my carpet is great and staying like that (even though I don’t like it). I’m painting my walls cream and I wonder would midnight blue be nice for my banisters? And maybe a dark blue for the inside woodwork? I’ve generated an image from chat gpt- I’d really appreciate any ideas?

I would do the banister the same colour as the walls (but not cream with the grey carpet) to make it less prominent, it’s quite a crazy pattern and is the only thing you notice.

I agree. With interesting lighting eg warm hued LED strip light hidden behind the bannister to make it stand out subtly. You can buys these as plug ins by the metre so relatively inexpensive. Edited to add I think black would look too harsh and cheapen the nice pattern by making it stand out a bit too much

If the carpet is a given @Colourz and is a sort of mink grey ( a warm colour ) I'd go for F&B Dovetail or similar (I think Cornforth white is a shade lighter but in the same range ) on the walls and then I think it could take a soft black on the bannisters , or Bannisters in Tanner brown or one lighter. Or Cornforth white walls and Dovetail bannisters.

Good luck painting through all that fretwork ( or whatever it's called )

Anyway - All the best - I hope you end up with something you are delighted with. 💐

The green is awful in my view. The cream is good its the colour of the bannisters for me.

just a reminder that you dont need to do what's 'tasteful' or follow some sort of rules., you do what sparks joy, it's your house. -edited to add: I like the green!!

Oh wait, no the end of the newel post is not ai. It is an unknown weird stop of our banister

We’ve gone ahead and painted the walls cream. I slightly regret this but can’t seem to ever get any house decoration right. My plan now is to go for chocolate for the banisters. I’ve asked ai and this is what I got

That green is too bright. A really dark olive like The Tobacconist from Coat paints would look great (the navy with cream is too nautical).

floppybit · 27/01/2026 19:29

I love your banisters by the way- and the French doors!

Offcom · 27/01/2026 20:51

The chocolate works really well in my opinion!

I don't think the cream walls work with the grey carpet, no. I am no fan of the the grey craze but I would match the walls to the carpet with a nice, stony grey. I actually have 'Cornforth White' in my living room which is expensive (Farrow & Ball) but it's a lovely grey colour and I haven't needed to repaint it for over 10 years.

Agreed. You can’t really put a yellow toned white with a grey. It’ll clash. Whatever is in the walls needs to tone with the cool grey of the carpet. A cool neutral on the walls with a coral bannister to liven things up would be nice

ttcat37 · 27/01/2026 21:57

I don’t think cream and grey go- it’s warm and cool together and they tend to be jarring together.
If I were you, I would paint everything as you would like it to be once you have brought up the carpet. Ignore whether it goes with the carpet for now. It’s then ready and you won’t have redo it

If anything would 'cheaper the nice pattern' of the bannister, it would be LED strip lights, imo!

But as @ParkMaiden says, you should do what brings you joy @Colourz!

I quite like the chocolate idea, although I don't really think the combination of cream and chocolate works with the grey carpet. @ttcat37 is correct in suggesting you ignore the carpet for now and decorate for how you'd like the space to look eventually...easier said than done, though.

Colourz · 27/01/2026 22:30

Thank you so much everyone. I really appreciate this. I think I’ll do as @ttcat37 says. Ignore the carpet for now. I doodle the carpet btw , my first post was a typo, I should have said “ the carpet is grey “ not “great”. I’ve never liked it. But it’s new and I’m making myself live with it for now. I’ll post the finished result.

i don’t like not “ i doodle”

I think the main take away from this conversation is that everyone’s taste is completely different, so just do what brings you joy (as previous posters have said).

Colourz · 29/01/2026 10:13

Argh! Should I contrast at the top of the banisters? Or keep it all choclate

I’d go chocolate, but three hours later you probably made a decision already!

Edited to add I think it looks great!

Colourz · 29/01/2026 14:10

Thank you @Offcom ! I went chocolate. I just kind of froze cos the painter presumed we were doing the contrast and I hadn’t even thought of it
