Help me choose my colours

my carpet is great and staying like that (even though I don’t like it). I’m painting my walls cream and I wonder would midnight blue be nice for my banisters? And maybe a dark blue for the inside woodwork? I’ve generated an image from chat gpt- I’d really appreciate any ideas?

I think the blue looks nice. It's quite a art deco style so would maybe that 30s style pea green look nice? Also, what happened to the newel post?

Offcom · 26/01/2026 19:01

Yes to dark woodwork but I’d look at a blue-toned black like Farrow & Ball Railings - to me, the mock up looks a bit nautical

Yes, exactly. Railings or something would be less ‘coastal Airbnb’.

Penelopeeee · 26/01/2026 19:37

I would do the banister the same colour as the walls (but not cream with the grey carpet) to make it less prominent, it’s quite a crazy pattern and is the only thing you notice.

Penelopeeee · 26/01/2026 19:40

In fact, I’d want to take the carpet out completely, hopefully there are some nice dark wood stairs under there. Then have a colour like a pale sandy/pinky/pale terracotta on the walls and woodwork and some big green plants by those lovely glass doors.

Colourz · 27/01/2026 00:13

Oh God I never thought. It does look a bit nautical

Is cream with the gray carpet a disaster? I’m just unable to do this. I’m afraid the gray carpet is staying because I can’t afford to take it up. But yes one day I’ll take it up and it’s wood.

The newel post just ends like that. It’s very weird. I’ve no idea what I can do about that?

You could get a carpenter to cut a newel post and fit it to the wall so it looks "finished". I assume that wall wasn't there originally and some one removed the newel post or it is inside that wall.

Oh I just thought Chat GPT must’ve mangled the bannisters, have not seen one like that before. It’s definitely worth making a feature of then. It looks like an interesting place, with the doors off the landing.

What colour are the walls now? I don’t think cream is a disaster myself - something else might work better, but if you’re bored of eg white no point in suggesting that!

Colourz · 27/01/2026 11:37

I asked ai to make the banisters pea green. My daughter loves this. I like the midnight blue vibe

Yes those banisters are original and over 250 years old and they’re unusual and, I think, lovely

The green is awful in my view. The cream is good its the colour of the bannisters for me.

Do you think we should paint the banisters as well as the walls cream?

Lovely staircase @Colourz

I don't like the navy (for the reason stated above) and whilst I love green, that particular shade doesn't look good imo. I'm not sure if I'd paint everything cream like the walls, although usually I'm a fan of colour-drenching. I love saturated colours so I'd choose something with a bit more contrast to the cream. A black is probably the best option.

Our cottage is Georgian but sadly has a more recent staircase/bannister etc. We've opted to paint ours Little Greene Lamp Black (which is less of a blue-black than F&B Railings). We kept the bannister rail stained wood, but have ditched the carpet (ours was the previous owner's ancient one) and painted the stairs too, as they're of no historic value. Eventually we might add a colourful runner.

Our walls (not finished yet) are Edward Bulmer Jonquil, which is similar to F&B Setting Plaster and will have a hand painted botanical mural when I get round to it.

Curiously we chose a green (F&B Yeabridge Green) for the staircase window and hall doors, but I'm having second thoughts about that and might change those to Lamp Black too.

I think cream with grey carpet and navy blue bannister will look a bit odd.

If you have already done the walls cream, how about a more greyish shade on the bannister?

I feel like it needs to be somewhere between the 2 colours and I'm not sure navy will work..

Yeah black might work 🤔

Yeah, far more interesting than the spindles you see everywhere (including where I live)! Funnily enough I was thinking a glossy red, but that’s close to what you’re getting rid of.

Cream would be nice and calm, a real contrast to the previous look, and sometimes that’s exactly the change you need. But I do like your original idea!

ImSweetEnough · 27/01/2026 13:53

I would have to go with something much more neutral than that. I'll have a think and post an image! I think the walls and the woodwork need to be a lot 'calmer'.

ImSweetEnough · 27/01/2026 14:08

I would go black over Navy, personally. Love the bannisters!

I don't think the cream walls work with the grey carpet, no. I am no fan of the the grey craze but I would match the walls to the carpet with a nice, stony grey. I actually have 'Cornforth White' in my living room which is expensive (Farrow & Ball) but it's a lovely grey colour and I haven't needed to repaint it for over 10 years.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 27/01/2026 15:47

What about white or cream bannister's and dark blue walls?

Barrenfieldoffucks · 27/01/2026 15:50

I would probably go black, or something like Little Greene Pompeian Ash. Or, a darker, grey toned cream to tie the two together. French grey or Rolling Fog
