently meant to be softer, cheaper and more practical..

Re sisal- I can't decide if herringbone or classic (straight) weave would look better! If anyone has suggestions please let me know!

I’m very interested in responses to this question so this is simply a bump.

What concerns me is dirt getting through the gaps in a sisal or similar carpet and I’d be interested to know if this is in fact problem.

No advice but we need to do ours next year or the year after...

Please update @doctormumoftwo and let us know what you do and how it turns out

This company looks good and I have ordered some samples but if anyone has other company recommendations or tips, please post https://www.unnaturalflooring.com/products/new-england/

They look gorgeous!

Same, I think real sisal you get the gaps and it can feel quite rough (and stain) but with the faux sisal its a tight weave so no gaps. I am interested to hear about anyone with faux sisal and how it feels underfoot/how easy to clean.

I’m planning on getting this throughout my flat shortly. The one thing to highlight is that the fitting method (double sticking or something) means it’s more expensive to lay than a normal carpet. So it can be a pricier option overall than carpet. This would be the same for actual sisal. But for me, the look and the practicality of the faux sisal means it’s the perfect product for my taste and lifestyle (dog owner). I’m getting the herringbone.

I'm also really interested in this for stairs and landing (2 dogs),

Thanks for this. How did you find someone to lay it? The company suggests a professional with experience in this type of material, just interested in how you found someone. Thanks again.

@doctormumoftwo I’m using the fitters attached to the carpet shop where I’m buying the flooring from, so am assuming they know what they are doing! Hope so!

Real sisal is very chic but impossible to clean and smells awful for years!
I don't know about imitation sisal. I wonder how can that be easy to clean? A wall to wall rug would be more practical.

This. You can't wash sisal.

I'd go for a natural sort of colour carpet with a fleck, and have a no shoes and no food and drink upstairs policy.

theministerscat · 03/04/2026 22:28

I think it seems pretty practical in terms of cleaning: ”looks just like real sisal, yet has all the practicality of a synthetic alternative. This natural looking faux sisal carpet is water-resistant, bleach cleanable and has a heavy domestic wear rating, making it ideal to use both inside or outdoors.”

doctormumoftwo · 17/04/2026 10:22

So an update! I got loads of faux sisal carpet samples from literally every supplier I could find. The nicest (I think by far, although everyone has different taste!) is the New England by Unnatural Flooring. Got a few different quotes from the recommended installers on their website and all quite similar and more reasonable that I was expecting. HOWEVER, my DH and DD are moaning about the fact its not soft underfoot like carpet. Personally I don't care, wear slippers. I love the look, love the fact its so easy to clean. Tried to explain to both that when someone spills coffee/red wine all over it it will not be a drama. DH has asked me to explore more "carpet-like" options 🙄so does anyone have recommendations for softer types of carpet that are just as easy to clean and look good?

The Alberta range that Unnatural Flooring do could be an option but my heart is set on the faux sisal!

@doctormumoftwo Im stuck, I’ve had samples from unnatural flooring which I love but worried about the softness so have not made any decision for months!

Londonmummy66 · 17/04/2026 10:49

@doctormumoftwo - I'm contemplating the New England Range for my stairs as it seems ideal (and is the only place I don't have wooden floors). Can you give me an indication of the price?

OP posts:
lovealieinortwo · 17/04/2026 14:21

They look nice, I’m going to order some samples

theministerscat · 17/04/2026 17:23

@Londonmummy66 I’m getting the Newport from the New England range. Price is £38 a metre for the flooring BUT the product needs double sticking (like real sisal) so that ups the price quite a bit.

doctormumoftwo · 29/04/2026 12:11

I have decided on mine after ordering hundreds of samples and going into a specialist shop to look and feel them all!

The SOFTEST faux sisal, in my opinion, is Alternative Flooring Faux Sisal
Anywhere Ca-rPET.
I have gone for Herringbone Code: 8352.

Its so beautiful, looks like sisal, feels softer than any of the others. I am going for a whipped edge (cheaper and same shade as carpet), but you can do a more expensive cotton tape.

Hope this helps others!

@doctormumoftwo - can I ask how much that is?
