What window treatment to replace these roller blinds?

We’re deciding between Roman blinds and shutters. The windows face the street so we need privacy at times. Will white shutters with the widest spacing still make the room dark and gloomy?

What's wrong with them? I think they're OK as they are. If light is the issue, both shutters and roman blinds would make it darker.

I'd probably do sheer curtains as I agree with the other poster who said both Roman blinds and shutters will make it darker than it is now.

I think curtains will get greasy and I’d not advise, I think I’d go cream due to the colour of the tiles and units.

Shutters will look too busy and not allow enough light in. Roman blinds will still have a lot of fabric gathered at the top, where you most need the light in. I would go for window film to the level of the tiles, or a roller blind that works from bottom up.

LightningMode · 16/02/2026 14:25

We have similar front windows. Venetian blinds.

Cream for what sort of window treatment?

Roman blinds, shutters will look far too busy imho.

They look old and dirty and the fabric isn’t to my taste. To have privacy, we need them pulled fully down which makes the room dark.

Just get some nice Venetian blinds. Job done.

Privacy and daylight in the daytime, privacy when closed at nighttime.

You can order them made-to-measure online. Or you may have standard measurement windows.

In that case. I think frosted glass or film is yoir best option.

Anything you put in a kitchen is going to get dirty and shutters will be very dark.

ChrisMartinsKisskam · 16/02/2026 14:36

I have white shutters throughout my house and it’s not dark at all
i have blackout roller blinds on the upstairs bedroom windows along with shutters and even that isnt particularly dark

Rockstick · 16/02/2026 14:36

Fwiw, I put big plants in my street facing windows.

Ooh this is a very good idea.

Not your question, but I think the red colour on the pillar and beam is sucking light out of the room and making it darker and making the beam look heavier than it is. Dulux light and space paint would make the room much brighter, white voile at the Windows would be the brightest option

LibertyLily · 16/02/2026 15:09

Another vote for window film.

We have three window treatments at the two sash windows on the street-facing side of our kitchen -

Initially we hung faux relaxed roman blinds, then added window film on the lower sections for privacy. For night time we also have blackout roller blinds that can't be seen during the day as they disappear behind the romans.

There's a third larger (casement) window to the rear, overlooking the garden - we have no window treatment on that one 😉

I'm not a fan of shutters - unless original to the property - but I appreciate my view isn't a popular one.

Luxaflex do pull up blinds. Privacy and light !

yes good point, it was like this when we moved in and I sort of learned to live with it but it is quite darkening.

Shutters look smart and work well in rooms that are naturally light but agree that if you struggle for light anyway, they will exacerbate the situation (ask me how I know).

Maybe some sort of "cafe shutter" that only goes half way?

madrush · 17/02/2026 06:59

We have luxaflex duos in white - they do compromise the light a bit but so does window frosting and we felt at least with these we could raise fully if we ever felt the need.

treeowl · 17/02/2026 06:59

The room looks dark so I would go for window film.

DontKillSteve · 17/02/2026 07:04

You could have a sheer roller with Roman blind over the top. Or cafe curtains.

deeahgwitch · 17/02/2026 11:25

Do have a look at the Luxaflex pull up blinds @BlueRaspberry7before you make any decision

Snoken · 17/02/2026 11:56

I would just do plants as well. Maybe some basil and other cooking related herbs in one window and something else in the other.

jazzandh · 17/02/2026 12:05

I have very thin metal cream Luxaflex venetian blinds in my kitchen. They can be pulled right up or when they are open they are so fine you can see through almost unimpeded. They can be angled so that the light still comes in, and being cream they don't look dark on the inside, but it would be difficult for passers by to see in. Can be cleaned fairly easily.
