Help me with the perfect warm neutral - North facing room

I hate choosing neutral colours!!!

We have a room at the front of the house which will be used for a home office/grown up snug type living room (strict toy free zone and no TV in there).

It's just been replastered so is a complete blank canvas. North facing, one big window across the front of the room. Floor will be a warm but muted sort of oak colour in LVT most probably. I envision a big cosy velvety corner sofa in the back corner in either a olive green or earthy rust type colour or similar. Warm wood furniture too (desk, bookcase etc), we really like mango wood. Lighting is warm dimmable spotlights and we will have a couple of lamps and plants and a big rug.

Help me choose the perfect neutral beige! I want it to be earthy, absolutely no greyness to it, not too dark but equally not so light that it looks like a bland magnolia type of paint. Not too yellow either.

It has to be an affordable paint so Dulux price range really, not F&B or Lick or whatever. I fell in love with 'Duvet Day' by Coat paints but was aghast at the price and I've not heard good things generally about colour matching so would rather choose an actual colour.

Tried Egyptian Cotton as a sample with high hopes as so many people rave about it but it looked really grey in the room.

Please recommend me the perfect shade of beige!!!

I tried SO many testers!! Found the greige colours too grey for a dark-ish hallway and in the end went with Dulux Natural Calico - v happy with it - it’s a kind of champagne / cream.

NimbleMoose · 08/02/2026 20:25

You could try natural calico, summer linen or almond white from Dulux. All lovely!

WellOrganisedWoman · 08/02/2026 20:31

Natural Calico is lovely in my south/west facing rooms but I tried it in the other side of the house and it was insipid pale.

It is still Natural Calico so I’m watching with interest!

Knittedfairies2 · 08/02/2026 20:35

I've got Dulux Egyptian Cotton in a north-facing room and it's fine; no grey.

NoraButty · 08/02/2026 20:37

I’ve used Vanilla Bean by Crown paints in my north facing living room. It’s a warm beige, not cold.

I had it mixed in a Crown store but I think they sell it off the shelve too.

HHCrochetDiva · 08/02/2026 20:38

Ok this isn’t beige but I have a full north facing Victorian front room, not huge but nice high ceilings. Painted white ceiling and above the picture rail. I used this colour as I wanted something with a little warmth, not too cold. I love it, been up 3 years now and it’s still very happy with it. Nice and neutral but great background for everything else. We have a navy velvet-esque sofa and it looks lovely. Valspar, “lord of the jungle”.

Try Toasted Almond - Crown Paint

Meredusoleil · 08/02/2026 20:42

Dulux Almond White.

Campbellcarrotsoup · 08/02/2026 20:45

The best colour I had was a white with a hint of mushroom in our old north facing house it was very subtle but so much nicer - i think it was a b and q match colour .

Yes this is exactly what I want to avoid, an insipid blah looking cream, and this is what I fear Natural calico and Almond White type colours will look like. I'll get the testers but on my phone they look a bit too light or peachy whereas I want a more earthy look.

@HHCrochetDiva that colour is really gorgeous, I like the vibe a lot but after something a bit lighter and less pink toned.

I colour-matched Little Greene Rolling Fog Pale using Johnstone paint and really like it. It’s probably a touch of brown, lovely and warm and they have darker tones.

I was planning to colour-match Duvet Day recently, but the sample came out completely different. The guy explained colour quantities used in the sample are so small they can be inaccurate but a 5L tub would be a much better match. I wasn’t willing to risk £60 tub of paint.

Rolling Fog Pale looks lovely and definitely along the right lines. Yes, maybe I'm after a light earthy brown then, rather than a beige.

Still v pricey though. I may have to risk doing the colour match thing...

F&B Skimming Stone - can colour match. We used johnstones acrylic matte so that it was wipeable.

Meredusoleil · 08/02/2026 21:31

We have Dulux Caramel Latte in our living room, but I don't think that paint colour exists any more!

NancyJoan · 08/02/2026 21:32

I have F&B Bone, but colour matched in B & Q. It’s beigey - green in some lights, warm beige in others.

SirChenjins · 08/02/2026 21:35

We have Moonshot by B&Q that they mix for you - forget the name. It's a warm beige grey colour, just the right shade for our north facing room

sjh783 · 08/02/2026 21:45

We have F&B Jitney and elephant’s breath (colour matched) I know elephant’s breath was very popular 10+ years ago but when we came to do our living room it was by far the best match for the room (north facing) and I have not regrets. Jitney is a bit warmer, more into beige/ mushroom.

We have skimming stone elsewhere but it’s very light, I regret not doing elephant’s breath in that room.

cherrymauve · 08/02/2026 21:47

Dimity by Farrow and Ball. Beautiful depth of ‘colour’

Advocodo · 08/02/2026 21:49

I like Dulux Just Walnut. It’s a warm neutral. Just painted all my bedrooms in it. Our Egyptian Cotton downstairs, they are similar but I prefer JUST walnut.

ChikinLikin · 08/02/2026 21:59

I've got Dulux blush pink in my north facing bedroom and I love it. It's more of a neutral than the name suggests.
Just walnut looks good too.

I think Dulux Soft Stone looks the closest in colour to it. Like a light taupe/mink colour.

You did give Duvet Day as an example which is very similar to the likes of natural calico and almond white.
